The Roles of Management and Shareholders in Corporate Government

Examensarbetet är utfört vid Ringhals AB och riktar in sig på reaktorkylpumparna på reaktor tre vid Ringhals kärnkraftverk (R3). R3an är en tryckvattenreaktor och reaktorkylpumparna är vertikala enstegs centrifugalpumpar som tillverkats av Westinghouse. Bakgrunden till detta examensarbete är att Vattenfall AB vill öka kunskapen inom modellering av LOCA (Loss-of-coolant Accident) och har startat ett projekt för modelleringen av detta i den termohydrauliska koden TRACE. En viktig del i modelleringen av LOCA är hur reaktorkylpumparna beter sig när dom får hantera ett tvåfasflöde och då främst hur försvagad deras pumpförmåga blir. För att kunna göra en korrekt modell av pumparna i TRACE behövs pumpkurvor för samtliga pumpregimer för både enfasflöde och fullt försvagat tvåfasflöde samt en kurva för hur pumpen reagerar på olika ånghalter. För de pumpar som finns på R3 finns bara kurvor för fyra pumpregimer för enfasflöde, så i dagsläget är det svårt att göra korrekta analyser av pumpförmågan. Syftet med arbetet är att få fördjupad förståelse hur reaktorkylpumparna beter sig vid ett tvåfasflöde och hur detta på bästa sätt kan modelleras för R3s pumpar och målet är att analysera och ge modelleringsförslag på bästa sättet att modellera reaktorkylpumparna i samband med tvåfasflöde. Examensarbetet har delats upp i två delar. En litteraturstudie för att utreda vilka pumpdata som skall användas för att på bästa sätt efterlikna pumparna på R3 och vad som gör att pumparna försvagas. Den andra delen består utav modelleringar i TRACE för att se hur olika pumpkurvor och andra förutsättningar påverkar pumpförsvagningen och hur väl detta stämmer överens med tester som finns gjorda. Vid jämförelse av pumpkurvorna för enfasflöde och den specifika hastigheten var det KWU-pumpen som bäst stämde överens med pumparna på R3an. Med antagandet att pumpar med liknande enfaskarakteristik och specifik hastighet uppvisar liknande tvåfaskarakteristik så skulle data från KWU-pumpen vara det bästa för att modellera R3ans pumpar, följt av Westinghouse pumpar vars pumpdata finns inbyggt i TRACE. Vid lågt systemtryck, som det blir vid en LOCA, kommer pumpen antagligen att försvagas betydligt mer än vad som både KWU och Westinghouses pumpkurvor gör. Så för att inte överskatta pumpförmågan kan en lösning vara att antingen använda de inbyggda Semiscale kurvorna eller att man använder en kombination av Westinghouse eller KWUs pumpkurvor tillsammans med försvagningskurvan från Semiscale

Dynamical light control in longitudinally modulated segmented waveguide arrays

We address light propagation in segmented waveguide arrays where the refractive index is longitudinally modulated with an out-of-phase modulation in adjacent waveguides, so that the coupling strength varies along propagation direction. Thus in resonant segments coupling may be inhibited hence light remains localized, while in detuned segments coupling results in complex switching scenarios that may be controlled by stacking several resonant and nonresonant segments. By tuning the modulation frequency and lengths of waveguide segments one may control the distribution of light among the output guides, including loca-lizing all light in the selected output channel.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Europhysics Letter

Governing Juana: Madness and Manipulation of Power in Three Spanish American Plays on Juana la Loca

This article examines the representation of Juana of Castile in three twentieth-century Spanish American plays — Zavalía’s El corazón extraviado — (Argentina, 1957), Sabido’s Falsa crónica de Juana la Loca (Mexico, 1985), and Rueda’s Retablo de la pasión y muerte de Juana la Loca (Dominican Republic, 1996) — that portray the queen sympathetically as the victim of elaborate plots to usurp her authority. While the plays expose her madness as a pretext used by her father King Fernando and her son Emperor Carlos V to confine her for nearly half a century in the palace of Tordesillas, they do not deny the basic premises of the official history of “Juana la loca.” Thus, the captive queen is represented on stage as not only unable to govern Spain, but also as unable to control herself, leading others to “govern Juana.” (KL and AMS, Article in English

An Overview of Westinghouse Realistic Large Break LOCA Evaluation Model

Since the 1988 amendment of the 10 CFR 50.46 rule in 1988, Westinghouse has been developing and applying realistic or best-estimate methods to perform LOCA safety analyses. A realistic analysis requires the execution of various realistic LOCA transient simulations where the effect of both model and input uncertainties are ranged and propagated throughout the transients. The outcome is typically a range of results with associated probabilities. The thermal/hydraulic code is the engine of the methodology but a procedure is developed to assess the code and determine its biases and uncertainties. In addition, inputs to the simulation are also affected by uncertainty and these uncertainties are incorporated into the process. Several approaches have been proposed and applied in the industry in the framework of best-estimate methods. Most of the implementations, including Westinghouse, follow the Code Scaling, Applicability and Uncertainty (CSAU) methodology. Westinghouse methodology is based on the use of the WCOBRA/TRAC thermal-hydraulic code. The paper starts with an overview of the regulations and its interpretation in the context of realistic analysis. The CSAU roadmap is reviewed in the context of its implementation in the Westinghouse evaluation model. An overview of the code (WCOBRA/TRAC) and methodology is provided. Finally, the recent evolution to nonparametric statistics in the current edition of the W methodology is discussed. Sample results of a typical large break LOCA analysis for a PWR are provided

Evaluation of LOCA Frequency using Alternative Methods

The report presents two different models for derivation of plant specific frequency, in case of Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA), using specific data from Goesgen NPP, as well as data from the OPDE-database. The first model is using the EPRI methodology of pipe section, and the second model is using the Markov modelling for piping reliability assessment. For both methods, the pipe boundaries are considered to be ASME Class 1 pipes, with diameters between 10 and 750 mm. The information gathered provides valuable insights with respect to Goesgen pipe reliability and can be used for different applications, as for example the evaluation of LOCA or the frequency of internal floods.
