Der pädagogisch-totalitäre Anspruch in der DDR. Seine Entwicklung an Beispielen

"Der nachfolgende Versuch, Entwicklungen von Schule und Pädagogik in der DDR zu verfolgen […] erfolgt bruchstückhaft an Beispielen, kann damit [...] Tendenzen verdeutlichen […]. Fehlende und unzureichend genutzte wissenschaftliche Grundlagen erleichtern Verdrängung ebenso wie lineare Umwertungen und kurzschlüssige Rückrechnungen." Die Autorin geht zunächst auf den „Reorganisationskonflikt“ von 1952/53 ein. Anschließend erläutert sie die Zwecke und Ergebnisse des Übergangs zur zentralen Planung der pädagogischen Forschung Anfang der sechziger Jahre. Abschließend wird auf die schulpolitische Reaktion auf Schulkritik und Reformvorschläge im Umfeld des LX. Pädagogischen Kongresses vom Juni 1989 eingegangen. "Daß dem wachsenden pädagogisch-totalitären Anspruch auf der einen Seite auf der anderen Seite permanente Reformforderungen, aber auch die Überzeugung von der Reformfähigkeit des Bildungswesens in der DDR gegenüberstanden, läßt vermuten, daß die […] Verstrickung der maßlosen Zuversicht mit geheimer Verzweiflung weit wirksamer war, als über die Untersuchung von schulpolitischen Entwicklungen und ausschließlich vom Ende her und ohne Berücksichtigung des Jahres 1990 nachzuweisen ist." Lost in hyperspace: Linearity versus exploration in the design of multimedia for independent learners

We are developing multimedia tutorials for independent learners based on a generic software shell. In doing so, one of the pedagogic issues we are addressing relates to navigation. This is a key factor in the effectiveness of multimedia teaching, since it affects how easy students find it to extract and integrate information. Multimedia tutorials tend to be either highly structured, with materials presented in a relatively linear fashion, or an encyclopedia-style explorative resource. The former is restrictive and provides the student with little freedom to study the materials in the order they choose; the latter makes systematic study difficult and students can easily become ‘lost’. Disorientation in explorative-style packages is a particular problem for Field Dependent people (Witkin et al., 1971). We have incorporated the best features of both linear and explorative packages in our shell and our tutorials, with the aim of supporting Field Dependent people as much as possible, while not denying those students who prefer to work in an explorative way the freedom to do so

Conformality Lost

We consider zero-temperature transitions from conformal to non-conformal phases in quantum theories. We argue that there are three generic mechanisms for the loss of conformality in any number of dimensions: (i) fixed point goes to zero coupling, (ii) fixed point runs off to infinite coupling, or (iii) an IR fixed point annihilates with a UV fixed point and they both disappear into the complex plane. We give both relativistic and non-relativistic examples of the last case in various dimensions and show that the critical behavior of the mass gap behaves similarly to the correlation length in the finite temperature Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in two dimensions, xi ~ exp(c/|T-T_c|^{1/2}). We speculate that the chiral phase transition in QCD at large number of fermion flavors belongs to this universality class, and attempt to identify the UV fixed point that annihilates with the Banks-Zaks fixed point at the lower end of the conformal window.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures; v2: typos fixed, references adde
