Blistering barnacles! What language do multilinguals swear in?!
The present contribution focuses on the effects of language dominance / attrition, context of
acquisition, age of onset of learning, frequency of general use of a language and
sociodemographic variables on self-reported language choice for swearing. The analysis is
based on a database to which 1039 multilinguals contributed through a web based
questionnaire. Results suggest that, according to the self-reports, swearing happens most
frequently in the multilinguals’ dominant language. Mixed instruction, an early start in the
learning process, and frequent use of a language all contribute to the choice of that language
for swearing. Sociodemographic variables were not found to have any effect. Frequency of
language choice for swearing was found to be positively correlated with perceived emotional
force of swearwords in that language. Quantitative results based on answers to close-ended
questions corresponded to participants’ responses to open-ended questions
Language choice models for microplanning and readability
This paper describes the construction of language choice models for the microplanning of discourse relations in a Natural Language Generation system that attempts to generate appropriate texts for users with varying levels of literacy. The models consist of constraint satisfaction problem graphs that have been derived from the results of a corpus analysis. The corpus that the models are based on was written for good readers. We adapted the models for poor readers by allowing certain constraints to be tightened, based on psycholinguistic evidence. We describe how the design of microplanner is evolving. We discuss the compromises involved in generating more readable textual output and implications of our design for NLG architectures. Finally we describe plans for future work
Language Preference in a Bi-language Digital Library
This paper examines user choice of interface language in a bi-language digital library(English and Maori, the language of the indigenous people of New Zealand)/ the majority of collection documents are in Maori, and the interface is available in both Maori and English. Log analysis shows three categories of preference for interface language: primarily English, primarily Maori and bilingual(switching back and forth between the two)
PATTERNS OF LANGUAGE CHOICE IN SEMARANG SOCIETY; STUDY ABOUT LANGUAGE SHIFT AND MAINTENANCE
Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui pemilihan bahasa dalam empat domain
(ranah) yaitu domain keluarga, perdagangan, pendidikan dan pemerintahan. Peneliti
berusaha untuk mengetahui bagaimana penggunaan bahasa Jawa dan Indonesia dalam
masyarakat diglosik Semarang. Dari hasil penelitian diketahui adanya pembagian peran
dan fungsi penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Jawa. Peneliti menemukan bahwa
Bahasa Jawa terbatas dipakai dalam domain Keluarga secara dominan sedangkan bahasa
Indonesia dominan digunakan di dalam ranah perdagangan, pendidikan, dan
pemerintahan. Fenomena ini menunjukan persaingan bahasa antara bahasa Indonesia dan
bahasa Jawa dimana bahasa Jawa Ngoko sebagai ragam rendah, bahasa Jawa Krama
sebagai ragam tinggi dan bahasa Indonesia sebagai ragam tinggi. Kesimpulan lebih
menguatkan terjadinya pergeseran bahasa dibanding pemertahanan bahasa. Adanya
perembesan bahasa pada domain keluarga yaitu dipilihnya bahasa Indonesia sebagai
bahasa utama dan menurunya kuantitas dan kualitas kemampuan berbahasa jawa oleh
generasi muda lebih membuktikan pada proses pergeseran Bahasa Jaw
Patterns of language choice in the education domain: The Malaysian context
With Malaysia being a multilingual, multicultural and multiracial country, it is not surprising that everyone in Malaysia speaks at least two or more languages. Such a multilingual situation leads people to choose and use different languages for different purposes in different domains. Even within a single domain the choice of language varies on contexts, topics and participants. The purpose of this study was thus to investigate the patterns of language choice and use in the domain of education in Malaysia and also to investigate what influences this choice. The study
examined the patterns of language choice among UPM(University Putra Malaysia) undergraduates through a questionnaire survey and the data was analyzed. The findings reveal that language choice in education varies on sub-domains. It is also found that language proficiency, ethnicity, gender, and discipline of study constrain the choice and use of language
