James Turrell y Robert Irwin. Coincidencias, Manhattan, 2013

Durante el verano de 2013 Manhattan albergó las muestras de dos artistas que trabajan con la luz y el espacio: una amplia exposición retrospectiva de James Turrell en el Museo Guggenheim y una instalación de Robert Irwin para el Museo Withney de Arte Americano. Ambos han hecho de la percepción el elemento fundamental de sus obras en una investigación que comenzó en los años sesenta y que han continuado desarrollando a lo largo de los últimos cuarenta y cinco años. Los dos compartieron en sus comienzos una línea de investigación conjunta, sis investigaciones sobre las sensaciones en el espacio y su estudio empírico fueron cruciales para el desarrollo de sus obras que hacen de la experiencia espacial un mecanismo de trascendencia. Sus trabajos son de gran interés para la arquitectura poarque los dos hacen de la percepción en el espacio el argumento fundamental de su investigación artística

El espectador desorientado: luz, espacio y percepción en las instalaciones de James Turrell

Las instalaciones de James Turrell son producto de una técnica precisa basada en sus conocimientos de ingeniería aeronáutica, física, astronomía, geología y psicología de la percepción. Y su complejidad es fruto de la voluntad del artista de proponer un nuevo vocabulario de la luz que modifica la relación del espectador con el espacio de la obra. El espectador desorientado trata de enfrentarse a la ambigüedad generada por la incapacidad de distinguir entre su propio espacio y el de la obra. Este artículo pretende reflexionar sobre las implicaciones del giro hacia el arte ambiental, el énfasis en el espacio real, y el papel del espectador como un colaborador y un elemento fundamental de la obra

El texto que aquí se presenta estudia el uso de la luz como herramienta para conseguir una ESTRUCTURA ILUSORIA, centrándose en la Cúpula de l aCapilla del Bosque de Erik Gunnar Asplund, una cúpula de percepción difusa, suspendida en el aire por la luz

Capturing the Moment

The main topic of the thesis is time, the perception of time, and light. Based on my observations, thoughts and daily experiences in Helsinki as an “outsider”, I came up with the idea for the thesis. Time and light are very common things in our daily lives but rarely do we think about the relationship between them or their natures. This is the reason I chose them as the research topic. The purpose of my creative work part is to make an artwork to feel the existence of invisible things for the viewer, such as passing of time and light. I started working on the thesis in September 2012 and I had an exhibition of thesis artwork in the end of February 2013. This thesis also contains the outcome of the exhibition as the result of execution process

Chemistry: creating new worlds

The Biennale Kijkduin is an international exhibition at the southerly beach resort of Kijkduin in The Hague. Sea and dunes form the natural setting for the monumental works of glass and light art. The Biennale asks artists and designers to visualise the chemical mentality in modern glass and light installations. Appropriate, as glass and transparency are inseparable from chemistry. First and foremost, glass itself is the chemical compound of mainly fused sand, calcium and sodium carbonate. And as far as science is concerned, without glass flasks and test tubes there would be no experiments, and no clarity in processes. Glass and light art is the medium par excellence for the investigative adventure of the ‘CHEMISTRY – Creating new Worlds’ exhibition. Lucy + Jorge Orta will present 'Glass, Light and Nature experiences', a newly commissioned body of work which is part of the artists' ongoing project OrtaWater
