The Sound/Music Dilemma: Why Is It That All Music Is Sound but Only Some Sounds Are Music?
Even if sound and music are deeply intertwined phenomena, it is still fiercely debated whether all music is made up of sound, and vice versa, whether all sound can be deemed as music. Researchers from many different backgrounds have proposed numerous solutions to the conundrum; however, most of them analyse music and sound out of their natural context, ignoring not negligible variables such as listeners and cognitive constraints.
This paper fills this gap, by introducing a theoretical model, called the Circle of Sound, which aims to solve the sound/music dilemma. The Circle of Sound is based on cognition, and has been developed according to the concepts of musical complexity, musical understanding and musical enjoyment. By combining these concepts, a new operational definition of music is proposed. The theoretical framework provided can also be used as a basis for future experimental investigations, willing to shed some light on how musical is understood by

AFFORDANCES AND CONSTRAINTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE IN ePARTICIPATION: PERSPECTIVES FROM INDONESIAN POLITICIANS
In this study, we explore social media use by politicians by investigating affordances, effects and associated constraints of introducing social media within eParticipation. Based on an interpretive case study in the Indonesian context, involving members of both national and provincial parliament, this study unearths internal and external affordances offered by social media. Internally, among politicians, social media enable, for example, idea storming and information sharing; while externally in the relation with their constituents, social media is used, for instance, for opinion gathering and political networking. These affordances yield both internal and external effects, such as broadened perspective, improved internal political supports, better public control, and better information for decision-making. This study also unveils constraints that hinder politicians in utilizing possibilities offered by social media in the eParticipation context. Theoretical contributions and practical implication are also presented, including classification of internal and external social media affordance, identification of constraints and affordance effects. This study is adding contribution to practice by helping politicians to design social media strategy for eParticipation
Mask-compliant orthogonal precoding for spectrally efficient OFDM
Orthogonal precoding constitutes a powerful technique to reduce spectrum sidelobes of multicarrier signals. This reduction is bought at the cost of introducing precoder redundancy, which results in some throughput loss and additional precoding/decoding complexity. When the goal is to meet some spectral emission mask constraints, it is desirable to avoid unnecessary sidelobe suppression in order to keep precoder redundancy at a minimum. In this context, we introduce a general framework under which we develop a novel Lagrange multiplier-based mask-compliant orthogonal precoder design targeting minimal redundancy. We also adapt to this framework two previously proposed designs based on spectral notches and minimum out-of-band emission, respectively, to explicitly incorporate mask constraints. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed designs under different practical masks for multicarrier wireless systems.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. A Projection to the Pure Spinor Space
This article is based on a talk given at the Memorial Conference for
Maximilian Kreuzer at the ESI in Vienna and contains a compact summary of a
recent collaboration with P.A. Grassi. A non-linear projection from the space
of SO(10) Weyl spinors to the space of pure spinors is presented together with
some of its particular properties. This projection can be used to remove the
constraints from Berkovits' pure spinor superstring while introducing
additional gauge symmetries. This should allow to make transitions to
equivalent formulations which might shed light on the origin of the pure spinor
ghosts. It might also be useful in the context of path integral measures for
the pure spinor string.Comment: 9 page
