Interactive Camera Network Design using a Virtual Reality Interface
Traditional literature on camera network design focuses on constructing
automated algorithms. These require problem specific input from experts in
order to produce their output. The nature of the required input is highly
unintuitive leading to an unpractical workflow for human operators. In this
work we focus on developing a virtual reality user interface allowing human
operators to manually design camera networks in an intuitive manner. From real
world practical examples we conclude that the camera networks designed using
this interface are highly competitive with, or superior to those generated by
automated algorithms, but the associated workflow is much more intuitive and
simple. The competitiveness of the human-generated camera networks is
remarkable because the structure of the optimization problem is a well known
combinatorial NP-hard problem. These results indicate that human operators can
be used in challenging geometrical combinatorial optimization problems given an
intuitive visualization of the problem.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Teaching Cultural Heritage using Mobile Augmented Reality
open2noThe relationship between augmented reality, mobile learning, gamification and non-formal education methods provide a great potential. The AR-CIMUVE Augmented Reality for the Walled Cities of the Veneto is an original project in collaboration with Italia Nostra and other associations which deal with transmitting our cultural heritage and which teach primary and middle school children the cultural and historical importance of the Veneto’s and the surrounding territories’ walled cities. In this learning experience students will explore how our environment has developed across the ages using the mobile devices with the technical back-up of the AR App. This will allow them to see maps, examine data, 3D models and will enable them to judge and improve their skills. From a pedagogical and educational point of view the emphasis is on a constructivist social-cultural approach which helps students to become active citizens more aware of their historical identity.openPetrucco, Corrado; Agostini, DanielePetrucco, Corrado; Agostini, Daniel
Space time pixels
This paper reports the design of a networked system, the aim of
which is to provide an intermediate virtual space that will
establish a connection and support interaction between multiple
participants in two distant physical spaces.
The intention of the project is to explore the potential of the
digital space to generate original social relationships between
people that their current (spatial or social) position can
difficultly allow the establishment of innovative connections.
Furthermore, to explore if digital space can sustain, in time,
low-level connections like these, by balancing between the two
contradicting needs of communication and anonymity.
The generated intermediate digital space is a dynamic reactive
environment where time and space information of two physical
places is superimposed to create a complex common ground where
interaction can take place. It is a system that provides
awareness of activity in a distant space through an abstract
mutable virtual environment, which can be perceived in several
different ways – varying from a simple dynamic background image
to a common public space in the junction of two private spaces or
to a fully opened window to the other space – according to the
participants will.
The thesis is that the creation of an intermediary environment
that operates as an activity abstraction filter between several
users, and selectively communicates information, could give
significance to the ambient data that people unconsciously
transmit to others when co-existing. It can therefore generate a new layer of connections and original interactivity patterns; in contrary to a straight-forward direct real video and sound
system, that although it is functionally more feasible, it
preserves the existing social constraints that limit interaction
into predefined patterns
