    Packet loss characteristics of IPTV-like traffic on residential links

    Packet loss is one of the principal threats to quality of experience for IPTV systems. However, the packet loss characteristics of the residential access networks which carry IPTV are not widely understood. We present packet level measurements of streaming IPTV-like traffic over four residential access links, and describe the extent and nature of packet loss we encountered. We discuss the likely impact of these losses for IPTV traffic, and outline steps which can ameliorate this

    Characterization of P2P IPTV Traffic: Scaling Analysis

    P2P IPTV applications arise on the Internet and will be massively used in the future. It is expected that P2P IPTV will contribute to increase the overall Internet traffic. In this context, it is important to measure the impact of P2P IPTV on the networks and to characterize this traffic. Dur- ing the 2006 FIFA World Cup, we performed an extensive measurement campaign. We measured network traffic generated by broadcasting soc- cer games by the most popular P2P IPTV applications, namely PPLive, PPStream, SOPCast and TVAnts. From the collected data, we charac- terized the P2P IPTV traffic structure at different time scales by using wavelet based transform method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work, which presents a complete multiscale analysis of the P2P IPTV traffic. Our results show that the scaling properties of the TCP traffic present periodic behavior whereas the UDP traffic is stationary and lead to long- range depedency characteristics. For all the applications, the download traffic has different characteristics than the upload traffic. The signaling traffic has a significant impact on the download traffic but it has negligible impact on the upload.     Multi-User Interactive TV: the Next Step in Personalization

    In the past few years there has been an increasing trend towards personalization in the TV world. IMS-based IPTV is a good example of a highly personalized IPTV architecture, featuring an advanced identity management subsystem. This article studies a next step in the personalization of the television experience: concurrent use of TV services that are supported by the IMSbased IPTV system. That is, multiple users using the same television set at the same or at different times, where each user as personalized interaction with the service and content. Our analysis of IMS-based IPTV use cases shows that current architectures were not designed with concurrent use in mind. However, we demonstrate that the combination of concurrent use and personalized TV services can yield interesting and viable use cases in the areas of interactive game shows, personalized electronic program guides and channel lists, and other. Finally, an analysis of the IMS-based IPTV system and architecture shows that it has all the ingredients to implement these new concurrent TV use cases, and that the main challenges will be in the area of usability. The article concludes that personalization and concurrency are not contradictory for television services, neither from a use case perspective, nor technologically. In particular, the IMS-based IPTV system is able to facilitate an enhanced and personalized experience to concurrent TV users

    P2P IPTV Measurement: A Comparison Study

    With the success of P2P file sharing, new emerging P2P applications arise on the Internet for streaming content like voice (VoIP) or live video (IPTV). Nowadays, there are lots of works measuring P2P file sharing or P2P telephony systems, but there is still no comprehensive study about P2P IPTV, whereas it should be massively used in the future. During the last FIFA world cup, we measured network traffic generated by P2P IPTV applications like PPlive, PPstream, TVants and Sopcast. In this paper we analyze some of our results during the same games for the applications. We focus on traffic statistics and churn of peers within these P2P networks. Our objectives are threefold: we point out the traffic generated to understand the impact they will have on the network, we try to infer the mechanisms of such applications and highlight differences, and we give some insights about the users' behavior.Comment: 10 page

    Privacy-preserving targeted advertising scheme for IPTV using the cloud

    In this paper, we present a privacy-preserving scheme for targeted advertising via the Internet Protocol TV (IPTV). The scheme uses a communication model involving a collection of viewers/subscribers, a content provider (IPTV), an advertiser, and a cloud server. To provide high quality directed advertising service, the advertiser can utilize not only demographic information of subscribers, but also their watching habits. The latter includes watching history, preferences for IPTV content and watching rate, which are published on the cloud server periodically (e.g. weekly) along with anonymized demographics. Since the published data may leak sensitive information about subscribers, it is safeguarded using cryptographic techniques in addition to the anonymization of demographics. The techniques used by the advertiser, which can be manifested in its queries to the cloud, are considered (trade) secrets and therefore are protected as well. The cloud is oblivious to the published data, the queries of the advertiser as well as its own responses to these queries. Only a legitimate advertiser, endorsed with a so-called {\em trapdoor} by the IPTV, can query the cloud and utilize the query results. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated with experiments, which show that the scheme is suitable for practical usage
