    Cockpit weather information needs

    The primary objective is to develop an advanced pilot weather interface for the flight deck and to measure its utilization and effectiveness in pilot reroute decision processes, weather situation awareness, and weather monitoring. Identical graphical weather displays for the dispatcher, air traffic control (ATC), and pilot crew should also enhance the dialogue capabilities for reroute decisions. By utilizing a broadcast data link for surface observations, forecasts, radar summaries, lightning strikes, and weather alerts, onboard weather computing facilities construct graphical displays, historical weather displays, color textual displays, and other tools to assist the pilot crew. Since the weather data is continually being received and stored by the airborne system, the pilot crew has instantaneous access to the latest information. This information is color coded to distinguish degrees of category for surface observations, ceiling and visibilities, and ground radar summaries. Automatic weather monitoring and pilot crew alerting is accomplished by the airborne computing facilities. When a new weather information is received, the displays are instantaneously changed to reflect the new information. Also, when a new surface or special observation for the intended destination is received, the pilot crew is informed so that information can be studied at the pilot's discretion. The pilot crew is also immediately alerted when a severe weather notice, AIRMET or SIGMET, is received. The cockpit weather display shares a multicolor eight inch cathode ray tube and overlaid touch panel with a pilot crew data link interface. Touch sensitive buttons and areas are used for pilot selection of graphical and data link displays. Time critical ATC messages are presented in a small window that overlays other displays so that immediate pilot alerting and action can be taken. Predeparture and reroute clearances are displayed on the graphical weather system so pilot review of weather along the route can be accomplished prior to pilot acceptance of the clearance. An ongoing multiphase test series is planned for testing and modifying the graphical weather system. Preliminary data shows that the nine test subjects considered the graphical presentation to be much better than their current weather information source for situation awareness, flight safety, and reroute decision making

    Understanding information needs of Australian business organisations

    Over the past decade, universities have used repositories as channels to create access to research outputs. Increasingly government and universities are seeking to optimise the impact of their research, particularly to improve public policy. This study looks at the impact of access to research from the perspective of business associations and researchers. It finds that business organisations value trusted timely, relevant research. Accessibility and peer-reviewed research outputs are highly valued but little used. Barriers to use of the research include availability (material not openly accessible), discoverability (ranking on search engines) and knowledge by trusted mediators and connectivity (presentation as part of a cohort of scholarly knowledge). Barriers for researchers include lack of rewards and recognition for research outputs focused on these organisations. The theories used in the study include triple helix, Kautto-Koivula and Huhtaniemi’s model for knowledge and competence management and actor network theory. The study concludes that significant work is required to improve the accessibility and discoverability of research.     Firm Location Decisions and Information Needs

    A significant portion of Georgia's economic development policy is targeted towards attracting businesses to locate in Georgia. In this process, businesses weigh their alternatives and select a location based on certain criteria. In order for businesses to accurately assess location alternatives, they must have appropriate information to assist in their decision process. In Georgia, a portion of this information comes from the Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism, and/or another economic development entity within the state. There is a gap in our knowledge, however, about how business prospects considering a location in Georgia perceive both the information that Georgia provides and the incentives that are offered in actual economic development deals. Business prospects include not only actual firms, but also the group of professional site location consultants around the country. In order to place Georgia in its most competitive position as well as to provide the most useful information to business prospects, it is important to understand the viewpoint of business prospects and the prospecting community in their business location decision process. This report documents the information needs of businesses seeking to relocate and perceptions of the usefulness of information provided in that process. Report #9

    Contextual queries express mobile information needs

    The users of mobile devices increasingly use networked services to address their information needs. Questions asked by mobile users are strongly influenced by contextual factors such as location, conversation and activity. We report on a diary study performed to better understand mobile information needs. We find that the type of questions recorded by participants varies across their locations, with differences between home, shopping and in-car contexts. These variations occur both in the query terms and in the form of desired answers. Both the location of queries and the participants' activities affected participants' questions. When information needs were affected by both location and activity, they tended to be strongly affected by both factors. The overall picture that emerges is one of multiple contextual influences interacting to shape mobile information needs. Mobile devices that attempt to adapt to users' context will need to account for a rich variety of situational factors

    CONSUMER CLUSTERS AND FOOD SAFETY INFORMATION NEEDS

    The work presented here was conducted as part of an EU-funded five year project investigating pathogens in the food chain, called "Control and prevention of emerging and future pathogens at cellular and molecular level throughout the food chain". Using a questionnaire, research was carried out with consumers in four countries to investigate food safety information needs and information source preferences. The work combined cluster analysis with a social marketing approach. Cluster analysis revealed that the majority of respondents can be allocated to one of eight clusters based on their information needs relating to food safety behaviour and pathogen knowledge. The respondents associated with each of the clusters can be described in terms of characteristics such as whether they have had any formal food safety education, the frequency with which they discuss food safety issues, their preferences for types of food safety messages, and a range of socio-demographic characteristics. The results provide potentially useful information for bodies designing food safety information dissemination strategies, and provide an approach for providing targeted dissemination programs that are directly connected to information needs.Consumer/Household Economics, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

    Public health careers: mapping information, informing practitioner needs

    Public health promotion and ill health prevention is a key priority for the NHS. The public health workforce is central to achieving improved health outcomes for a diverse and changing population. This mixed-methods study explored career practitioners’ views on their knowledge of the public health sector as well as the accessibility of public health career information on selected websites. The research suggested practitioners lacked awareness of public health opportunities and were only somewhat confident in providing public health career information.     Reproductive health information including STIs and HIV/AIDS has been provided in community health center. In fact, the level of adolescent knowledge in terms of sexual health and its risks is still low. This study aims to identify adolescent needs of information services on sexual and reproductive health including STIs and HIV/AIDS. All adolescent aged 15 to 19 years in Ngesrep village were recruited as a sample. There were 237 adolescents participated in this cross sectional study. The findings showed that half of them have low level of knowledge, nearly half have permissive sexual attitudes, 15% have engaged in sexual intercourse. Adolescents need comprehensive information including pregnancy, sexual diseases and HIV/AIDS which provided by health workers at school health programs

    Exploiting information needs and bibliographics for polyrepresentative document clustering

    In this paper we explore the potential of combining the principle of polyrepresentation with document clustering. Our idea is discussed and evaluated for polyrepresentation of information needs as wells as for document-based polyrepresentation where bibliographic information is used as representation. The main idea is to present the user with the highly ranked polyrepresentative clusters to support the search process. Our evaluation suggests that our approach is capable of increasing retrieval performance, but performance varies for queries with a high or low number of relevant documents
