    Does local financial development matter?

    Get PDF
We study the effects of differences in local financial development within an integrated financial market. We construct a new indicator of financial development by estimating a regional effect on the probability that, ceteris paribus, a household is shut off from the credit market. By using this indicator, we find that financial development enhances the probability an individual starts his own business, favors entry of new firms, increases competition, and promotes growth. As predicted by theory, these effects are weaker for larger firms, which can more easily raise funds outside of the local area. These effects are present even when we instrument our indicator with the structure of the local banking markets in 1936, which, because of regulatory reasons, affected the supply of credit in the following 50 years. Overall, the results suggest local financial development is an important determinant of the economic success of an area even in an environment where there are no frictions to capital movements

This contribution aims to stimulate a critical reflection about local development, with particular attention to the role of regionalization practices in the construction of territorial identity processes. It is believed that the identification of specific areas is essential in public policies that aim to promote local specificities, especially in reference to strong areas of excellent territorial capital, not properly valued. This is the case of the Upper Aniene Valley, the study area of my PhD research project, for which there is no shared regionalization, neither from the scientific world, no from the political - administrative one, and in which the construction of a shared territorial identity is hindered by the absence of training and information models that allow the people to know the territory where they live or work. In this contribution, after highlighting (in the introduction) the importance of regionalization processes in the social and political construction of space, the case study will be presented, underlining the difficulties encountered in the research and the methodology that is intended apply in the regionalization of the Aniene Valley. It is believed, in fact, that this operation is preliminary to any attempt to intervene in the territory

Development of Local-economic-development Small and Medium Industries (Led-sme) in East Java

This paper presents the effects of Indonesian government’s developmental efforts of assistance and training performed on the growth of LED-SME business units and business performance. Both parameters of the government’s assistance and training were used to analyze the impact to the  growth and performance of business unit. To achieve a comprehensive result, samples acquired in this research were about 190 entrepreneurs and managers of LED-SME from East Java. Based on the parameters above, there are five hypotheses made to prove the relationship of the assistance and training to the growth and performance of business units. The structural equation modeling (SEM) was carried out to test the hypotheses. The results have shown that the government’s developmental efforts through both assistance and training for the LED-SME were capable on increasing growth and performance of business units. On the other hand, government’s developmental efforts through only trainings were incapable of directly affecting growth of LED-SME business units and performance. To improve the business unit and performance, the government needs to implement developmental principles of LED-SME with the basis of utilizing local natural resources and also the communities of LED-SME as main suppliers for their local markets. In addition, preservation and development of local cultural and traditional arts also need to be the government’s main concern.&nbsp

Local Wisdom for Ecotourism Development in Bogor

The development that occurred in the Bogor city is currently feared will have an impact on shifting authenticity of existing regional identity. Regional identity that still exists is one manifestation of local wisdom carried out by the community. This research was conducted to identify the type of local wisdom that is still done by the community to be assessed and analyzed by One Score One Criteria Scoring System method to be proposed as the regional identity of Bogor City. Languang Badong, Lodong Bogoran, Wayang Hihit, Rengkong Hatong and Tauge Goreng are local wisdom of art and culinary aspect in Bogor City. The ecotourism concept put forward to maintain the local wisdom in Bogor City

Development of Local Allometric Equation to Estimate Total Aboveground Biomass in Papua Tropical Forest

Recently, pantropical allometric equations have been commonly used across the globe to estimate the aboveground biomass of the forests, including in Indonesia. However, in relation to regional differences in diameter, height and wood density, the lack of data measured, particularly from eastern part of Indonesia, may raise the question on accuracy of pantropical allometric in such area. Hence, this paper examines the differences of local allometric equations of Papua Island with equations developed by Chave and his research groups. Measurements of biomass in this study were conducted directly based on weighing and destructive samplings. Results show that the most appropriate local equation to estimate total aboveground biomass in Papua tropical forest is Log(TAGB) = -0.267 + 2.23 Log(DBH) +0.649 Log(WD) (CF=1.013; VIF=1.6; R2= 95%; R2-adj= 95.1%; RMSE= 0.149; P<0.001). This equation is also a better option in comparison to those of previously published pantropical equations with only 6.47% average deviation and 5.37 points of relative bias. This finding implies that the locally developed equation should be a better option to produce more accurate site specific total aboveground biomass estimation

Shan Yuan Chinese Restaurant (SYCR) is a Chinese restaurant located at 228 Victoria Street, Hamilton. As the most sinological Chinese restaurants in Hamilton, SYCR has always tried to provide customers with the best service and food. Despite this, SYCR restaurant is now facing a crisis in the market because of the turbulent New Zealand food industry. The purpose of this report is to enable the investigator to gain experience in finding and solving problems through individual research. The investigator accomplished data collection through observation, interviews and questionnaire. The researcher found that the problems that SYCR was facing were mainly reflected in four aspects: cultural differences, market competition, online marketing strategic, political factors. The researcher provided four different suggestions in each of these aspects, which can be summarised as website operation, university cooperation, social media strategic, and political study
