    Device for installing rocket engines

    Get PDF
A device for installing rocket engines is reported that is supported at a cant relative to vertical by an axially extensible, tiltable pedestal. A lifting platform supports the rocket engine at its thrust chamber exit, including a mount having a concentric base characterized by a concave bearing surface, a plurality of uniformly spaced legs extended radially from the base, and an annular receiver coaxially aligned with the base and affixed to the distal ends of said legs for receiving the thrust chamber exit. The lifting platform rests on a seat concentrically related to the pedestal and affixed to an extended end portion thereof having a convex bearing surface mated in sliding engagement with the concave bearing surface of the annular base for accommodating a rocking motion of the platform

Simple anthropometric and physical performance tests to predict maximal box-lifting ability

Box-lifting ability is an important characteristic of military personnel. The purpose of this paper was to determine the usefulness of the upright row free weight exercise, and simple anthropometric tests, to predict maximal box-lifting performance that simulates the loading of military supply vehicles. Two groups of adults performed maximal box lifts to 1.4 m (study one) and 1.7 m (study two) respectively. All subjects were also tested for upright row 1-repetition maximum (1RM) strength, body mass, height and body composition. In study one, a remarkably good prediction of maximal box-lift performance to 1.4 m (42 ? 12 kg) was obtained from a regression equation including the variables body mass, body composition and upright row 1RM. Approximately 95% of the variation in 1.4 m box-lifting performance could be accounted for. In contrast, in study two, only 80% of the variation in 1.7 m box-lifting performance (51 ? 15 kg) could be accounted for by the best predictor equation. Upright row 1RM strength appears to be a useful tool in the prediction of box-lifting ability to approximately chest height for most adults, probably due to a close match between the muscle groups and contraction modes required during both tasks. Military or other organizations could use the data reported here to substitute simple anthropometry and a 1RM test of strength and for the direct assessment of 1.4 m box-lifting performance

End effector with astronaut foot restraint

    Get PDF
The combination of a foot restraint platform designed primarily for use by an astronaut being rigidly and permanently attached to an end effector which is suitable for attachment to the manipulator arm of a remote manipulating system is described. The foot restraint platform is attached by a brace to the end effector at a location away from the grappling interface of the end effector. The platform comprises a support plate provided with a pair of stirrups for receiving the toe portion of an astronaut's boots when standing on the platform and a pair of heel retainers in the form of raised members which are fixed to the surface of the platform and located to provide abutment surfaces for abutting engagement with the heels of the astronaut's boots when his toes are in the stirrups. The heel retainers preclude a backward sliding movement of the feet on the platform and instead require a lifting of the heels in order to extract the feet. The brace for attaching the foot restraint platform to the end effector may include a pivot or swivel joint to permit various orientations of the platform with respect to the end effector

Development of Intelligent Prefabs Using IoT Technology to Improve the Performance of Prefabricated Construction Projects

Prefabrication (PC) projects have many advantages, such as cost and energy savings and waste reduction. However, some problems still exist that hamper the development of prefabrication projects. To improve PC project performance and advance innovation in construction, this study introduces an innovative method that incorporates Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Long Range (LoRa) technologies, sensor networks, the BIM model and cloud computing to automatically collect, analyze and display real-time information about PC components. It can locate PC components on a construction site and monitor their structural performance during the installation process. RFID technology and strain sensors were used to collect the required data on a construction site. All the data was transmitted to a server using LoRa technology. Then, the cloud-based Building Information Modelling (BIM) model of the project was developed to store and vividly present project information and real-time onsite data. Moreover, the cloud-based BIM model enables project team members to access the project information from anywhere by using mobile devices. The proposed system was tested on a real PC project to validate its effectiveness. The results indicate that the sensor network can provide reliable data via LoRa technology, and a PC component can be accurately located on site. Also, the monitoring data of structural performance for the PC component during the installation process is acceptable. The proposed method using innovative technologies can improve PC project performance and help industry professionals by providing sufficient required information

Accelerating Discrete Wavelet Transforms on GPUs

The two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform has a huge number of applications in image-processing techniques. Until now, several papers compared the performance of such transform on graphics processing units (GPUs). However, all of them only dealt with lifting and convolution computation schemes. In this paper, we show that corresponding horizontal and vertical lifting parts of the lifting scheme can be merged into non-separable lifting units, which halves the number of steps. We also discuss an optimization strategy leading to a reduction in the number of arithmetic operations. The schemes were assessed using the OpenCL and pixel shaders. The proposed non-separable lifting scheme outperforms the existing schemes in many cases, irrespective of its higher complexity.Comment: preprint submitted to ICIP 2017. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1704.0865
