Impact damage of composite plates
A simple model to study low velocity transverse impact of thin plates made of fiber-reinforced composite material, in particular T300/5208 graphite-epoxy was discussed. This model predicts the coefficient of restitution, which is a measure of the energy absorbed by the target during an impact event. The model is constructed on the assumption that the plate is inextensible in the fiber direction and that the material is incompressible in the z-direction. Such a plate essentially deforms by shear, hence this model neglects bending deformations of the plate. The coefficient of restitution is predicted to increase with large interlaminar shear strength and low transverse shear modulus of the laminate. Predictions are compared with the test results of impacted circular and rectangular clamped plates. Experimentally measured values of the coefficient of restitution are found to agree with the predicted values within a reasonable error
Significance of low energy impact damage on modal parameters of composite beams by design of experiments
This paper presents an experimental study on the effects of multi-site damage on the vibration response of composite beams damaged by low energy impacts around the barely visible impact damage limit (BVID). The variation of the modal parameters with different levels of impact energy and density of damage is studied. Vibration tests have been carried out with both burst random and classical sine dwell excitations in order to compare that which of the methods among Polymax and Half Bandwidth Method is more suitable for damping estimation in the presence of damage. Design of experiments (DOE) performed on the experimental data show that natural frequency is a more sensitive parameter for damage detection than the damping ratio. It also highlighted energy of impact as the factor having a more significant effect on the modal parameters. Half Bandwidth Method is found to be unsuitable for damping estimation in the presence of damage
Failure analysis of CFRP laminates subjected to Compression After Impact: FE simulation using discrete interface elements
This paper presents a model for the numerical simulation of impact damage, permanent indentation and compression after impact (CAI) in CFRP laminates. The same model is used for the formation of damage developing during both low-velocity / low-energy impact tests and CAI tests. The different impact and CAI elementary damage types are taken into account, i.e. matrix cracking, fiber failure and interface delamination. Experimental tests and model results are compared, and this comparison is used to highlight the laminate failure scenario during residual compression tests. Finally, the impact energy effect on the residual strength is evaluated and compared to experimental results
Instantaneous baseline damage localisation using sensor mapping
In this paper an instantaneously recorded baseline method is proposed using piezoelectric transducers for damage localisation under varying temperature. This method eliminates need for baselines required when operating at different temper- atures by mapping a baseline area onto the interrogation area. Instantaneously recorded baselines and current interrogation signals are calibrated based on the sensor mapping. This allows extraction of damage scatter signal which is used to localise damage. The proposed method is used to localise actual impact damage on a composite plate under varying temperatures. The method is also applied to a stiffened fuselage panel to accurately localise impact damage
Low velocity impact modeling in composite laminates capturing permanent indentation
This paper deals with impact damage and permanent indentation modeling. A numerical model has been elaborated in order to simulate the different impact damage types developing during low velocity/low energy impact. The three current damage types: matrix cracking, fiber failure and delamination, are simulated. Inter-laminar damage, i.e. interface delamination, is conventionally simulated using interface elements based on fracture mechanics. Intra-laminar damage, i.e. matrix cracks, is simulated using interface elements based on failure criterion. Fiber failure is simulated using degradation in the volume elements. The originality of this model is to simulate permanent indentation after impact with a ‘‘plastic-like’’model introduced in the matrix cracking elements. This model type is based on experimental observations showing matrix cracking debris which block crack closure. Lastly, experimental validation is performed, which demonstrates the model’s satisfactory relevance in simulating impact damage. This acceptable match between experiment and modeling confirms the interest of the novel approach proposed in this paper to describe the physics behind permanent indentation
Experimental analysis of damage creation and permanent indentation on highly oriented plates
This paper presents an experimental investigation concerning low-velocity impact and quasi-static indentation tests on highly oriented laminates used in aeronautical and aerospace applications. The damage observed in such laminates is very particular. Post mortem analysis were carried out which helped to define an impact damage scenario. Microscopic observations led to explain the mechanism of permanent indentation formation which is a fundamental point of damage tolerance justification. Equivalence between static and dynamic is also discussed
Improved impact performance of marine sandwich panels using through-thickness reinforcement: Experimental results
This paper presents results from a test developed to simulate the water impact
(slamming) loading of sandwich boat structures. A weighted elastomer ball is
dropped from increasing heights onto rigidly supported panels until damage is
detected. Results from this test indicate that honeycomb core sandwich panels,
the most widely used material for racing yacht hulls, start to damage due to
core crushing at impact energies around 550 J. Sandwich panels of the same areal
weight and with the same carbon/epoxy facings but using a novel foam core
reinforced in the thickness direction with pultruded carbon fibre pins, do not
show signs of damage until above 1200 J impact energy. This suggests that these
will offer significantly improved resistance to wave impact. Quasi-static test
results cannot be used to predict impact resistance here as the crush strength
of the pinned foam is more sensitive to loading rate than that of the honeycomb
core
Monitoring the effects of impact damages on modal parameters in carbon fiber entangled sandwich beams
The aim is to study the impact toughness of two types of entangled sandwich materials (heavy and light) with the help of vibration testing. A simple case of symmetrical impacts is studied in this article as no literature is available regarding impact tests on entangled sandwich materials. The variation of modal parameters with two levels of damage (BVID and Damage not apparent on the surface) is studied. Vibration test results show that the light entangled specimens possessing good damping capabilities seem more sensitive to impact damage than the heavy ones. Furthermore, damping is found to be more sensitive to damage than the stiffness variations, so it is reasonable to assume that damping may be used instead of natural frequency as a damage indicator tool for structural health monitoring purposes
The effect of resin on the impact damage tolerance of graphite-epoxy laminates
The effect of the matrix resin on the impact damage tolerance of graphite-epoxy composite laminates was investigated. The materials were evaluated on the basis of the damage incurred due to local impact and on their ability to retain compression strength in the presence of impact damage. Twenty-four different resin systems were evaluated. Five of the systems demonstrated substantial improvements compared to the baseline system including retention of compression strength in the presence of impact damage. Examination of the neat resin mechanical properties indicates the resin tensile properties influence significantly the laminate damage tolerance and that improvements in laminate damage tolerance are not necessarily made at the expense of room temperature mechanical properties. Preliminary results indicate a resin volume fraction on the order of 40 percent or greater may be required to permit the plastic flow between fibers necessary for improved damage tolerance
Correlating low energy impact damage with changes in modal parameters: diagnosis tools and FE validation
This paper presents a basic experimental technique and simplified FE based models for the detection, localization and quantification of impact damage in composite beams around the BVID level. Detection of damage is carried out by shift in modal parameters. Localization of damage is done by a topology optimization tool which showed that correct damage locations can be found rather efficiently for low-level damage. The novelty of this paper is that we develop an All In One (AIO) package dedicated to impact identification by modal analysis. The damaged zones in the FE models are updated by reducing the most sensitive material property in order to improve the experimental/numerical correlation of the frequency
response functions. These approximate damage models(in term of equivalent rigidity) give us a simple degradation factor that can serve as a warning regarding structure safety
