Experimentation and Representation in Architecture: analyzing one’s own design activity

Architects materialize ideas on physical supports to register their thoughts and to discover new possibilities from hints and suggestions in their own drawings. Uncertainty is inherent to creative processes encouraging the production of different ideas through testing. This research brings to light that the re-examination of artefacts from new points of view allows for the review and generation of design ideas and decisions, capacitating students to make yet new discoveries from what they have done so far. Tacit knowledge aids specific decisions. Student reports become analytical records of their material registers (sketches, physical and virtual models) making it explicit that which is implicit in those artefacts. This apparently confirms previous studies that suggest that knowledge per se not always triggers or controls decisions in design. Many physical as well as perceptive actions actually lead the initial steps and play a crucial role in the whole course of production. Besides serving as external representations, sketches and models provide visual hints that will be checked later, favouring the upcoming of the unexpected, stimulating creativity. The intent here is to point out how these different means of representation and expression contribute in a peculiar manner to the whole process of discovery and solution to problems in architecture. The authors propose here a reflection on the process of design and its uncertainties in its initial phase, concentrating on sketches and real models as experimentations. They consider these means not from a graphic and physical register stand point, but in terms of conception and concepts they embody, as records of students thinking and knowledge. The contemporary museum added to its conception of communication medium and space, among others Web services, the website to spread their work and interact with their audience. This paper shows a study which analyzes the main institutional communication practices present on websites of IBRAM’s museums. The results demonstrate that these institutions, on their websites, generally, disseminate their contents through static media and communicate with their audience by means of institutional communication practices which vary in degree of diversity and in depth level

Fractionated look and expressionist face : the construction of the character in Samuel Rawet

The article aims to discuss the presence of painting and photography in the construction of the character Ida of the short story “A prece” by Samuel Rawet. We ask about the meaning of the use of various resources of painting, notably the allusions to Cubism and Expressionism, to narrate the story of the Jewish immigrant. It is questioned why she is seen and shown in a sectioned and deformed form. Based on the theories of translation and transposition between arts (Moser, Clüver, Louvel), we point to some meanings from one art to another, understanding the subject of immigration as the catalyst for many of them

During the design process, the architect translates his ideas into the real and concrete field. The different means of expression and representation has been used to mediate this interaction, decreasing the distance between these two fields. Today we are living in a moment of intense transformation of the projective strategies, afforded by the new digital media. Thus, this research aimed to compare different moments of the use of models in contemporary projective processes, through a research in the architecture offices in São Paulo that used the physical model as part of their design processes. This paper intends to understand the role of this representation tool and its potentiality nowadays. As a case study, we did a comparative analysis between the use of physical and digital models, electing two projects: the first was a model of the Ponte dos Remédios buildings, projected by the architect Marcos Acayaba and the second were the models used by the office Morettin Andrade Architects, projected for the Instituto Moreira Salles, in São Paulo. Another objective of this research was also an analysis of the physical models contribution in the Teaching of Architecture.Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da Universidade de São Paul

Arte, narrativa e verdade : a contemporaneidade ausente e o livro de história

    Get PDF
