Glaucoma is a group of diseases that cause damage to both the optic nerve and the
retina, usually resulting in a loss of the patient鈥檚 field of vision. The most common type of
glaucoma is very difficult to detect for the person who suffers from it, since he/she does
not notice the loss in his/her field of vision until the disease is already quite advanced.
This causes great concern for early diagnosis of the disease. Once a patient is diagnosed
with glaucoma and properly medicated, the disease is likely to continue to progress. This
progression is the focus of research in this paper. The main objective is to provide the
ophthalmologist with an image of the progression of the disease, after a certain period
of time, from a current image that represents the state in which the subject is at that
moment.
Generative adversarial networks allow the creation of photorealistic images from a
set of images. There is a specific type of generative adversarial networks that is used
to perform image-to-image translation tasks, the Pix2Pix networks. These networks are
proposed as a versatile framework that allows using the same architecture and loss
function for different problems. In this work we make use of these networks to generate
a false image that shares characteristics with an image of a glaucomatous eye and that
reflects the evolution of the disease
