    Russian Sophiology and the Philosophers of Will: The Theanthropic Theology of Solovyov and Bulgakov and their Critical Appropriation of German Voluntarism.

    This thesis explores potential theological contributions of Russian Sophiology. Its argument is twofold. First, it is argued that the Russian theologians’ development of the idea of God as eternal, divine-humanity in relation to Sophia enabled them to address both longstanding and contemporary theological problematics in bold and original ways. Second, it is argued that among the vastly diverse sources upon which Russian Sophiology drew, its critical reappropriation of elements of the German voluntarist tradition stands behind some of Sophiology’s most creative and controversial theological proposals. In order to demonstrate this twofold claim, this work is organized around the major systematic themes that form the Christian narrative of reality: Trinity-Christology, creation, fall, and eschatology. To limit our focus, the thought of Vladimir Solovyov and Sergius Bulgakov will be considered in relation to each of these themes, and the particular issues that attend them. It is argued that the theanthropic theology of divine-humanity is at work not only in their Christocentric redefinition of the Trinity, but also plays a critical role in the other theological loci surveyed. Furthermore, it will be argued that in each of these areas there is a critical appropriation of the voluntarist tradition, not only the sophiological theosophy of Jacob Boehme, but also the 19th century philosophers of Will: Friedrich Schelling, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Eduard von Hartmann. It is argued that the Russian theologians utilize this voluntarist legacy, particularly the metaphysical principle of an unconscious, impersonal, corporeal Will, not only in their development of the idea of God’s eternal divine-humanity, but also to explore the ultimate origins of matter and becoming, the nature of the fall and its connection to the evolutionary process, and the eschatological spiritualization of matter

    The rapid growth of demanding applications in domains applying multimedia processing and machine learning has marked a new era for edge and cloud computing. These applications involve massive data and compute-intensive tasks, and thus, typical computing paradigms in embedded systems and data centers are stressed to meet the worldwide demand for high performance. Concurrently, the landscape of the semiconductor field in the last 15 years has constituted power as a first-class design concern. As a result, the community of computing systems is forced to find alternative design approaches to facilitate high-performance and/or power-efficient computing. Among the examined solutions, Approximate Computing has attracted an ever-increasing interest, with research works applying approximations across the entire traditional computing stack, i.e., at software, hardware, and architectural levels. Over the last decade, there is a plethora of approximation techniques in software (programs, frameworks, compilers, runtimes, languages), hardware (circuits, accelerators), and architectures (processors, memories). The current article is Part I of our comprehensive survey on Approximate Computing, and it reviews its motivation, terminology and principles, as well it classifies and presents the technical details of the state-of-the-art software and hardware approximation techniques.Comment: Under Review at ACM Computing Survey

    Art and design learning journey: interactions between learners and materials

    This thesis is an empirical explorative and new materialist qualitative research journey representing a secondary school art and design teacher’s awakening to the importance and vitality of art education to young learners with regards to their own intrinsic learning journey and their subsequent wider outlook on life. Secondary education and specifically art education is vulnerable and prone to political whims, lack of interest and shifts of policy since 1768 and the founding of the Royal Academy. The historical and political lineage of art and design education is outlined along with the lasting impact of language used within more recent statutory documentation. Little research currently exists that specifically looks at what is generated within the processes of making and doing that are intrinsic to creative activity and are lived out in every art and design classroom environment. Within this thesis I will explore the rich potential for haptic and tacit knowledge to be generated within the creative process, driven by heuristic experiences. I will also highlight the generation of powerful emotional relationships generated between human and non-human actants which occur as students engage with making and doing within the art classroom. Through working directly with different creative processes and materials, including research, poetry, design, and ceramics, two classes of year 9 students explored both collaboratively and individually the value of making and responding to both their own learning experience and that of working with others. The physicist and academic Karen Barad offers a novel platform of diffractive analysis with which to interpret the research project data in order to challenge the accepted positionality of merely working through a creative process in a procedural way. Diffractive analysis is also central in the analysis of the intra-actions between human and nonhuman actants opening up further discussions challenging established hierarchy and status quo presently found in secondary education.     A review of technical factors to consider when designing neural networks for semantic segmentation of Earth Observation imagery

    Semantic segmentation (classification) of Earth Observation imagery is a crucial task in remote sensing. This paper presents a comprehensive review of technical factors to consider when designing neural networks for this purpose. The review focuses on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), and transformer models, discussing prominent design patterns for these ANN families and their implications for semantic segmentation. Common pre-processing techniques for ensuring optimal data preparation are also covered. These include methods for image normalization and chipping, as well as strategies for addressing data imbalance in training samples, and techniques for overcoming limited data, including augmentation techniques, transfer learning, and domain adaptation. By encompassing both the technical aspects of neural network design and the data-related considerations, this review provides researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the factors involved in designing effective neural networks for semantic segmentation of Earth Observation imagery.Comment: 145 pages with 32 figure

    Exploring new avenues for the meta-analysis method in personality and social psychology research

    This dissertation addresses theoretical validity and bias in meta-analytic research in personality and social psychology research. The conceptual starting point of the dissertation is research on ego depletion (Baumeister et al., 1998). In this line of research, hundreds of studies documented an experimental effect that probably does not exist, as was later revealed by extensive replication work (Hagger et al., 2010, 2016). This debacle has presumably been caused by dysfunctional structures and procedures in psychological science, such as widespread publication bias (Carter & McCullough, 2014). Unfortunately, these dysfunctionalities were (and in some cases still are) also prevalent in other areas of psychological research beside ego depletion (Ferguson & Brannick, 2012; Open Science Collaboration, 2015). Because extensive replication research is too costly to be repeated for all past work, it has been a contentious question what to do with research data that has been generated during an era of questionable research practices: should this research be abandoned or can some of it be salvaged? In four research papers, this dissertation project attempts to address these questions. In part I of the dissertation project, two papers highlight and analyze challenges when summarizing past research in social psychology and personality research. Paper 1 (Friese et al., 2017) attempted to find summary evidence for the effectiveness of self-control training, a research field related to ego depletion, but came to a sobering conclusion: The summary effect was small, likely inflated by publication bias, and could not be attributed beyond doubt to a theoretical mechanism. Paper 2 (Friese & Frankenbach, 2020) reported on a simulation study that showed how multiple sources of bias (publication bias, p-hacking) can interact with contextual factors and each other to create significant meta-analytic evidence from very small or even zero true effects. Part II of the dissertation project is an attempt to advance social-psychological and personality theory with meta-scientific work despite an unknowable risk of bias in the literature. In part II, two papers (Frankenbach et al., 2020, 2022) make use of one key idea: Re-using existing raw research data to test novel theoretical ideas in secondary (meta-)analyses. Results revealed that this idea helps towards both goals of the dissertation project, that is, advancing theory while reducing risk-of-bias. The general discussion analyses promises and limitations of such secondary data analyses in more detail and attempts to situate the idea more broadly in the psychological research toolkit by contrasting integrative versus innovative research. Further discussion covers how conceptual and technological innovations may facilitate more secondary data analyses in the future, and how such advances may pave the way for a slower, more incremental, but truly valid and cumulative psychological science.Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt theoretischen ValiditĂ€t und Verzerrung (Bias) von meta-analytischer Forschung in der Persönlichkeits- und Sozialpsychologie. Der konzeptuelle Ausgangspunkt der Dissertation ist die Forschung zu „Ego Depletion“ (Baumeister et al., 1998). In dieser Forschungslinie haben hunderte von Studien einen Effekt belegt, der, wie sich spĂ€ter durch umfangreiche Replikationsarbeiten (Hagger et al., 2010, 2016) herausstellte, vermutlich nicht existiert. Dieses Debakel wurde mutmaßlich mitverursacht durch dysfunktionale Strukturen und Prozesse in der psychologischen Forschung, insbesondere Publikationsbias („publication bias“). UnglĂŒcklicherweise lagen (und liegen) diese DysfunktionalitĂ€ten neben Ego Depletion auch in anderen psychologischen Forschungsbereichen vor (Ferguson & Brannick, 2012; Open Science Collaboration, 2015).     Public sector accounting and financial management in the context of a developing country: an empirical study of the Volta River Authority in Ghana

    Using the Volta River Authority, a major Ghanaian corporation responsible for the generation and distribution of electricity in Ghana and neighbouring countries, as a case study, this thesis seeks to gain an empirical understanding of the nature and effectiveness of accounting and financial management systems in the context of a public sector organisation in a developing country. The principal rationale of the thesis is an attempt to substantiate and illuminate major issues and concerns about the nature of accounting and financial management systems in public sector organisations of developing countries today. The thesis problematises an overly simple view that developing countries have deficient accounting and financial management systems in their public sector organisations. The methodological, epistemological, and ontological orientations of the thesis are consistent with what Chua (1986) labels the “interpretive” paradigm. A recognition of multiple realities in the functioning of accounting enables an exploration of the claim that developing countries have deficient public sector accounting and financial management systems in a three-dimensional fashion. Firstly, the perceptions of organisational actors are drawn upon to aid evaluation of the basic deficiency claim. The research at this level emphasizes the technical-rational view of accounting as a tool for control over organisational financial resources. Thick descriptions of the systems for managing financial resources (including planning, budgeting, pricing, extent of computerisation, financial reporting and audit practices) of the VRA are gathered from organisational actors together with perceptions of the accounting and financial management systems by external constituencies such as the World Bank and the Authority’s multinational audit firms as a basis for evaluating the deficiency claim in the context of the VRA. Secondly, the thesis draws upon social theory (the view of organisations as negotiated orders) to further interpret the deficiency claim by bringing into the analysis the socio-historical circumstances of the organisation and how they help to provide insights into how the systems for financial resource management arise at the VRA. At this level of analysis, the thesis provides an interpretive construction of the technical procedures for financial resource management against the backdrop of the institutional setting within which the Authority conducts its operations. To this end, the influence of external constituencies such as the World Bank and the Volta Aluminium Company (VRA’s major customer) on the Authority’s accounting and financial management systems are explored. Thirdly, the thesis evaluates the effectiveness of the Authority’s accounting and financial management systems with reference to the extent to which they assist in the accomplishment of the principal rationale for establishing the organisation (i.e. socio-economic development of Ghana). At the third level of analysis, the Brundtland Commission’s notion of sustainable development is drawn upon as an alternative to the dominant economistic notion of development to provide a benchmark for the analysis. Employing the Commission’s perspective, the thesis attempts to understand the extent to which VRA’s systems of financial resource management reflect the notion of people-centredness and environmental awareness (i.e. the two major strands of the Commission’s notion of sustainable development). Multiple methods, including interviews, observation, document analysis and survey are employed to collect empirical evidence for this study. The major conclusions of the study are that from a technical-rational perspective, the claim that developing countries generally have deficient public sector accounting and financial management systems could not be established in the context of the VRA. This conclusion derived from the overwhelming positive perception of the Authority’s financial resource management systems by organisational actors, international funding agencies such as the World Bank, and the Authority’s multinational accounting/audit firms. Indeed, the claims about the lack of published annual accounts, inadequate information for managerial decision making, poor budgetary practices, and lack of independent auditors in developing country public sector contexts could not be supported in the case of the VRA. However, by going behind the technical procedures (façade) to uncover the forces which explain how the systems arise, the thesis argued that the deficiency claim might be supported in another sense; a sense which appreciates and problematises the socio-historical and institutional setting which are strongly responsible not only for the nature of the Authority’s current systems but how they have changed over time. In particular, the thesis argues that the systems of financial resource management are constructed partly to legitimise outcomes of prior negotiations between the Authority and its external constituencies. The constraints presented by these prior agreements and contracts render some of the Authority’s systems of financial resource management inconsistent with explanations grounded in conventional accounting and financial management logic. The thesis also finds, however, that some of the inadequacies observed with VRA’s systems of financial resource management reflected general limitations of conventional accounting with its over-emphasis on the entity concept rather than a peculiar organisational or even developing country problem. By employing an interpretive methodological approach to gain an understanding of the nature and effectiveness of accounting in a third world public sector organisational context, this thesis illuminates hitherto relatively unappreciated issues, including furthering an appreciation of accounting as a socio-political artefact in this context, and thus contributes to the critical and interpretive accounting literature

    Accounting in action in the New Zealand health reform process: an analysis informed by a specific case study of a major health provider

    This thesis constitutes an empirical study of accounting in action, focussing attention on patient based cost systems. The thesis contributes an in depth understanding of the mobilisation of casemix and related information systems at a large regional hospital, Health Waikato (HW), in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. The field research consisted of primarily unstructured and semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. I present the research in the later part of the thesis from a constructionist, interpretive perspective. This consists of richly descriptive case studies of aspects of the change process as it has impacted upon the research site. The themes of the analysis are related, at the macro level, to the resurrection of neoclassical economics policies and the relative ascendancy of free market solutions. The process through which areas of knowledge and in this case particularly public policy become problematised is explicated. My research attempts to describe the experiences and perceptions of medical and managerial\financial staff at a work unit level within a single hospital. A part of this process has involved investigation of the implementation of traditional accounting technologies in unfamiliar environments. The research is primarily concerned to elaborate upon the social context of accounting systems implementation using theoretical insights derived from Latour (particularly: 1987, 1993). The research has sought to explicate the change process as a process of translation. Traditional accounting techniques have been explicated as “black box” technology with which the organisation has been redefined in economic terms. In the study, the power of accounting in the translation and inscription of data (the fabrication of accounting systems per Preston et al, 1992), is central to understanding the role of accounting systems as technology. Drawing from the work of Latour helps to provide a frame of reference to allow an assimilation of disparate changes and influences as they have come to affect the health sector at a national level, within New Zealand, and also at an organisational level, within a large regional health provider. The research contributes in explicating the relevance of Latour’s rules of method, and underlying theoretical framework for an organisational analysis focusing upon accounting. Latour uses a very general conception of technology which encompasses anything emerging from what he terms the process of “translation”. In this context Latour uses the term to refer to the production or “fabrication” of “quasi-objects”. This is most easily seen as consisting of the physical objects which “populate our western societies”, but for Latour also includes inscriptions and “facts/artefacts”. I regard accounting and information systems as consisting of mixtures (or perhaps “collectives”) of technological quasi-objects in this very general sense. The focus of the research has been upon the identification of problems, the choice of accounting techniques and their implementation. Together with other devices the use of accounting techniques may be seen as a central part of the process through which change is made acceptable within the organisation. Supporters are enrolled into the change process in part by being exposed to the accounting inscriptions which are used to represent the cost and profit “reality” of their unit and the whole organisation. The research process has involved detailed investigation on a case by case basis to enable a thorough description of the accounting techniques being put in place. The title of the thesis is based on Latour (1987) "Science in Action". Conventions developed in Actor Network Theory might suggest my title would be better understood as "Accounting as Actant" but it seems to me that Latour was clearly aware of this same point when he chose this title for his book

    Ludology as a theoretical lens for interactive works: Demonstrating the theoretical gaps in copyright analysis of interactive works

    This research argues that without the appropriate category or lexicon to address interactive creations and with their assessment by analogy, interactive creations are improperly protected by copyright. They are over-under protected, their infringement decisions incoherent, inconsistent, and are protected in ways which entirely overlook their distinct and unique characteristics as an expressive medium. Drawing the boundaries of protection already proves difficult for copyright, owing to flaws and shortcomings with its principles and subject matter categorization. Which in part is why copyright struggles to protect interactive creations. However, it is contended that interactive creations present further difficulties which emerge by virtue of their interactivity. It is argued that this interactivity leads them to present significant practical and conceptual questions which copyright is ill equipped to answer. And whilst the existing academic commentary does highlight the challenges facing interactive creations, it does not do so in a way that meaningfully or specifically addresses interactive creations as a distinct medium, nor does it consider their unique qualities. To that end, this thesis argues that video game scholarship presents a helpful foundation for understanding how a more accurate ontology for interactive works might be constructed. It is contended that video game studies and ludology, can provide insights on what these neglected qualities are, as well as potential frameworks and vocabulary for more appropriately understanding and structuring these concepts. Arguing that ludology and the concepts proposed by the ludologist Frasca provide a clearer analytical lens for assessing the distinct and novel expressive capabilities of the medium.     Mass spectral imaging of clinical samples using deep learning

    A better interpretation of tumour heterogeneity and variability is vital for the improvement of novel diagnostic techniques and personalized cancer treatments. Tumour tissue heterogeneity is characterized by biochemical heterogeneity, which can be investigated by unsupervised metabolomics. Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) combined with Machine Learning techniques have generated increasing interest as analytical and diagnostic tools for the analysis of spatial molecular patterns in tissue samples. Considering the high complexity of data produced by the application of MSI, which can consist of many thousands of spectral peaks, statistical analysis and in particular machine learning and deep learning have been investigated as novel approaches to deduce the relationships between the measured molecular patterns and the local structural and biological properties of the tissues. Machine learning have historically been divided into two main categories: Supervised and Unsupervised learning. In MSI, supervised learning methods may be used to segment tissues into histologically relevant areas e.g. the classification of tissue regions in H&E (Haemotoxylin and Eosin) stained samples. Initial classification by an expert histopathologist, through visual inspection enables the development of univariate or multivariate models, based on tissue regions that have significantly up/down-regulated ions. However, complex data may result in underdetermined models, and alternative methods that can cope with high dimensionality and noisy data are required. Here, we describe, apply, and test a novel diagnostic procedure built using a combination of MSI and deep learning with the objective of delineating and identifying biochemical differences between cancerous and non-cancerous tissue in metastatic liver cancer and epithelial ovarian cancer. The workflow investigates the robustness of single (1D) to multidimensional (3D) tumour analyses and also highlights possible biomarkers which are not accessible from classical visual analysis of the H&E images. The identification of key molecular markers may provide a deeper understanding of tumour heterogeneity and potential targets for intervention.Open Acces
