Analysis domain model for shared virtual environments
The field of shared virtual environments, which also
encompasses online games and social 3D environments, has a
system landscape consisting of multiple solutions that share great functional overlap. However, there is little system interoperability between the different solutions. A shared virtual environment has an associated problem domain that is highly complex raising difficult challenges to the development process, starting with the architectural design of the underlying system. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution is a broad domain analysis of shared virtual environments, which enables developers to have a better understanding of the whole rather than the part(s). The second contribution is a reference domain model for discussing and describing solutions - the Analysis Domain Model
Addressing the Challenges in Federating Edge Resources
This book chapter considers how Edge deployments can be brought to bear in a
global context by federating them across multiple geographic regions to create
a global Edge-based fabric that decentralizes data center computation. This is
currently impractical, not only because of technical challenges, but is also
shrouded by social, legal and geopolitical issues. In this chapter, we discuss
two key challenges - networking and management in federating Edge deployments.
Additionally, we consider resource and modeling challenges that will need to be

An Efficient Requirement-Aware Attachment Policy for Future Millimeter Wave Vehicular Networks
The automotive industry is rapidly evolving towards connected and autonomous
vehicles, whose ever more stringent data traffic requirements might exceed the
capacity of traditional technologies for vehicular networks. In this scenario,
densely deploying millimeter wave (mmWave) base stations is a promising
approach to provide very high transmission speeds to the vehicles. However,
mmWave signals suffer from high path and penetration losses which might render
the communication unreliable and discontinuous. Coexistence between mmWave and
Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication systems has therefore been considered
to guarantee increased capacity and robustness through heterogeneous
networking. Following this rationale, we face the challenge of designing fair
and efficient attachment policies in heterogeneous vehicular networks.
Traditional methods based on received signal quality criteria lack
consideration of the vehicle's individual requirements and traffic demands, and
lead to suboptimal resource allocation across the network. In this paper we
propose a Quality-of-Service (QoS) aware attachment scheme which biases the
cell selection as a function of the vehicular service requirements, preventing
the overload of transmission links. Our simulations demonstrate that the
proposed strategy significantly improves the percentage of vehicles satisfying
application requirements and delivers efficient and fair association compared

ENORM: A Framework For Edge NOde Resource Management
Current computing techniques using the cloud as a centralised server will
become untenable as billions of devices get connected to the Internet. This
raises the need for fog computing, which leverages computing at the edge of the
network on nodes, such as routers, base stations and switches, along with the
cloud. However, to realise fog computing the challenge of managing edge nodes
will need to be addressed. This paper is motivated to address the resource
management challenge. We develop the first framework to manage edge nodes,
namely the Edge NOde Resource Management (ENORM) framework. Mechanisms for
provisioning and auto-scaling edge node resources are proposed. The feasibility
of the framework is demonstrated on a PokeMon Go-like online game use-case. The
benefits of using ENORM are observed by reduced application latency between 20%
- 80% and reduced data transfer and communication frequency between the edge
node and the cloud by up to 95\%. These results highlight the potential of fog

Time4: Time for SDN
With the rise of Software Defined Networks (SDN), there is growing interest
in dynamic and centralized traffic engineering, where decisions about
forwarding paths are taken dynamically from a network-wide perspective.
Frequent path reconfiguration can significantly improve the network
performance, but should be handled with care, so as to minimize disruptions
that may occur during network updates.
In this paper we introduce Time4, an approach that uses accurate time to
coordinate network updates. Time4 is a powerful tool in softwarized
environments, that can be used for various network update scenarios.
Specifically, we characterize a set of update scenarios called flow swaps, for
which Time4 is the optimal update approach, yielding less packet loss than
existing update approaches. We define the lossless flow allocation problem, and
formally show that in environments with frequent path allocation, scenarios
that require simultaneous changes at multiple network devices are inevitable.
We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a Time4-enabled
OpenFlow prototype. The prototype is publicly available as open source. Our
work includes an extension to the OpenFlow protocol that has been adopted by
the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), and is now included in OpenFlow 1.5. Our
experimental results show the significant advantages of Time4 compared to other
network update approaches, and demonstrate an SDN use case that is infeasible

Will SDN be part of 5G?
For many, this is no longer a valid question and the case is considered
settled with SDN/NFV (Software Defined Networking/Network Function
Virtualization) providing the inevitable innovation enablers solving many
outstanding management issues regarding 5G. However, given the monumental task
of softwarization of radio access network (RAN) while 5G is just around the
corner and some companies have started unveiling their 5G equipment already,
the concern is very realistic that we may only see some point solutions
involving SDN technology instead of a fully SDN-enabled RAN. This survey paper
identifies all important obstacles in the way and looks at the state of the art
of the relevant solutions. This survey is different from the previous surveys
on SDN-based RAN as it focuses on the salient problems and discusses solutions
proposed within and outside SDN literature. Our main focus is on fronthaul,
backward compatibility, supposedly disruptive nature of SDN deployment,
business cases and monetization of SDN related upgrades, latency of general
purpose processors (GPP), and additional security vulnerabilities,
softwarization brings along to the RAN. We have also provided a summary of the
architectural developments in SDN-based RAN landscape as not all work can be
covered under the focused issues. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on
the state of the art of SDN-based RAN and clearly points out the gaps in the
