Forensic hypnosis
Hypnosis has long generated controversy as a recall enhancement method. Concerns about hypnosis are warranted by findings of a tradeoff between the number of memories recalled and memory accuracy. Moreover, witnesses often express confidence in hypnotically augmented remembrances, regardless of their accuracy, increasing the risk jurors will be biased based on convincing yet inaccurate information. Although misleading questions appear to be equally or more problematic, raising concerns about singling out hypnosis as a uniquely prejudicial technique, other recall improvement methods (e.g., cognitive interview and asking individuals to do their best to recall target events) appear to pose less memory risks than hypnotic procedures

Medieval Irish and computational linguistics
This paper will consider the application of some NLP (Natural
Language Processing) techniques to Medieval Irish texts to
provide an alternative perspective on linguistic analyses of such
texts. Using Táin Bó Fraích as a case study, I present the
outcome of some preliminary experiments. The pilot study starts
with the creation of an annotated lexicon as a basis of automated
text analysis. Linguistic features such as part of speech
information are recorded in a machine-readable representation to
assist with subsequent linguistic analysis of this well-studied
text. Using CELT’s electronic version of Meid’s 1974 edition, I
conduct both statistical and linguistic analyses of textual features
such as sentence structure, lexical frequency and grammatical
types. I use the results of this analysis to raise some tentative
suggestions regarding Táin Bó Fraích, and in particular the
frequently noted relationship between the two distinct sections.
On this basis I hope to make some suggestions about the
potential usefulness of applying some NLP techniques to

Precise Measurements of Atmospheric Muon Fluxes with the BESS Spectrometer
The vertical absolute fluxes of atmospheric muons and muon charge ratio have
been measured precisely at different geomagnetic locations by using the BESS
spectrometer. The observations had been performed at sea level (30 m above sea
level) in Tsukuba, Japan, and at 360 m above sea level in Lynn Lake, Canada.
The vertical cutoff rigidities in Tsukuba (36.2 N, 140.1 E) and in Lynn Lake
(56.5 N, 101.0 W) are 11.4 GV and 0.4 GV, respectively. We have obtained
vertical fluxes of positive and negative muons in a momentum range from 0.6 to
20 GeV/c with systematic errors less than 3 % in both measurements. By
comparing the data collected at two different geomagnetic latitudes, we have
seen an effect of cutoff rigidity. The dependence on the atmospheric pressure
and temperature, and the solar modulation effect have been also clearly
observed. We also clearly observed the decrease of charge ratio of muons at low
momentum side with at higher cutoff rigidity region.Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures. Submitted to Astroparticle Physic
