    High frame-rate cardiac ultrasound imaging with deep learning

    Cardiac ultrasound imaging requires a high frame rate in order to capture rapid motion. This can be achieved by multi-line acquisition (MLA), where several narrow-focused received lines are obtained from each wide-focused transmitted line. This shortens the acquisition time at the expense of introducing block artifacts. In this paper, we propose a data-driven learning-based approach to improve the MLA image quality. We train an end-to-end convolutional neural network on pairs of real ultrasound cardiac data, acquired through MLA and the corresponding single-line acquisition (SLA). The network achieves a significant improvement in image quality for both 55- and 77-line MLA resulting in a decorrelation measure similar to that of SLA while having the frame rate of MLA.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of MICCAI, 201

    Causes, consequences, and cures of myopic loss aversion - An experimental investigation

    Myopic loss aversion (MLA) has been established as one prominent explanation for the equity premium puzzle. In this paper we address two issues related to the effects of MLA on risky investment decisions. First, we assess the relative impact of feedback frequency and investment flexibility (via the investment horizon) on risky investments. Second, given that we observe higher investments with a longer investment horizon, we examine conditions under which investors might endogenously opt for a longer investment horizon in order to avoid the negative effects of MLA on investments. We find in our experimental study that investment flexibility seems to be at least as relevant as feedback frequency for the effects of myopic loss aversion. When subjects are given the choice to opt for a long or short investment horizon, there is no clear preference for either. Yet, if subjects face a default horizon (either long or short), there is rather little switching from the one to the other horizon, showing that a default might work to attenuate the effects of MLA. However, if subjects switch, they are more often willing to switch from the long to the short horizon than vice versa, suggesting a preference for higher investment flexibility

    During 2015, its 117th anniversary year, MLA will celebrate a novel and permanent way of informing both residents and visitors to Philadelphia about the association. Several months ago, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission voted to approve the nomination of an official State Historical Marker to commemorate MLA\u27s founding in Philadelphia in 1898. The text of the marker will not be revealed until the marker\u27s dedication ceremony in keeping with the commission\u27s guidelines

    Experimental land observing data system feasibility study

    An end-to-end data system to support a Shuttle-based Multispectral Linear Array (MLA) mission in the mid-1980's was defined. The experimental Land Observing System (ELOS) is discussed. A ground system that exploits extensive assets from the LANDSAT-D Program to effectively meet the objectives of the ELOS Mission was defined. The goal of 10 meter pixel precision, the variety of data acquisition capabilities, and the use of Shuttle are key to the mission requirements, Ground mission management functions are met through the use of GSFC's Multi-Satellite Operations Control Center (MSOCC). The MLA Image Generation Facility (MIGF) combines major hardware elements from the Applications Development Data System (ADDS) facility and LANDSAT Assessment System (LAS) with a special purpose MLA interface unit. LANDSAT-D image processing techniques, adapted to MLA characteristics, form the basis for the use of existing software and the definition of new software required

    Optimal Aircraft Control Surface Layouts for Maneuver and Gust Load Alleviation

    The goal of this work is to conduct aeroservoelastic optimization of a high aspect ratio transport wingbox with distributed control surfaces along the trailing edge. The control surfaces are utilized for both quasi-steady maneuver load alleviation (MLA) and unsteady gust load alleviation (GLA). The optimizer dictates the sizing details of the wingbox, the steady and unsteady control surface rotations, and also the control surface layout. Layout design variables specifically dictate which control surfaces to retain, and which to remove. The objective function is to minimize the sum of the actuator weight and the structural weight, with several imposed constraints related to structural failure and actuator saturation. The optimizers preferences with regards to control surface layout for MLA are in strong contrast to GLA-driven designs. The GLA-driven design space also suffers from local minima not evident in the MLA space
