Scattering invisibility with free-space field enhancement of all-dielectric nanoparticles
Simultaneous scattering invisibility and free-space field enhancement have
been achieved based on multipolar interferences among all-dielectric
nanoparticles. The scattering properties of all-dielectric nanowire quadrumers
are investigated and two sorts of scattering invisibilities have been
identified: the trivial invisibility where the individual nanowires are not
effectively excited; and the nontrivial invisibility with strong multipolar
excitations within each nanowire, which results in free-space field enhancement
outside the particles. It is revealed that such nontrivial invisibility
originates from not only the simultaneous excitations of both electric and
magnetic resonances, but also their significant magnetoelectric
cross-interactions. We further show that the invisibility obtained is both
polarization and direction selective, which can probably play a significant
role in various applications including non-invasive detection, sensing, and
non-disturbing medical diagnosis with high sensitivity and precision.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures and comments are welcom
The Visible and the Invisible Hilary Mantel
This talk addresses the scarcity of critical material on Hilary Mantel’s writing in the academy. It questions the suitability of the ‘origin’ paradigm within the criticism that is available, which closes off the excess of Mantel’s texts through attempts to ‘unite’ her corpus. The ambiguity of her writing, and its suspicions, suggest Jacques Derrida’s thought as a pertinent means to read the differences in her work differently. The proximity of Jean-Luc Nancy’s philosophy with Derrida’s thought allows the significance of ellipsis to surface as a liberating catalyst for weaving the implications of Derrida’s thinking through the writing of Mantel. This synthesis constitutes an original combination because Mantel’s writing has not been closely studied, Derrida’s notion of ellipsis has been eclipsed by philosophy, and the combination of these two ‘invisibilities’ is seminal.
The talk begins with an exploration of the mythologies I discovered and interrogated during the course of my thesis. It then considers the key points in Mantel’s writing career. In particular taking her from the difficulty and invisibility of 1979 when A Place of Greater Safety, her first novel, was rejected, to winning the Booker prize twice in succession in 2009 and 2012. It thereby traces the story of her shift from invisible to infamous, in terms of her treatment by the mainstream British media as well as her phenomenal post-millennium success.Universidad de Málaga. Poetry, Gender and Teaching: Building Students’ Character through Multicultural Literature
This paper is aimed to explore the concern of gender in teaching poetry as an effort to build student’s character through multicultural literature. The students’ success in life is based on 80% of their soft skill. This is in line with the objective of teaching literature that focuses on developing the affective side of the students. Gender problem is one of the crucial and complicated issues in contemporary multicultural society. Gender issues cover various disciplines; literature and education are among them. These multicultural circumstances, including gender, are portrayed in poetry of multicultural poet’s background. This can be used as rich and inspiring resources for teaching poetry and is valuable for developing students’ character that gets weak from time to time. This weakening condition is caused by the teaching method focusing on developing more and more the cognitive side of the students. Poetry and literature in general, bears human soul that touches four elements of human being: intellectual, sense, imagination and emotion. Thus, teaching poetry can develop gender awareness of the students to prepare themselves be persons with strong character to live in contemporary life which are full of gender problems
To Have To Do With The Law: An Essay
This is an experimental text with three voices. The first one is an autoethnographic study of being called on jury service at the Old Bailey, London. The second is a theoretical voice, analysing the theory of the lawscape as I have developed it in my writings, in combination with issues about atmospherics, enclosures, control of bodies and spaces, and temporalities of law. The third voice operates as commentary on the other two and the whole chapter as such, offering an antilogos to the traditional understanding of essay writing, especially for law students but also for academics. This last voice suggests the disruption of the flow of textuality in order for materiality to flood in
Time-of-flight imaging of invisibility cloaks
As invisibility cloaking has recently become experimental reality, it is
interesting to explore ways to reveal remaining imperfections. In essence, the
idea of most invisibility cloaks is to recover the optical path lengths without
an object (to be made invisible) by a suitable arrangement around that object.
Optical path length is proportional to the time of flight of a light ray or to
the optical phase accumulated by a light wave. Thus, time-of-flight images
provide a direct and intuitive tool for probing imperfections. Indeed, recent
phase-sensitive experiments on the carpet cloak have already made early steps
in this direction. In the macroscopic world, time-of-flight images could be
measured directly by light detection and ranging (LIDAR). Here, we show
calculated time-of-flight images of the conformal Gaussian carpet cloak, the
conformal grating cloak, the cylindrical free-space cloak, and of the invisible
sphere. All results are obtained by using a ray-velocity equation of motion
derived from Fermat's principle.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, journal pape

The "Non-favourite": Neo-tribal Sexualities on Celluloid
Much academic ink has been spilt over the way in which female subjectivities and sexualities are constructed in the public domain. Issues of female sexuality form a huge part of queer studies and feminist accounts. Surprisingly enough, the construction of female sexualities and more specifically bisexuality has never been worth mentioning in the accounts of subcultures. The transition from subcultures to neo-tribes and neo-tribal sociality has paid scant attention to the construction of female sexualities. Even more importantly, most academic accounts deal with the construction of female sexuality as usually being strictly kept within the limitations of the familiar, familial and predominantly straight sexuality. This article examines the ways in which female subjectivities and sexualities are constructed on celluloid canvas through an examination of a recent movie called “Disobedience” by the Chilean director Sebastian Lelio as forming an integral part of neo-tribes. It takes a different view on the construction of female sexualities as it locates this construction within the transition from subcultures to neo-tribes. This paper puts forward the suggestion that female sexuality apart from being a product of a number of different socio-cultural relationships, norms and laws, it mainly exposes the dynamics of not just subcultures but also neo-tribes at play. The first part of the article places the formation of female sexuality within the transition from subcultures to neo-tribes. The second part of the paper discusses the way in which class informs female sexuality within the context of neo-tribes. The final part of the article places the discussion on the construction of female sexualities within the overall context of juxtaposing neo-tribal lifestyle choices
