Litterfall production and nutrient deposition through leaf fallen in three tamaulipan thornscrub communities, north-eastern Mexico
Litterfall and the contents of macro- and micro-nutrients derived from its decomposition contribute greatly to the growth and productivity of forest ecosystem. The present
study was undertaken to know the variability during two years in the deposition of litterfall and deposition of nutrients through leaf fallen litterfall in three sites of the state of Nuevo Leon (Los Ramones, China and Linares), north-eastern Mexico, which encompasses the Tamaulipan thornscrub plant community. The quantities of litterfall production and its constituents varied between 2009 and 2010, being the year 2010 where higher litterfall and nutrients occured. Mean litterfall production during the two years showed the following trend: Los Ramones (364.8), China (522.7) and Linares
(583.1 g m-2 year-1). For leaf constituent, mean deposition ranged from 200.9 (Los Ramones) to 409.8 g m-2 year-1 (Linares), twigs from 62.4 (Los Ramones) to 89.3
(Linares), reproductive structures from 62.5 (Linares) to 80.3 (Los Ramones) and the miscellaneous component, constituted by unidentified plant material, body and insect feces, ranged from 21.1 (Linares) to 32.7 g m-2 year-1 (China). During the two years, mean annual deposition of Ca+K+Mg+P+N for Los Ramones, China and Linares was 10.1, 21.5 and 24.8 g m-2 year-1, respectively. Regardless of the research site, the
order of macro and micro-nutrients deposition was as follows: Ca>N>K>Mg>P and Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu, respectively. There were spatial and temporal variations in litterfall
deposition in terms of quantity, quality and potential nutrient returns. It is documented
that the variability of litterfall and contents of nutrients derived from litterfall is
influenced by the physioco-chemical characteristics of soils, diversity in vegetation
and climatic conditions prevailing in different sites and year
The low regularity global solutions for the critical generalized KdV equation
We prove that the Cauchy problem of the mass-critical generalized KdV
equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces for . Of
course, we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state
in the focusing case. The main approach is the "I-method" together with the
multilinear correction analysis. Moreover, we use some "partially refined"
argument to lower the upper control of the multiplier in the resonant
interactions. The result improves the previous works of Fonseca, Linares, Ponce
(2003) and Farah (2009).Comment: 27pages, the mistake in the previous version is corrected; using
I-method with the resonant decomposition gives an improvement over our
previous result
Añil, cacao y reses. Los negocios del indiano Esteban González de Linares en tiempos de mudanza, 1784-1796
The aim of this work is to exploit the information contained in an isolated but very dense source: the cash book of the Spanish merchant Esteban Gonzalez de Linares. Moved to Caracas between 1785 and 1791 to manage the liquidation of the estate of Sebastian de Mier y Terán, a wealthy landowner in Los Llanos, Linares was actively involved in the export boom of those years, marked by the end of the monopoly of the Guipuzcoa Company and the decrees of free trade. The text quantifies the amount of cocoa, indigo, and cattle moved by this subject, and their prices
Transnational encounters : crossing borders in Galician translation and interpreting studies
Exploring the ways in which languages and cultures interact across
borders becomes particularly relevant in our increasingly interconnected
world, as it ultimately enables an in depth understanding of how societies influence each other. Translation and interpreting, as mediating forces in transnational encounters, offer critical insights into this continuous crosscultural dialogue and negotiation. Of special interest for the Galician context, research into translation and interpreting —especially after the so-called cultural turn in the discipline— has often exposed asymmetrical power relations between languages and cultures and put forward alternatives to challenge them. Indeed, this has been one of the recurrent tropes in Galician Translation and Interpreting Studies scholarship since the 1990s
Cyclical history in the Gambia/Casamance borderlands:Refuge, settlement and Islam from c.1880 to the present
This article begins with a quotation from a local informant highlighting a perception in the Gambia/Casamance borderlands that there is a pattern linking the violence of the later nineteenth century with more recent troubles. It argues that there is some merit in this thesis, which is encapsulated in a concatenation of events: systematic raiding by Fodé Sylla led to the creation of a relatively depopulated colonial border zone which was later filled by Jola immigrants from Buluf to the southeast. In the perception of some, it is these immigrants who attracted the MFDC rebels. Mandinkas and Jolas of Fogny Jabankunda and Narang, and Karoninkas from the islands of Karone have therefore been largely unreceptive to appeals to Casamance nationalism. The article also argues that there are more twisted historical connections. Whereas in the later nineteenth century, the Jolas associated Islam with violent enslavement, they later converted en masse. Their attitude towards Fodé Sylla remained negative, whilst the Mauritanian marabout, Cheikh Mahfoudz, was credited with the introduction of a pacific form of Islam that valorized hard work and legitimated physical migration. This legacy has posed a further barrier to militant nationalism. Islam and violence remain linked, but the signs have been reversed
