The Seyfert Population in the Local Universe
The magnitude-limited catalog of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2), is
used to characterize the properties of galaxies hosting Active Galactic Nuclei.
Using emission-line ratios, we identify a total of 162 (3%) Seyfert galaxies
out of the parent sample with 5399 galaxies. The sample contains 121 Seyfert 2
galaxies and 41 Seyfert 1. The SSRS2 Seyfert galaxies are predominantly in
spirals of types Sb and earlier, or in galaxies with perturbed appearance as
the result of strong interactions or mergers. Seyfert galaxies in this sample
are twice as common in barred hosts than the non-Seyferts. By assigning
galaxies to groups using a percolation algorithm we find that the Seyfert
galaxies in the SSRS2 are more likely to be found in binary systems, when
compared to galaxies in the SSRS2 parent sample. However, there is no
statistically significant difference between the Seyfert and SSRS2 parent
sample when systems with more than 2 galaxies are considered. The analysis of
the present sample suggests that there is a stronger correlation between the
presence of the AGN phenomenon with internal properties of galaxies
(morphology, presence of bar, luminosity) than with environmental effects

The Population Genetic Signature of Polygenic Local Adaptation
Adaptation in response to selection on polygenic phenotypes may occur via
subtle allele frequencies shifts at many loci. Current population genomic
techniques are not well posed to identify such signals. In the past decade,
detailed knowledge about the specific loci underlying polygenic traits has
begun to emerge from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Here we combine
this knowledge from GWAS with robust population genetic modeling to identify
traits that may have been influenced by local adaptation. We exploit the fact
that GWAS provide an estimate of the additive effect size of many loci to
estimate the mean additive genetic value for a given phenotype across many
populations as simple weighted sums of allele frequencies. We first describe a
general model of neutral genetic value drift for an arbitrary number of
populations with an arbitrary relatedness structure. Based on this model we
develop methods for detecting unusually strong correlations between genetic
values and specific environmental variables, as well as a generalization of
comparisons to test for over-dispersion of genetic values among
populations. Finally we lay out a framework to identify the individual
populations or groups of populations that contribute to the signal of
overdispersion. These tests have considerably greater power than their single
locus equivalents due to the fact that they look for positive covariance
between like effect alleles, and also significantly outperform methods that do
not account for population structure. We apply our tests to the Human Genome
Diversity Panel (HGDP) dataset using GWAS data for height, skin pigmentation,
type 2 diabetes, body mass index, and two inflammatory bowel disease datasets.
This analysis uncovers a number of putative signals of local adaptation, and we

Stellar population analysis on local infrared-selected galaxies
To study the stellar population of local infrared galaxies, which contain
star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies, LINERs, and Seyfert 2s. We also want
to find whether infrared luminosity and spectral class have any effects on
their stellar populations. The sample galaxies are selected from the main
galaxy sample of SDSS-DR4 and then cross-correlated with the IRAS-PSCz catalog.
We fit our spectra (stellar absorption lines and continua) using the spectral
synthesis code STARLIGHT on the base of the templates of Simple Stellar
Population and the spectra of star clusters.Among the 4 spectral classes,
LINERs present the oldest stellar populations, and the other 3 sub-samples all
present substantial young and intermediate age populations and very few old
populations. The importance of young populations decreases from star-forming,
composite, Seyfert 2 to LINER. As to different infrared luminosity bins, ULIGs
& LIGs (log(11) present younger populations than
starbursts and normal galaxies. However, the dominant contributors to mass are
old populations in all sample galaxies. The fittings by using the spectra of
star clusters with different ages and metallicities as templates also give
consistent results. The dominated populations in star-forming and composite
galaxies are those with metallicity , while LINERs and Seyfert 2s
are more metal-rich. The normal galaxies are more metal-rich than the ULIGs &
LIGs and starbursts for the star-forming galaxies within different infrared
luminosity bins. Additionally, we also compare some synthesis results with

Distant X-ray Galaxies: Insights from the Local Population
A full understanding of the origin of the hard X-ray background requires a
complete and accurate census of the distant galaxies that produce it.
Unfortunately, distant X-ray galaxies tend to be very faint at all wavelengths,
which hinders efforts to perform this census. This chapter discusses the
insights that can be obtained through comparison of the distant population to
local X-ray galaxies, whose properties are well characterized. Such comparisons
will ultimately aid investigations into the cosmic evolution of supermassive

Morphometric and Phylogenic Analysis of Six Population Indonesian Local Goats
The research objectives were to characterize morphometric and genetic distance between populations of Indonesian local goats. The morphological discriminant and canonical analysis were carried out to estimate the phylogenic relationship and determine the discriminant variable between Benggala goats (n= 96), Marica (n= 60), Jawarandu (n= 94), (Kacang (n= 217), Muara (n= 30) and Samosir (n= 42). Discriminant analysis used to clasify body weight and body measurements. In the analysis of variance showed that body weight and body measurement (body length, height at withers, thorax width, thorax height, hert girth, skull width and height, tail length and width, ear length and width) of Muara goats was higher (P<0.05) compared to the other groups, and the lowest was in Marica goats. The smallest genetic distance was between Marica and Samosir (11.207) and the highest were between Muara and Benggala (255.110). The highest similarity between individual within population was found in Kacang (99.28%) and the lowest in Samosir (82.50%). The canonical analysis showed high correlation on canon circumference, body weight, skull width, skull height, and tail width variables so these six variables can be used as distinguishing variables among population. The result from Mahalonobis distance for phenogram tree and canonical analysis showed that six populations of Indonesian local goats were divided into six breed of goats: the first was Muara, the second was Jawarandu, the third was Kacang, the fourth was Benggala, the fifth was Samosir and the sixth was Marica goats. The diversity of body size and body weight of goats was observed quite large, so the chances of increasing productivity could be made through selection and mating programs
Predators reduce extinction risk in noisy metapopulations
Background
Spatial structure across fragmented landscapes can enhance regional population persistence by promoting local “rescue effects.” In small, vulnerable populations, where chance or random events between individuals may have disproportionately large effects on species interactions, such local processes are particularly important. However, existing theory often only describes the dynamics of metapopulations at regional scales, neglecting the role of multispecies population dynamics within habitat patches.
Findings
By coupling analysis across spatial scales we quantified the interaction between local scale population regulation, regional dispersal and noise processes in the dynamics of experimental host-parasitoid metapopulations. We find that increasing community complexity increases negative correlation between local population dynamics. A potential mechanism underpinning this finding was explored using a simple population dynamic model.
Conclusions
Our results suggest a paradox: parasitism, whilst clearly damaging to hosts at the individual level, reduces extinction risk at the population level
Population genetics models of local ancestry
Migrations have played an important role in shaping the genetic diversity of
human populations. Understanding genomic data thus requires careful modeling of
historical gene flow. Here we consider the effect of relatively recent
population structure and gene flow, and interpret genomes of individuals that
have ancestry from multiple source populations as mosaics of segments
originating from each population. We propose general and tractable models for
describing the evolution of these patterns of local ancestry and their impact
on genetic diversity. We focus on the length distribution of continuous
ancestry tracts, and the variance in total ancestry proportions among
individuals. The proposed models offer improved agreement with Wright-Fisher
simulation data when compared to state-of-the art models, and can be used to
infer various demographic parameters in gene flow models. Considering HapMap
African-American (ASW) data, we find that a model with two distinct phases of
`European' gene flow significantly improves the modeling of both tract lengths
