    Performance of Some Ridge Parameters for Probit Regression: with Application on Swedish Job Search Data

    In ridge regression the estimation of the ridge parameter is an important issue. This paper generalizes some methods for estimating the ridge parameter for probit ridge regression (PRR) model based on the work of Kibria et al. (2011). The performance of these new estimators are judged by calculating the mean square error (MSE) using Monte Carlo simulations. In the design of the experiment we chose to vary the sample size and the number of regressors. Furthermore, we generate explanatory variables that are linear combinations of other regressors, which is a common situation in economics.     A novel observation of photon locking—the optical analog of spin locking—is reported, demonstrating the applicability of phase-coherent pulse sequences. The experiments are reported for the optical transition of iodine gas at 589.7 nm using the pulse sequence XYX-XYX̄. Locking decay rates are presented as a function of pressure and compared with optical dephasing (echo-decay) rates

    Locking hinge

    The space station configuration currently studied utilizes structures which require struts to be hinged in the middle in the stowed mode and locked into place in the deployed mode. Since there are hundreds of hinges involved, it is necessary that they have simple, positive locking features with a minimum of joint looseness or slack. This invention comprises two similar housings hinged together with a spring loaded locking member which assists in making as well as breaking the lock. This invention comprises a bracket hinge and bracket members with a spring biased and movable locking member. The locking or latch member has ear parts received in locking openings where wedging surfaces on the ear parts cooperate with complimentary surfaces on the bracket members for bringing the bracket members into a tight end-to-end alignment when the bracket members are in an extended position. When the locking member is moved to an unlocking position, pivoting of the hinge about a pivot pin automatically places the locking member to retain the locking member in an unlocked position. In pivoting the hinge from an extended position to a folded position, longitudinal spring members are placed under tension over annular rollers so that the spring tension in a folded position assists in return of the hinge from a folded to an extended position. Novelty lies in the creation of a locking hinge which allows compact storage and easy assembly of structural members having a minimal number of parts

    Injection Locking of a Trapped-Ion Phonon Laser

    We report on injection locking of optically excited mechanical oscillations of a single, trapped ion. The injection locking dynamics are studied by analyzing the oscillator spectrum with a spatially selective Fourier transform technique and the oscillator phase with stroboscopic imaging. In both cases we find excellent agreement with theory inside and outside the locking range. We attain injection locking with forces as low as 5(1)×10^(-24)  N so this system appears promising for the detection of ultraweak oscillating forces

    Variable length strut with longitudinal compliance and locking capability

    A variable length strut device is illustrated for connecting two associated structures which includes an outer load bearing shell, a drive assembly, a length varying compliance assembly positioned by drive assembly, and a strut rod locking assembly. The load bearing shell includes a connecting part adapted for connection to a first associated structure. A strut connection rod has a connecting part adapted for connection to a second associated structure and a distal end having a piston driver slidably carried in a housing of compliance assembly. Two compliance pistons act in opposing directions on the piston driver to provide longitudinal compliance in a compliance mode of operation. Locking assembly includes locking balls which are urged in a locking ring as locking bolt is urged to the left by fluid pressure. Microswitches sense the displacement of pistons away from the internal ring to bring the pistons to a neutral position wherein the pistons are in contact with the internal ring when it is desired to do so as affected by a control source

    Phase locking dynamics of dipolarly coupled vortices excited by spin-polarized current in two identical nanopillars is studied as a function of the interpillar distance L. Numerical study and analytical model have proved the remarkable efficiency of magneto-static interaction to achieve phase locking. Investigating the dynamics in the transient regime towards phase locking, we extract the evolution of the locking time \tau, the coupling strength {\mu} and the interaction energy W.     The performance of arm locking in LISA

    For the laser interferometer space antenna (LISA) to reach it's design sensitivity, the coupling of the free running laser frequency noise to the signal readout must be reduced by more than 14 orders of magnitude. One technique employed to reduce the laser frequency noise will be arm locking, where the laser frequency is locked to the LISA arm length. This paper details an implementation of arm locking, studies orbital effects, the impact of errors in the Doppler knowledge, and noise limits. The noise performance of arm locking is calculated with the inclusion of the dominant expected noise sources: ultra stable oscillator (clock) noise, spacecraft motion, and shot noise. Studying these issues reveals that although dual arm locking [A. Sutton & D. A Shaddock, Phys. Rev. D 78, 082001 (2008).] has advantages over single (or common) arm locking in terms of allowing high gain, it has disadvantages in both laser frequency pulling and noise performance. We address this by proposing a hybrid sensor, retaining the benefits of common and dual arm locking sensors. We present a detailed design of an arm locking controller and perform an analysis of the expected performance when used with and without laser pre-stabilization. We observe that the sensor phase changes beneficially near unity-gain frequencies of the arm-locking controller, allowing a factor of 10 more gain than previously believed, without degrading stability. We show that the LISA frequency noise goal can be realized with arm locking and Time-Delay Interferometry only, without any form of pre-stabilization.Comment: 28 pages, 36 figure
