    On the effect of rotation on magnetohydrodynamic turbulence at high magnetic Reynolds number

    This article is focused on the dynamics of a rotating electrically conducting fluid in a turbulent state. As inside the Earth's core or in various industrial processes, a flow is altered by the presence of both background rotation and a large scale magnetic field. In this context, we present a set of 3D direct numerical simulations of incompressible decaying turbulence. We focus on parameters similar to the ones encountered in geophysical and astrophysical flows, so that the Rossby number is small, the interaction parameter is large, but the Elsasser number, defining the ratio between Coriolis and Lorentz forces, is about unity. These simulations allow to quantify the effect of rotation and thus inertial waves on the growth of magnetic fluctuations due to Alfv\'en waves. Rotation prevents the occurrence of equipartition between kinetic and magnetic energies, with a reduction of magnetic energy at decreasing Elsasser number {\Lambda}. It also causes a decrease of energy transfer mediated by cubic correlations. In terms of flow structure, a decrease of {\Lambda} corresponds to an increase in the misalignment of velocity and magnetic field.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figure

    Detailed Numerical Simulations of Turbulent Premixed Flames at Moderate and High Karlovitz Numbers

    In generally accepted and applied flamelet combustion models, a turbulent flame is mainly assumed distorted by the large-scale turbulence eddies, whereas small-scale turbulence effects on the local flamelet structures are neglected. However, in a lot of industrial applications rather high turbulent intensities are often imposed, which induce turbulence scales at ranges smaller than the flame thickness. Flame/turbulence interaction appears quite different at these small scales, which is why improvement of the combustion models is required to account for these phenomena. In this thesis, direct numerical simulations (DNS) and large eddy simulations (LES) have been utilized for studies of lean premixed turbulent reactive flows at various turbulent intensities. DNS has been applied for detailed studies of flame-turbulence interaction to investigate flame structures and detailed chemistry effects at high Karlovitz numbers. Intensified convective-diffusive transport within the fine reaction zone layers is observed which is found to significantly alter the chemical pathway with, e.g., intensified heat release rate at low temperatures. Based on these observations a categorization, supplementary to the conventional one, is proposed, which is able to incorporate detailed chemistry effects into the classification of turbulent premixed flames at high Karlovitz numbers. The effect of differential diffusion was found significant, both globally (in terms of the fuel diffusion effect) and locally (in terms of the radical diffusion effect), also in the distributed reaction zone regime. LES was employed for a low swirl stabilized flame utilizing a flamelet combustion model approach. A dynamic modeling approach to incorporate sensitivity to local variations in the subgrid scale flame wrinkling was implemented and validated. The simulations showed high sensitivity of the prediction of turbulent flame fluctuations as well as ambient air entrainment rate into burned gases to inflow conditions and operating conditions. Lower sensitivity was found to domain size and combustion model. Overall the model results showed good agreement with the velocity and scalar validation data in the thin reaction zone regime. In order to analyze the influence of frequency specific coherent structures on the flame dynamics extended dynamic mode decomposition was performed which was able to delineate the effects of the inner and outer shear layer vorticity on the flame stabilization

    Large Eddy Simulations of gaseous flames in gas turbine combustion chambers

    Recent developments in numerical schemes, turbulent combustion models and the regular increase of computing power allow Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to be applied to real industrial burners. In this paper, two types of LES in complex geometry combustors and of specific interest for aeronautical gas turbine burners are reviewed: (1) laboratory-scale combustors, without compressor or turbine, in which advanced measurements are possible and (2) combustion chambers of existing engines operated in realistic operating conditions. Laboratory-scale burners are designed to assess modeling and funda- mental flow aspects in controlled configurations. They are necessary to gauge LES strategies and identify potential limitations. In specific circumstances, they even offer near model-free or DNS-like LES computations. LES in real engines illustrate the potential of the approach in the context of industrial burners but are more difficult to validate due to the limited set of available measurements. Usual approaches for turbulence and combustion sub-grid models including chemistry modeling are first recalled. Limiting cases and range of validity of the models are specifically recalled before a discussion on the numerical breakthrough which have allowed LES to be applied to these complex cases. Specific issues linked to real gas turbine chambers are discussed: multi-perforation, complex acoustic impedances at inlet and outlet, annular chambers.. Examples are provided for mean flow predictions (velocity, temperature and species) as well as unsteady mechanisms (quenching, ignition, combustion instabil- ities). Finally, potential perspectives are proposed to further improve the use of LES for real gas turbine combustor designs

    Practical application of CFD for wind loading on tall buildings

    This paper is concerned with assessing the scope of appicabiity for computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the field of structural engineering, with a particular reference to tall buildings. Modern design trends and advances in engineering materials have encouraged the demand for taller and more slender structures. This pattern induces inherent structural flexibility; these cases exceed the limitations of the quasi-static method offered by current codes of practice. Wind tunnel testing is the traditional solution for such dynamically sensitive structures. However, even this scaled modelling approach is clouded by some uncertainties, including scaling the Reynolds number and assuming damping values for the aeroelastic model. While CFD cannot be used as a replacement for wind tunnel testing, there are results within the literature to suggest it has the potential to act as a complimentary tool - provided it is used within its capabilities. The paper outlines the various turbulence models that are available and summarises the extent of their application in a practical structural engineering sense. It also details the user-defined criteria that must be satisfied and discusses the potential for simplified models in tall building CFD analyses, with a view to promoting more efficient and practical solutions

    Non-modal analysis of spectral element methods: Towards accurate and robust large-eddy simulations

    We introduce a \textit{non-modal} analysis technique that characterizes the diffusion properties of spectral element methods for linear convection-diffusion systems. While strictly speaking only valid for linear problems, the analysis is devised so that it can give critical insights on two questions: (i) Why do spectral element methods suffer from stability issues in under-resolved computations of nonlinear problems? And, (ii) why do they successfully predict under-resolved turbulent flows even without a subgrid-scale model? The answer to these two questions can in turn provide crucial guidelines to construct more robust and accurate schemes for complex under-resolved flows, commonly found in industrial applications. For illustration purposes, this analysis technique is applied to the hybridized discontinuous Galerkin methods as representatives of spectral element methods. The effect of the polynomial order, the upwinding parameter and the P\'eclet number on the so-called \textit{short-term diffusion} of the scheme are investigated. From a purely non-modal analysis point of view, polynomial orders between 22 and 44 with standard upwinding are well suited for under-resolved turbulence simulations. For lower polynomial orders, diffusion is introduced in scales that are much larger than the grid resolution. For higher polynomial orders, as well as for strong under/over-upwinding, robustness issues can be expected. The non-modal analysis results are then tested against under-resolved turbulence simulations of the Burgers, Euler and Navier-Stokes equations.
