An empirical investigation of factors affecting cloud computing adoption among SMEs in the North East of England
PhD ThesisThe growing adoption of cloud computing is changing the way business
information systems are developed, scaled up, maintained and paid for. This not only
applies to large organisations, but also increasingly to small and medium-sized
businesses (SMEs). In particular, cloud computing promises to improve the reliability
and scalability of IT systems, which allows SMEs to focus their limited resources on
their core business and strategy. In the SME context, technology adoption and usage
decisions are influenced by many factors. Despite the extensive literature, there is still
limited research related to the factors which impact on SMEs' adoption of Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT) innovations. By adopting the Technological,
Organisational and Environmental (TOE) Model, this research project attempts to
conceptualise cloud computing adoption and to enhance understanding of the range of
factors affecting cloud computing adoption decision making in SMEs. This work
utilises both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to meet the research
objectives. This study proposes a conceptual framework of SMEs' adoption of cloud
computing. Before carrying out a survey to test this model, a preliminary empirical
study involving 15 SMEs in the North east of England was conducted in order to
specify the factors that can be included within the developed conceptual framework.
Our pilot study findings were fed into the second stage of our empirical study involving
184 SMEs in the North East of England. Among the factors examined, relative
advantage, uncertainty, innovativeness, and external computing support were found to
have significant influence on whether SMEs adopted cloud computing. These findings
have important implications and great value to the research community, managers and
ICT providers, in terms of formulating better strategies for cloud computing adoption.
The research model in this study can improve their understanding of why some SMEs
choose to adopt cloud computing services, while seemingly similar ones facing similar
market conditions do no

Cost and reward as motivating factors in distributed collaborative learning assignments : a grounded theory analasis
The objective of this research study was to obtain a better understanding of the factors that affect lecturer and student participation in distributed collaborative learning assignments (DCLAs). A substantial number of courses worldwide have included DCLAs in their curricula in an attempt to teach students virtual communication and teaming skills, and to allow distributed students to learn course content collaboratively in a virtual environment. The execution and management of these assignments have proven to be more challenging that expected. Several attempts reported on in the literature had to be abandoned when cost exceeded the rewards for both lecturers and students. In a fouryear cyclical action research project carried out at the PETech (Port Elizabeth Technikon, currently part of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa), ICT students at several of the PETech campuses were required to complete a DCLA in virtual teams. This project also had to be terminated when it was realised that virtual team learning was minimal and the time investment unacceptably high. For the research study reported on in this thesis the data collected during the four âpreresearchâ cycles and the experiences reported in the literature were analysed. The lessons learnt were applied to a new additional DCLA cycle which formed part of an ICT course, although this execution still showed room for improvement. A second additional cycle was then executed which had a high participation rate and was overwhelmingly labelled by the participating students as a valuable and enjoyable learning experience. Analysis of the factors affecting participation in DCLAs shows that they are numerous and tightly interlinked, and that each factor is able to take on a wide range of values. This complicates descriptive reporting as each of the DCLAs was unique with unique outcomes and would have to be reported as such in order to iii ABSTRACT iv gain an understanding of the factors. Hence, a level of abstraction was needed, which was accomplished by applying the traditional Glaserian grounded theory method to the data collected during the four âpreresearchâ and the two additional cycles, and from the literature on the topic. The outcome is a perceived costs and rewards (PCR) theory for participation in DCLAs. As participation is crucial for the learning experience of each student as well as his/her team members in an action learning environment, deciding on participation by continually calculating the costs versus rewards became the focal point of the theory. To the best of the authorâs knowledge this research study makes a theoretical contribution to the existing body of ICT educational knowledge in the form of a perceived costs and rewards theory for DCLA participation and a practical contribution in that it provides a theory that can be used to explain, understand, interpret and predict participation in DCLAs. This research study provides guidance for future research in both of these areas

Distribution service : competition within and among retail formats
Distribution service provision is an important instrument for the creation of availability. The book addresses in five parts the role of distribution service in individual channel member decision making in a competitive retailing environment through theoretical and empirical modeling and analysis. The empirical applications all concern the Dutch domestic cut flower market. The book starts in part I with development of a new and integrative conceptualization for distribution service elaborating on views from logistics, economics, and psychology. The second part of the book addresses the theory underlying consumer evaluation of and choice from assortments. It provides a theoretical framework of consumption goals, situational, and contextual variables, including retailer distribution service provision, as determinants of consumer evaluation of and choice from assortments. Several hypotheses are tested in an empirical study. Extended multinomial logit modeling of the experimental choice data has been used as a tool for optimization of retail assortments. Part III investigates the role of retail distribution service provision in consumer post-purchase evaluation processes and extends existing research on consumer post-purchase evaluation. Part IV focuses on the role of distribution service in vertical and horizontal strategic interactions between channel members, particularly between manufacturers and retailers, and its consequences for the emergence of different channel structures and retail formats. A game-theoretic model has been developed for retail competition with respect to price and distribution service and its consequences for the emergence of differentiated retail formats. Finally, part V discusses research implications and future research challenges.</p
