Evaluation of a prototype interface for structured document retrieval

    Get PDF
Document collections often display either internal structure, in the form of the logical arrangement of document components, or external structure, in the form of links between documents. Structured document retrieval systems aim to exploit this structural information to provide users with more effective access to structured documents. To do this, the associated interface must both represent this information explicitly and support users in their browsing behaviour. This paper describes the implementation and user-centred evaluation of a prototype interface, the RelevanceLinkBar interface. The results of the evaluation show that the RelevanceLinkBar interface supported users in their browsing behaviour, allowing them to find more relevant documents, and was strongly preferred over a standard results interface

This document presents the internal and external testing results for the BlogForever case studies. The evaluation of the BlogForever implementation process is tabulated under the most relevant themes and aspects obtained within the testing processes. The case studies provide relevant feedback for the sustainability of the platform in terms of potential users’ needs and relevant information on the possible long term impact

Short Notes about Financial Reporting in Italian Family Businesses

The main purpose of the paper is to analyse some features regarding economic and financial communication in Italian family companies. This is a theoretical essay focuses on to point out the new role played by balance sheet as a public document which carries all information needed by players operating both inside and outside the company. Paper shows the long and troubled process of transforming balance sheet from internal document to an official document useful to stakeholder to measure and evaluate family business performance and to implement accountable and responsible behaviour. The most important aspects being considered are: 1) the relationship link-ing balance sheet and stakeholders; 2) the relationship between company-family and patrimony-marriage; 3) the consequences caused to the balance sheet by measurement regulations.family business; balance sheet; accountability; financial reporting; firm behaviour; stakeholders.

Corporate Governance, Competition and Firm Performance: Evidence from India.

The aim of this paper is to show the interaction effect of product market competition and corporate governance variables on firm performance. While the linkage between internal governance mechanism and firm performance is well established in several studies, the interaction between internal and external governance mechanism has received scanty attention in emerging market economies. Here we have shown the independent and interaction effect of ownership and competition variable on firm productivity. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we document that competition has in reality become a discernible force in developing economies. The econometric modelling result shows while the standalone effect of ownership variable on productivity is mostly insignificant, there is a strong positive interaction effect with competition variables.

    Thermal transport in SiC nanostructures

SiC is a robust semiconductor material considered ideal for high-power application due to its material stability and large bulk thermal conductivity defined by the very fast phonons. In this paper, however, we show that both material-interface scattering and total-internal reflection significantly limit the SiC-nanostructure phonon transport and hence the heat dissipation in a typical device. For simplicity we focus on planar SiC nanostructures and calculate the thermal transport both parallel to the layers in a substrate/SiC/oxide heterostructure and across a SiC/metal gate or contact. We find that the phonon-interface scattering produces a heterostructure thermal conductivity significantly smaller than what is predicted in a traditional heat-transport calculation. We also document that the high-temperature heat flow across the metal/SiC interface is limited by total-internal reflection effects and maximizes with a small difference in the metal/SiC sound velocities.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
