Metastable states as a key to the dynamics of supercooled liquids
Computer simulations of a model glass-forming system are presented, which are
particularly sensitive to the correlation between the dynamics and the
topography of the potential energy landscape. This analysis clearly reveals
that in the supercooled regime the dynamics is strongly influenced by the
presence of deep valleys in the energy landscape, corresponding to long-lived
metastable amorphous states. We explicitly relate non-exponential relaxation
effects and dynamic heterogeneities to these metastable states and thus to the
specific topography of the energy landscape
A Dynamic Embedding Model of the Media Landscape
Information about world events is disseminated through a wide variety of news
channels, each with specific considerations in the choice of their reporting.
Although the multiplicity of these outlets should ensure a variety of
viewpoints, recent reports suggest that the rising concentration of media
ownership may void this assumption. This observation motivates the study of the
impact of ownership on the global media landscape and its influence on the
coverage the actual viewer receives. To this end, the selection of reported
events has been shown to be informative about the high-level structure of the
news ecosystem. However, existing methods only provide a static view into an
inherently dynamic system, providing underperforming statistical models and
hindering our understanding of the media landscape as a whole.
In this work, we present a dynamic embedding method that learns to capture
the decision process of individual news sources in their selection of reported
events while also enabling the systematic detection of large-scale
transformations in the media landscape over prolonged periods of time. In an
experiment covering over 580M real-world event mentions, we show our approach
to outperform static embedding methods in predictive terms. We demonstrate the
potential of the method for news monitoring applications and investigative
journalism by shedding light on important changes in programming induced by
mergers and acquisitions, policy changes, or network-wide content diffusion.
These findings offer evidence of strong content convergence trends inside large
broadcasting groups, influencing the news ecosystem in a time of increasing
media ownership concentration
Digital evolution in time-dependent fitness landscapes
We study the response of populations of digital organisms that adapt to a time-varying (periodic) fitness landscape of two oscillating peaks. We corroborate in general predictions from quasi-species theory in dynamic landscapes, such as adaptation to the average fitness landscape at small periods (high frequency) and quasistatic adaptation at large periods (low frequency). We also observe adaptive phase shifts (time tags between a change in the fitness landscape and art adaptive change in the population) that indicate a low-pass filter effect, in agreement with existing theory,. Finally, we witness long-term adaptation to fluctuating environments not anticipated in previous theoretical work
Be vicarious: the challenge for project management in the service economy
Purpose. The paper aims to answer to the following questions: which are the critical dynamic capabilities to survive in the rubber landscape of service economy? Does it exist in service economy a dynamic capabilities provider?
Methodology. The paper combines the literature review on dynamic capability perspective and that on vicariance to the Project Management professional services. Findings. Firstly, the paper identifies vicariance as an intriguing dynamic capability, crucial to survive in the rubber landscape of service economy. Secondly, the paper sheds light on Project Management (PM) as a vicarious that provides vicariance.
Practical implications. For each critical organizational dimension, the paper identifies the links among the service economy challenges and the vicariance typology required to the project manager to face those challenge.
Originality/value.The approach to conceive the PM as a vicarious that provides vicariance is original and leads to new insights on the professional services management. In fact, on one hand, dynamic capabilities cannot easily be bought through a market transaction; on the other hand, they must be built. This building can be achieved internally, by the organization itself (i.e. hierarchy), or through a partnership (i.e. hybrid form among hierarchy and market). PM professional services enrich organizations with additional information variety according to a hybrid (i.e. non- market) coordination model
Dynamic Homotopy and Landscape Dynamical Set Topology in Quantum Control
We examine the topology of the subset of controls taking a given initial
state to a given final state in quantum control, where "state" may mean a pure
state |\psi>, an ensemble density matrix \rho, or a unitary propagator U(0,T).
The analysis consists in showing that the endpoint map acting on control space
is a Hurewicz fibration for a large class of affine control systems with vector
controls. Exploiting the resulting fibration sequence and the long exact
sequence of basepoint-preserving homotopy classes of maps, we show that the
indicated subset of controls is homotopy equivalent to the loopspace of the
state manifold. This not only allows us to understand the connectedness of
"dynamical sets" realized as preimages of subsets of the state space through
this endpoint map, but also provides a wealth of additional topological
information about such subsets of control space.Comment: Minor clarifications, and added new appendix addressing scalar

A remote sensing based approach for optimizing sampling strategies in tree monitoring and agroforestry systems mapping
Characterizing agroforestry systems (AFS) at landscape scale is of a great importance for development planning at regional scale in Africa. Therefore, the major constraint to effective AFS mapping with remote sensing is the high diversity within landscapes. To have a robust and representative sample of training data, this study proposes an optimized sampling strategy guided by the AFS functioning and allowing to take into account the landscape diversity. A simple and reproducible approach based on unsupervised classification of remote sensing data and an a priori knowledge on the environment functioning is developed. The study is conducted on AFS of the Senegalese Peanut Basin. Assuming that AFS landscapes with similar trees and crop cover composition will have similar phenological development, a multiresolution segmentation was performed on Sentinel-2 NDVI time series to obtain homogeneous landscape units. Then for each unit, landscape diversity proxies were derived from various geospatial data sources, namely vegetation productivity and its temporal dynamic, actual evapotranspiration, woody cover rates and soil type. Using a hierarchical clustering, four classes of typical unit of the landscape heterogeneity gradient were obtained. On this basis an optimized sampling plan was produced and used to carry out an inventory campaign of tree biodiversity (figure). The results showed a well-defined landscape diversity gradient, confirmed by the field inventory of tree species
Labyrinthic granular landscapes
We have numerically studied a model of granular landscape eroded by wind. We
show the appearance of labyrinthic patterns when the wind orientation turns by
. The occurence of such structures are discussed. Morever, we
introduce the density of ``defects'' as the dynamic parameter governing
the landscape evolution. A power law behavior of is found as a function
of time. In the case of wind variations, the exponent (drastically) shifts from
2 to 1. The presence of two asymptotic values of implies the
irreversibility of the labyrinthic formation process.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure, RevTe
Landscapes and Fragilities
The concept of fragility provides a possibility to rank different supercooled
liquids on the basis of the temperature dependence of dynamic and/or
thermodynamic quantities. We recall here the definitions of kinetic and
thermodynamic fragility proposed in the last years and discuss their
interrelations. At the same time we analyze some recently introduced models for
the statistical properties of the potential energy landscape. Building on the
Adam-Gibbs relation, which connects structural relaxation times to
configurational entropy, we analyze the relation between statistical properties
of the landscape and fragility. We call attention to the fact that the
knowledge of number, energy depth and shape of the basins of the potential
energy landscape may not be sufficient for predicting fragility. Finally, we
discuss two different possibilities for generating strong behavior.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures; accepted version, minor correction
