Measuring concept similarities in multimedia ontologies: analysis and evaluations
The recent development of large-scale multimedia concept ontologies has provided a new momentum for research in the semantic analysis of multimedia repositories. Different methods for generic concept detection have been extensively studied, but the question of how to exploit the structure of a multimedia ontology and existing inter-concept relations has not received similar attention. In this paper, we present a clustering-based method for modeling semantic concepts on low-level feature spaces and study the evaluation of the quality of such models with entropy-based methods. We cover a variety of methods for assessing the similarity of different concepts in a multimedia ontology. We study three ontologies and apply the proposed techniques in experiments involving the visual and semantic similarities, manual annotation of video, and concept detection. The results show that modeling inter-concept relations can provide a promising resource for many different application areas in semantic multimedia processing

Hierarchical video summarisation in reference frame subspace
In this paper, a hierarchical video structure summarization approach using Laplacian Eigenmap is proposed, where a small set of reference frames is selected from the video sequence to form a reference subspace to measure the dissimilarity between two arbitrary frames. In the proposed summarization scheme, the shot-level key frames are first detected from the continuity of inter-frame dissimilarity, and the sub-shot level and scene level representative frames are then summarized by using k-mean clustering. The experiment is carried on both test videos and movies, and the results show that in comparison with a similar approach using latent semantic analysis, the proposed approach using Laplacian Eigenmap can achieve a better recall rate in keyframe detection, and gives an efficient hierarchical summarization at sub shot, shot and scene levels subsequently
K-Space at TRECVid 2008
In this paper we describe K-Space’s participation in TRECVid 2008 in the interactive search task. For 2008 the K-Space group performed one of the largest interactive video information retrieval experiments conducted in a laboratory setting. We had three institutions participating in a multi-site multi-system experiment. In total 36 users participated, 12 each from Dublin City University (DCU, Ireland), University of Glasgow (GU, Scotland) and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI, the Netherlands). Three user interfaces were developed, two from DCU which were also used in 2007 as well as an interface from GU. All interfaces leveraged the same search service. Using a latin squares arrangement, each user conducted 12 topics, leading in total to 6 runs per site, 18 in total. We officially submitted for evaluation 3 of these runs to NIST with an additional expert run using a 4th system. Our submitted runs performed around the median. In this paper we will present an overview of the search system utilized, the experimental setup and a preliminary analysis of our results

K-Space at TRECVid 2007
In this paper we describe K-Space participation in
TRECVid 2007. K-Space participated in two tasks, high-level feature extraction and interactive search. We present our approaches for each of these activities and provide a brief analysis of our results. Our high-level feature submission utilized multi-modal low-level features which included visual, audio and temporal elements. Specific concept detectors (such as Face detectors) developed by K-Space partners were also used. We experimented with different machine learning approaches including logistic regression and support vector machines (SVM). Finally we also experimented with both early and late fusion for feature combination. This year we also participated in interactive search, submitting 6 runs. We developed two interfaces which both utilized the same retrieval functionality. Our objective was to measure the effect of context, which was supported to different degrees in each interface, on user performance.
The first of the two systems was a ‘shot’ based interface,
where the results from a query were presented as a ranked
list of shots. The second interface was ‘broadcast’ based,
where results were presented as a ranked list of broadcasts.
Both systems made use of the outputs of our high-level feature submission as well as low-level visual features
An empirical study of inter-concept similarities in multimedia ontologies
Generic concept detection has been a widely studied topic in recent research on multimedia analysis and retrieval, but the issue of how to exploit the structure of a multimedia ontology as well as different inter-concept relations, has not received similar attention. In this paper, we present results from our empirical analysis of different types of similarity among semantic concepts in two multimedia ontologies, LSCOM-Lite and CDVP-206. The results show promise that the proposed methods may be helpful in providing insight into the existing inter-concept relations within an ontology and selecting the most facilitating set of concepts and hierarchical relations. Such an analysis as this can be utilized in various tasks such as building more reliable concept detectors and designing large-scale ontologies
Using association rule mining to enrich semantic concepts for video retrieval
In order to achieve true content-based information retrieval on video we should analyse and index video with
high-level semantic concepts in addition to using user-generated tags and structured metadata like title, date,
etc. However the range of such high-level semantic concepts, detected either manually or automatically,
usually limited compared to the richness of information content in video and the potential vocabulary of
available concepts for indexing. Even though there is work to improve the performance of individual concept
classifiers, we should strive to make the best use of whatever partial sets of semantic concept occurrences
are available to us. We describe in this paper our method for using association rule mining to automatically
enrich the representation of video content through a set of semantic concepts based on concept co-occurrence
patterns. We describe our experiments on the TRECVid 2005 video corpus annotated with the 449 concepts
of the LSCOM ontology. The evaluation of our results shows the usefulness of our approach
TV News Story Segmentation Based on Semantic Coherence and Content Similarity
In this paper, we introduce and evaluate two novel approaches, one using video stream and the other using close-caption text stream, for segmenting TV news into stories. The segmentation of the video stream into stories is achieved by detecting anchor person shots and the text stream is segmented into stories using a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) based approach. The benefit of the proposed LDA based approach is that along with the story segmentation it also provides the topic distribution associated with each segment. We evaluated our techniques on the TRECVid 2003 benchmark database and found that though the individual systems give comparable results, a combination of the outputs of the two systems gives a significant improvement over the performance of the individual systems
