SpaceNet MVOI: a Multi-View Overhead Imagery Dataset
Detection and segmentation of objects in overheard imagery is a challenging
task. The variable density, random orientation, small size, and
instance-to-instance heterogeneity of objects in overhead imagery calls for
approaches distinct from existing models designed for natural scene datasets.
Though new overhead imagery datasets are being developed, they almost
universally comprise a single view taken from directly overhead ("at nadir"),
failing to address a critical variable: look angle. By contrast, views vary in
real-world overhead imagery, particularly in dynamic scenarios such as natural
disasters where first looks are often over 40 degrees off-nadir. This
represents an important challenge to computer vision methods, as changing view
angle adds distortions, alters resolution, and changes lighting. At present,
the impact of these perturbations for algorithmic detection and segmentation of
objects is untested. To address this problem, we present an open source
Multi-View Overhead Imagery dataset, termed SpaceNet MVOI, with 27 unique looks
from a broad range of viewing angles (-32.5 degrees to 54.0 degrees). Each of
these images cover the same 665 square km geographic extent and are annotated
with 126,747 building footprint labels, enabling direct assessment of the
impact of viewpoint perturbation on model performance. We benchmark multiple
leading segmentation and object detection models on: (1) building detection,
(2) generalization to unseen viewing angles and resolutions, and (3)
sensitivity of building footprint extraction to changes in resolution. We find
that state of the art segmentation and object detection models struggle to
identify buildings in off-nadir imagery and generalize poorly to unseen views,
presenting an important benchmark to explore the broadly relevant challenge of

Semantically Guided Depth Upsampling
We present a novel method for accurate and efficient up- sampling of sparse
depth data, guided by high-resolution imagery. Our approach goes beyond the use
of intensity cues only and additionally exploits object boundary cues through
structured edge detection and semantic scene labeling for guidance. Both cues
are combined within a geodesic distance measure that allows for
boundary-preserving depth in- terpolation while utilizing local context. We
model the observed scene structure by locally planar elements and formulate the
upsampling task as a global energy minimization problem. Our method determines
glob- ally consistent solutions and preserves fine details and sharp depth
bound- aries. In our experiments on several public datasets at different levels
of application, we demonstrate superior performance of our approach over the

Vision, Action, and Make-Perceive
In this paper, I critically assess the enactive account of visual perception recently defended by Alva Noë (2004). I argue inter alia that the enactive account falsely identifies an object’s apparent shape with its 2D perspectival shape; that it mistakenly assimilates visual shape perception and volumetric object recognition; and that it seriously misrepresents the constitutive role of bodily action in visual awareness. I argue further that noticing an object’s perspectival shape involves a hybrid experience combining both perceptual and imaginative elements – an act of what I call ‘make-perceive.
Guided Proofreading of Automatic Segmentations for Connectomics
Automatic cell image segmentation methods in connectomics produce merge and
split errors, which require correction through proofreading. Previous research
has identified the visual search for these errors as the bottleneck in
interactive proofreading. To aid error correction, we develop two classifiers
that automatically recommend candidate merges and splits to the user. These
classifiers use a convolutional neural network (CNN) that has been trained with
errors in automatic segmentations against expert-labeled ground truth. Our
classifiers detect potentially-erroneous regions by considering a large context
region around a segmentation boundary. Corrections can then be performed by a
user with yes/no decisions, which reduces variation of information 7.5x faster
than previous proofreading methods. We also present a fully-automatic mode that
uses a probability threshold to make merge/split decisions. Extensive
experiments using the automatic approach and comparing performance of novice
and expert users demonstrate that our method performs favorably against
state-of-the-art proofreading methods on different connectomics datasets.Comment: Supplemental material available at
