Image Similarity Metrics in Image Registration
Measures of image similarity that inspect the intensity probability distribution of the images have proved extremely popular in image registration applications. The joint entropy of the intensity distributions and the marginal entropies of the individual images are combined to produce properties such as resistance to loss of information in one image and invariance to changes in image overlap during registration. However information theoretic cost functions are largely used empirically. This work attempts to describe image similarity measures within a formal mathematical metric framework. Redefining mutual information as a metric is shown to lead naturally to the standardised variant, normalised mutual information

An optical image is projected onto a planar surface of a photocathode that derives an electron beam replica of the image. A target electrode displaced relative to the photocathode so that it does not obstruct the optical image includes a planar surface for receiving and deriving an accurate replica of the electron beam image. The two planar surfaces are parallel. The electron beam image is focused on the target electrode by providing throughout a region that extends between the planar surfaces of the photocathode and receiving electrode, constant homogeneous dc electric and magnetic fields. The electric field extends in a direction perpendicular to the planar surfaces while the magnetic field extends along a straight line that intersects the photocathode and target electrode at an acute angle
The body as image: image as body
Pain consultations are often contested spaces where patient and clinician compete for the roles of speaker. Often patients are searching for mechanical explanations and clinicians for psychological ones - creating an impasse and causing distress to both parties. Meanwhile, as technology advances and we have increasing means of seeing inside a person’s body we seem to have less and less ability to see inside another’s world – to understand what it means to live with pain, the significance of that pain for that individual in their social context. In this paper we explore the potential for images of pain, co-created with patients, to intervene in this unproductive patient dynamic and bring the full experience of pain - social, emotional, physical - into focus. Narrative analysis is used on a series of transcripts of pain consultations
Image-to-Image Translation with Conditional Adversarial Networks
We investigate conditional adversarial networks as a general-purpose solution
to image-to-image translation problems. These networks not only learn the
mapping from input image to output image, but also learn a loss function to
train this mapping. This makes it possible to apply the same generic approach
to problems that traditionally would require very different loss formulations.
We demonstrate that this approach is effective at synthesizing photos from
label maps, reconstructing objects from edge maps, and colorizing images, among
other tasks. Indeed, since the release of the pix2pix software associated with
this paper, a large number of internet users (many of them artists) have posted
their own experiments with our system, further demonstrating its wide
applicability and ease of adoption without the need for parameter tweaking. As
a community, we no longer hand-engineer our mapping functions, and this work
suggests we can achieve reasonable results without hand-engineering our loss
