A Design Science Research Approach to Smart and Collaborative Urban Supply Networks
Urban supply networks are facing increasing demands and challenges and thus constitute a relevant field for research and practical development. Supply chain management holds enormous potential and relevance for society and everyday life as the flow of goods and information are important economic functions. Being a heterogeneous field, the literature base of supply chain management research is difficult to manage and navigate. Disruptive digital technologies and the implementation of cross-network information analysis and sharing drive the need for new organisational and technological approaches. Practical issues are manifold and include mega trends such as digital transformation, urbanisation, and environmental awareness.
A promising approach to solving these problems is the realisation of smart and collaborative supply networks. The growth of artificial intelligence applications in recent years has led to a wide range of applications in a variety of domains. However, the potential of artificial intelligence utilisation in supply chain management has not yet been fully exploited. Similarly, value creation increasingly takes place in networked value creation cycles that have become continuously more collaborative, complex, and dynamic as interactions in business processes involving information technologies have become more intense.
Following a design science research approach this cumulative thesis comprises the development and discussion of four artefacts for the analysis and advancement of smart and collaborative urban supply networks. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of artificial intelligence-based supply networks, to advance data-driven inter-organisational collaboration, and to improve last mile supply network sustainability. Based on thorough machine learning and systematic literature reviews, reference and system dynamics modelling, simulation, and qualitative empirical research, the artefacts provide a valuable contribution to research and practice
Big Tech and research funding: A bibliometric approach
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Business AnalyticsTechnology companies have radically transformed our daily life in the recent years with help of the wide usage of internet. While transforming our lives, these companies also have grown up even bigger in the recent times and have become more powerful not only financially, but also in terms of computing power and data. Although there have been lots of research done on the influence of large digital economy players (Big Tech) in different fields, the academic influence of these companies is little understood. By drawing on 130,000 academic papers for which there is evidence of support by the Big Tech, the present work applies bibliometric approaches (on the metadata) and text mining techniques (on the contents) to shed a light on the outcomes of this relationship. In particular, we take into consideration research funding (direct strategies) and conference sponsorships (indirect strategies) to empirically explore this relatively unexplored side of Big Tech’s influence in contemporary society. While developing the analysis a key limitation was the scarcity of prior work exploring the connections between digital platforms and the scientific enterprise. There are several results that come to light from such a perspective, one of these findings is that among the research supported by Big Tech companies, there is big gap between the number of outcomes with the content about the technical perspectives (like machine learning or artificial intelligence) than the content about reflexive (say ethical or environmental) dimensions of innovation, ladder being very small. These findings may stimulate further inquiries into identifying the possible risks, if any, are generated from the direct and indirect financial support by corporate informational giants to academia. The causes and consequences of this non-market activity by companies with big market power may require further attention and research in this field
Bridging technology and educational psychology: an exploration of individual differences in technology-assisted language learning within an Algerian EFL setting
The implementation of technology in language learning and teaching has a great influence onthe teaching and learning process as a whole and its impact on the learners’ psychological state seems of paramount significance, since it could be either an aid or a barrier to students’ academic performance. This thesis therefore explores individual learner differences in technology-assisted language learning (TALL) and when using educational technologies in
higher education within an Algerian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting.
Although I initially intended to investigate the relationship between TALL and certain affective variables mainly motivation, anxiety, self-confidence, and learning styles inside the classroom, the collection and analysis of data shifted my focus to a holistic view of individual learner
differences in TALL environments and when using educational technologies within and beyond the classroom. In an attempt to bridge technology and educational psychology, this
ethnographic case study considers the nature of the impact of technology integration in language teaching and learning on the psychology of individual language learners inside and
outside the classroom. The study considers the reality constructed by participants and reveals multiple and distinctive views about the relationship between the use of educational technologies in higher education and individual learner differences. It took place in a university
in the north-west of Algeria and involved 27 main and secondary student and teacher participants. It consisted of focus-group discussions, follow-up discussions, teachers’
interviews, learners’ diaries, observation, and field notes. It was initially conducted within the classroom but gradually expanded to other settings outside the classroom depending on the availability of participants, their actions, and activities.
The study indicates that the impact of technology integration in EFL learning on individual learner differences is both complex and dynamic. It is complex in the sense that it is shown in multiple aspects and reflected on the students and their differences. In addition to various positive and different negative influences of different technology uses and the different psychological reactions among students to the same technology scenario, the study reveals the
unrecognised different manifestations of similar psychological traits in the same ELT technology scenario. It is also dynamic since it is characterised by constant change according to contextual approaches to and practical realities of technology integration in language teaching and learning in the setting, including discrepancies between students’ attitudes and teacher’ actions, mismatches between technological experiences inside and outside the classroom, local concerns and generalised beliefs about TALL in the context, and the rapid and unplanned shift to online educational delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic situation.
The study may therefore be of interest, not only to Algerian teachers and students, but also to academics and institutions in other contexts through considering the complex and dynamic
impact of TALL and technology integration at higher education on individual differences, and to academics in similar low-resource contexts by undertaking a context approach to technology integration

Explained: Artificial Intelligence for Propensity Score Estimation in Multilevel Educational Settings
Although educational research and evaluation generally occur in multilevel settings, many analyses ignore cluster effects. Neglecting the nature of data from educational settings, especially in non-randomized experiments, can result in biased estimates with long-term consequences. Our manuscript improves the availability and understanding of artificial neural networks, an underutilized method trending in other disciplines. This method also shows promise for dealing with challenges faced by educational researchers, such as analyzing clustered data. Therefore, we simulated data to generalize the potential benefits of artificial neural networks to different data types. We also compared artificial neural networks to more familiar methods and investigated the time it demanded to perform each technique. Hence, readers can decide when it may be more appropriate to use one method instead of another
Educating Sub-Saharan Africa:Assessing Mobile Application Use in a Higher Learning Engineering Programme
In the institution where I teach, insufficient laboratory equipment for engineering education pushed students to learn via mobile phones or devices. Using mobile technologies to learn and practice is not the issue, but the more important question lies in finding out where and how they use mobile tools for learning. Through the lens of Kearney et al.’s (2012) pedagogical model, using authenticity, personalisation, and collaboration as constructs, this case study adopts a mixed-method approach to investigate the mobile learning activities of students and find out their experiences of what works and what does not work. Four questions are borne out of the over-arching research question, ‘How do students studying at a University in Nigeria perceive mobile learning in electrical and electronic engineering education?’ The first three questions are answered from qualitative, interview data analysed using thematic analysis. The fourth question investigates their collaborations on two mobile social networks using social network and message analysis. The study found how students’ mobile learning relates to the real-world practice of engineering and explained ways of adapting and overcoming the mobile tools’ limitations, and the nature of the collaborations that the students adopted, naturally, when they learn in mobile social networks. It found that mobile engineering learning can be possibly located in an offline mobile zone. It also demonstrates that investigating the effectiveness of mobile learning in the mobile social environment is possible by examining users’ interactions. The study shows how mobile learning personalisation that leads to impactful engineering learning can be achieved. The study shows how to manage most interface and technical challenges associated with mobile engineering learning and provides a new guide for educators on where and how mobile learning can be harnessed. And it revealed how engineering education can be successfully implemented through mobile tools
From wallet to mobile: exploring how mobile payments create customer value in the service experience
This study explores how mobile proximity payments (MPP) (e.g., Apple Pay) create customer value in the service experience compared to traditional payment methods (e.g. cash and card). The main objectives were firstly to understand how customer value manifests as an outcome in the MPP service experience, and secondly to understand how the customer activities in the process of using MPP create customer value. To achieve these objectives a conceptual framework is built upon the Grönroos-Voima Value Model (Grönroos and Voima, 2013), and uses the Theory of Consumption Value (Sheth et al., 1991) to determine the customer value constructs for MPP, which is complimented with Script theory (Abelson, 1981) to determine the value creating activities the consumer does in the process of paying with MPP.
The study uses a sequential exploratory mixed methods design, wherein the first qualitative stage uses two methods, self-observations (n=200) and semi-structured interviews (n=18). The subsequent second quantitative stage uses an online survey (n=441) and Structural Equation Modelling analysis to further examine the relationships and effect between the value creating activities and customer value constructs identified in stage one. The academic contributions include the development of a model of mobile payment services value creation in the service experience, introducing the concept of in-use barriers which occur after adoption and constrains the consumers existing use of MPP, and revealing the importance of the mobile in-hand momentary condition as an antecedent state. Additionally, the customer value perspective of this thesis demonstrates an alternative to the dominant Information Technology approaches to researching mobile payments and broadens the view of technology from purely an object a user interacts with to an object that is immersed in consumers’ daily life

Platform protocol place: a practice-based study of critical media art practice (2007-2020)
This practice-based research project focuses on critical media art practices in contemporary digital culture. The theoretical framework employed in this inquiry draws from the work of the Frankfurt School, in particular Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception. Using Adorno & Horkheimer’s thesis as a theoretical guide, this research project formulates the concept of the digital culture industry - a concept that refers to the contemporary era of networked capitalism, an era defined by the unprecedented extraction, accumulation and manipulation of data and the material and digital infrastructures that facilitate it. This concept is used as a framing mechanism that articulates certain techno-political concerns within networked capitalism and responds to them through practice.
The second concept formulated within this research project is Platform Protocol Place. The function of this second concept is to frame and outline the body of practice-based work developed in this study. It is also used to make complex technological issues accessible and to communicate these issues through public exhibition and within this written thesis.
The final concept developed in this research project is tactical media archaeology. This concept describes the techniques and approaches employed in the development of the body of practice-based work that are the central focus of this research project. This approach is a synthesis of two subfields of media art practice and theory, tactical media and media archaeology. Through practice, tactical media archaeology critiques the geopolitical machinations and systems beneath the networked devices and interfaces of the digital culture industry
'Inventions and adventures': the work of the Stevenson engineering firm in Scotland, c. 1830 - c. 1890
This thesis examines the work of the nineteenth-century Stevenson civil engineering firm to argue
that civil engineering should be approached geographically both because it takes place in and is
shaped by particular spaces, but also because the result of such work reshapes space and the
relationship between places. Geographers have extensively analysed the ways in which humans
have worked to alter environments, but relatively little attention has been paid to engineering as a
socially and geographically transformative process, to the technical questions and to the engineering
professionals whose work brought about such change. This thesis analyses engineers as social and
technical agents of environmental change, rather than viewing their role as the simple
implementation of directives developed elsewhere and by others. It combines insights from the
history and historical geography of science, environmental history and the history of technology to
make a case for the relevance of an historical geography of engineering.
The thesis explores these issues through the work of the Stevenson family. The Stevensons
were an Edinburgh-based and internationally-renowned firm of engineers who specialised in the
construction of coastal infrastructure. The start and end dates of the thesis indicate, broadly, the
careers of David and Thomas Stevenson, who jointly managed the family firm under the name D. &
T. Stevenson between 1850 and 1886. The empirical basis for this thesis draws upon the detailed
analysis of the firm’s archival records: technical publications, project reports, diaries,
correspondence, maps, plans and diagrams.
The work of the Stevensons—their engineering epistemologies, practices, and professional
identities— are examined through four diverse projects undertaken by the firm in the nineteenth
century. These projects are: the training of new engineers; surveying and designing improvement
works for the rivers Tay and Clyde; the implementation of a coastal sound-based fog signal network;
and the failed attempt to expand Wick harbour through the construction of a breakwater. These
projects highlight the range of activities undertaken by nineteenth-century engineers and illustrate
the ‘making’ of engineers and the work they did by highlighting training and learning, surveying,
maintenance, testing, evaluation, repair and the explanation of failure. With reference to these
projects and by drawing upon relevant contextual material, the thesis examines the
conceptualisation of geographical space and natural forces in engineering, the relationship between
science and engineering, the nature of expertise and notions of engineering judgement, and the role
of family, legacy and reputation in securing professional credibility and status.
This approach challenges older historiographical traditions which portrayed engineers as
individual geniuses. The thesis instead understands engineering to be a combination of specialist
knowledge and tacit skill and situates engineers within their social and institutional networks of
power and authority. In pointing out that some engineering works failed, the thesis challenges the
tendency in histories of engineering works to focus on success. It makes the case for an historical
geography of engineering as a way of understanding engineering as an activity, a status and as
processes which changed human-environment relations
Optimización del rendimiento y la eficiencia energética en sistemas masivamente paralelos
RESUMEN Los sistemas heterogéneos son cada vez más relevantes, debido a sus capacidades de rendimiento y eficiencia energética, estando presentes en todo tipo de plataformas de cómputo, desde dispositivos embebidos y servidores, hasta nodos HPC de grandes centros de datos. Su complejidad hace que sean habitualmente usados bajo el paradigma de tareas y el modelo de programación host-device. Esto penaliza fuertemente el aprovechamiento de los aceleradores y el consumo energético del sistema, además de dificultar la adaptación de las aplicaciones.
La co-ejecución permite que todos los dispositivos cooperen para computar el mismo problema, consumiendo menos tiempo y energía. No obstante, los programadores deben encargarse de toda la gestión de los dispositivos, la distribución de la carga y la portabilidad del código entre sistemas, complicando notablemente su programación.
Esta tesis ofrece contribuciones para mejorar el rendimiento y la eficiencia energética en estos sistemas masivamente paralelos. Se realizan propuestas que abordan objetivos generalmente contrapuestos: se mejora la usabilidad y la programabilidad, a la vez que se garantiza una mayor abstracción y extensibilidad del sistema, y al mismo tiempo se aumenta el rendimiento, la escalabilidad y la eficiencia energética. Para ello, se proponen dos motores de ejecución con enfoques completamente distintos.
EngineCL, centrado en OpenCL y con una API de alto nivel, favorece la máxima compatibilidad entre todo tipo de dispositivos y proporciona un sistema modular extensible. Su versatilidad permite adaptarlo a entornos para los que no fue concebido, como aplicaciones con ejecuciones restringidas por tiempo o simuladores HPC de dinámica molecular, como el utilizado en un centro de investigación internacional.
Considerando las tendencias industriales y enfatizando la aplicabilidad profesional, CoexecutorRuntime proporciona un sistema flexible centrado en C++/SYCL que dota de soporte a la co-ejecución a la tecnología oneAPI. Este runtime acerca a los programadores al dominio del problema, posibilitando la explotación de estrategias dinámicas adaptativas que mejoran la eficiencia en todo tipo de aplicaciones.ABSTRACT Heterogeneous systems are becoming increasingly relevant, due to their performance and energy efficiency capabilities, being present in all types of computing platforms, from embedded devices and servers to HPC nodes in large data centers. Their complexity implies that they are usually used under the task paradigm and the host-device programming model. This strongly penalizes accelerator utilization and system energy consumption, as well as making it difficult to adapt applications.
Co-execution allows all devices to simultaneously compute the same problem, cooperating to consume less time and energy. However, programmers must handle all device management, workload distribution and code portability between systems, significantly complicating their programming.
This thesis offers contributions to improve performance and energy efficiency in these massively parallel systems. The proposals address the following generally conflicting objectives: usability and programmability are improved, while ensuring enhanced system abstraction and extensibility, and at the same time performance, scalability and energy efficiency are increased. To achieve this, two runtime systems with completely different approaches are proposed.
EngineCL, focused on OpenCL and with a high-level API, provides an extensible modular system and favors maximum compatibility between all types of devices. Its versatility allows it to be adapted to environments for which it was not originally designed, including applications with time-constrained executions or molecular dynamics HPC simulators, such as the one used in an international research center.
Considering industrial trends and emphasizing professional applicability, CoexecutorRuntime provides a flexible C++/SYCL-based system that provides co-execution support for oneAPI technology. This runtime brings programmers closer to the problem domain, enabling the exploitation of dynamic adaptive strategies that improve efficiency in all types of applications.Funding: This PhD has been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education (FPU16/03299 grant),
