Introduction to Forum: The Hemispheric French Atlantic
“The Hemispheric French Atlantic” begins to suture a transatlantic to a hemispheric spatiality by tracing out the movement of texts, figures, and traditions within a complex and kinetic circulatory system that moves beyond the geometric model imagined by studies of the French Atlantic triangle. In tracking the discourses of politics, literature, and anthropology through a hemispheric French Atlantic space complicated by race and slavery, these five literary critical essays focus on the legacies of violence and promise that radiate through time and space from the Haitian revolutionary moment, spiraling across and beyond the long nineteenth century while circling across and around the wider Atlantic world. The forum insists on the inclusion of an extensive and under-studied archive of Francophone texts in our literary histories of the period and field, while also suggesting the need for greater flexibility in constructing the narratives through which we study literature, culture, and politics. They call especially for greater study and interrogation of the role of translation—not just between languages but between geographical locations and political orientations—in the post-revolutionary nineteenth century
Midwives’ engagement in smoking- and alcohol-prevention in prenatal care before and after the introduction of practice guidelines in Switzerland : comparison of survey findings from 2008 and 2018
Background:
Evidence suggests that cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy negatively impacts fetal health. Health agencies across countries have developed specific guidelines for health professionals in perinatal care to strengthen their role in smoking and alcohol use prevention. One such example is the “Guideline on Screening and Counselling for prevention of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption before, during, and after pregnancy” introduced by the Swiss Midwives Association in 2011. The current study assesses the changes in midwives’ engagement in smoking and alcohol use prevention before (2008) and after the introduction of the Guideline (2018). Further, the current study examines differences across regions (German vs. French speaking regions), graduation years (before and after the introduction of the Guideline) and different work settings (hospital vs. self-employed).
Methods:
Survey data were collected in 2008 (n = 366) and in 2018 (n = 459). Differences in how midwives engaged in smoking and alcohol use prevention between 2008 and 2018 were assessed with chi-square tests, as were differences across German and French speaking regions, graduation years (before and after the introduction of the Guideline) and across different work settings (working in hospitals or as self-employed).
Results:
An increase in midwives’ awareness of the risks of consuming even small quantities of cigarettes and alcohol for the unborn child between 2008 and 2018 is evident. Explaining the risks to pregnant women who smoke or use alcohol remained the most frequently reported prevention strategy. However, engagement with more extensive smoking and alcohol use preventive strategies across the whole course of pregnancy, such as assisting women in the elaboration of a plan to stop smoking/alcohol use, remained limited.
Conclusions:
Seven years after its introduction, the effectiveness of the Guideline in increasing midwives’ engagement in smoking and alcohol use prevention appears limited despite midwives’ increased awareness
Exchange rate exposure, foreign currency derivatives and the introduction of the euro : French evidence
We investigate the impact of the introduction of the Euro on exchange rate exposures for French corporations and examine the corporate use of foreign currency derivatives to hedge exchange rate exposure post-Euro. Our findings indicate that the introduction of the Euro is associated with both a reduction in the number of firms that have significant exchange rate exposure and the absolute size of exposure. Consistent with these reduced exposures, French firms use foreign currency derivatives less intensively. Furthermore, the use of foreign currency derivatives is found to be associated with lower exchange rate exposure but there is insufficient evidence that these instruments are more effective in the post-Euro environment
Salvetti complex, spectral sequences and cohomology of Artin groups
The aim of this short survey is to give a quick introduction to the Salvetti
complex as a tool for the study of the cohomology of Artin groups. In
particular we show how a spectral sequence induced by a filtration on the
complex provides a very natural and useful method to study recursively the
cohomology of Artin groups, simplifying many computations. In the last section
some examples of applications are presented.Comment: 22 pages, abstract in French and Englis
ITS for Teaching French
Abstract: The paper depicts the blueprint of an electronic wise indicating system for demonstrating learning French to understudies to overcome the inconveniences they go up against. The fundamental idea of this structure is a proficient introduction into learning French. The system shows the purpose of learning French and coordinates thusly made issues for the understudies to clarify. The system is logically balanced at run time to the understudy’s individual progress. The system gives unequivocal help to adaptable presentation to learners
L’UTILISATION DE LA MÉTHODE PROBLEM BASED INTRODUCTION POUR AMÉLIORER LA COMPÉTENCE DE LA PRODUCTION ÉCRITE
This paper aims to examine the use of methode Problem Based Introduction in French language writing skills in college or high school, and to obtain information about the benefits of the use this method in learning the French language. Through the application of this method it can be expected that students would be motivated to practice and to write the French language in accordance with the syllabus of the French language used in college. The results of the study indicated that the methode Problem Based Introduction can be implementedin learning the French language through learning that has been developed to assist teachers in teaching along with how to use it
Evaluating the impact of the French tax credit on the employment rate of women
This paper investigates the employment impact of a new tax-credit programme that was put in place in France in 2001. We study the introduction of both this measure and a later reform in 2004 that made the tax credit cashable in advance upon returning to work. We adopt a non-experimental evaluation method. The data for the analysis are drawn from the French Labour Force Surveys over the period 1999 to 2005. Due to the break in the French LFS series in 2003, we analyze separately the two periods 1999-2002 and 2003-05, as well as pooling the data over 1999-2005, under particular assumptions. We find evidence of a significantly negative employment effect for married women, with a reduction of about 3.2-3.4 percentage points in their employment rate after the introduction of the policy. The impact is positive and weakly significant for cohabiting women, while positive but statistically insignificant for lone mothers. We do not find any evidence of an additional effect of the tax credit due to the cashable advance credit reform of 2004.policy evaluation; difference-in-differences estimator; labour supply
An introduction to Mandelbrot cascades
In this course, we propose an elementary and self-contained introduction to
canonical Mandelbrot random cascades. The multiplicative construction is
explained and the necessary and sufficient condition of non-degeneracy is
proved. Then, we discuss the problem of the existence of moments and the link
with nondegeneracy. We also calculate the almost sure dimension of the
measures. Finally, we give an outline on multifractal analysis of Mandelbrot
cascades. This course was delivered in september 2013 during a meeting of the
"Multifractal Analysis GDR" (GDR no 3475 of the french CNRS).Comment: 36 page
