    LIVE STREAMING USING PEER DIVISION MULTIPLEXING

    A Number of commercial peer-to-peer (P2P) systems for live streaming have been introduced in recent years. The behaviour of the popular systems has been extensively studied in several measurement papers. However, these studies have to rely on a “black-box” approach, where packet traces are collected from a single or a limited number of measurement points, to infer various properties of the traffic on the control and data planes. Although, such studies are useful to compared different systems from the end user’s perspective. It is difficult to intuitively understand the observed properties without fully reverseengineering the underlying systems. In this paper, we describe the network architecture of Zattoo, one of the largest production, live streaming providers, in Europe, at the time of writing, and present a large-scale measurement study of zattoo, using data collected by the provider. To highlight we found that even, when the zattoo system was heavily loaded with as high as 20000 concurrent users on a single overlay, the median channel join delay remained less than 2-5 s, and that, for a majority of users, the streamed signal lags over-the-air broadcast signal by more than 3 s

    Network awareness in P2P-TV applications

    Abstract. The increasing popularity of applications for video-streaming based on P2P paradigm (P2P-TV) is raising the interest of both broadcasters and network operators. The former see a promising technology to reduce the cost of streaming content over the Internet, while offering a world-wide service. The latter instead fear that the traffic offered by these applications can grow without control, affecting other services, and possibly causing network congestion and collapse. The “Network-Aware P2P-TV Application over Wise Networks” FP7 project aims at studying and developing a novel P2P-TV application offering the chance to broadcast high definition video to broadcasters and to carefully manage the traffic offered by peers to the network, therefore avoiding worries to Internet providers about network overload. In such context, we design a simulator to evaluate performance of different P2P-TV solutions, to compare them both considering end-users ’ and network providers ’ perspectives, such as quality of service perceived by subscribers and link utilization. In this paper, we provide some results that show how effective can be a network aware P2P-TV system.

    Clouseau Evaluation for Peer-to-Peer Transfer Operations

    We evaluate whether Clouseau, a commercial product from SafeMedia, Inc., is effective in discriminating between risky and non-risky P2P operations. We construct a testbed and assess the Clouseau's efficacy in interdicting risky content while passing non-risky content in both laboratory and office settings, using a wide variety of applications and protocols. We determine that Clouseau effectively blocks access to content via known P2P protocols communicating with networks identified by SafeMedia as containing risky content, but also prevents legitimate communications and does not block alternative protocols for accessing risky content.     Study on Large-scale Terrestrial Relaying of Satellite Broadcasted Real-time Multimedia Streams

    none2The chapter describes an architecture to relay on demand a real-time IP multicast audio-video stream broadcasted by a satellite on a terrestrial link. The stream is received by suitably equipped sites and then relayed to other sites that are not equipped with satellite receiving hardware but are nonetheless willing to receive the stream. By exploiting the properties of satellite transmission and adopting a hybrid satellite/terrestrial, multicast/unicast approach, the described architecture allows to overcome the restrictions suffered by multicast traffic in the global Internet, allowing it to scale easily across autonomous systems.     Streaming media over the Internet: Flow based analysis in live access networks

    Multimedia service delivery over the Internet is a success. The number of services available and the number of people accessing them is huge. In this paper, we investigate multimedia streaming services over the Internet. Our analysis is based on traffic measurement in live access fiber-to-the-home networks. We study parameters like traffic volume and flow characteristics for selected services. Especially the Swedish P2P video service Voddler and the Swedish P2P music service Spotify are studied. We show that indeed these services are widely used (20% of local hosts using Voddler, 65 % of local hosts using Spotify). We also show that they are different concerning the flow characteristics, with many short flows for Voddler and longer flows for Spotify. One thing that they have in common in our measurements is that the outbound, or uplink, traffic volume is larger than the inbound
