Simulation of handling operations in marine container terminals for the purposes of a profession simulator

Marine container terminals play an irreplaceable role in modern logistics. They ensure the functioning of material flows and supply chains. Optimal and efficient operations of terminals are increasingly based on full or partial automation. As a result, the expertise and skill prerequisites for service personnel and managers are increasing. This paper presents an original idea of creating a "profession simulator". Its principle is based on the application of a dynamic computer simulation method. The results represent a generally valid concept for a "profession simulator" that can be calibrated for any container terminal. Within this concept, the inputs, outputs, and processes that take place in the profession simulator are defined. The simulation model is created with the Tecnomatix Plant Simulation program. Mathematical models are implemented for all individual processes in the simulation model. A programming method using the SimTalk 2.0 language is used for their implementation. The obtained results point to the possibility of using the profession simulator to analyze and monitor selected indicators regarding handling techniques, the utilization of maritime terminals, information about the number of transported containers, or the implementation of handling activities.Kultúrna a Edukacná Grantová Agentúra MŠVVaŠ SR, KEGA, (005TUKE-4/2022, 018TUKE-4/2022, APVV-21-0195, IGA/FLKŘ/2022/001, RVO/FLKŘ/2022/03)VEGA 1/0101/2

Emergencies in industrial warehouses are a major concern for firefghters. The large dimensions together with the development of dense smoke that drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges. The Guardians robot swarm is designed to assist fire fighters in searching a large warehouse. In this report we discuss the technology developed for a swarm of robots searching and assisting fire fighters. We explain the swarming algorithms which provide the functionality by which the robots react to and follow humans while no communication is required. Next we discuss the wireless communication system, which is a so-called mobile ad-hoc network. The communication network provides also one of the means to locate the robots and humans. Thus the robot swarm is able to locate itself and provide guidance information to the humans. Together with the re ghters we explored how the robot swarm should feed information back to the human fire fighter. We have designed and experimented with interfaces for presenting swarm based information to human beings

The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC

As technology advances, technical systems become increasingly complex not only in terms of functionality and structure but also regarding their handling and operation. In order to keep such complex safety-critical and mission-critical systems controllable, they are required to be highly dependable. Since the costs for designing, testing, operating, and maintaining such systems significantly increase with the dependability requirements, new design approaches for the cost effective development and production of dependable systems are required, covering hardware, software, and human factor aspects. This workshop aims at presenting and discussing the latest developments in this field, spanning the entire spectrum from theoretical works on system architecture and dependability measures to practical applications in safety and mission critical domains

    Contributions to Monte Carlo Search

This research is motivated by improving decision making under uncertainty and in particular for games and symbolic regression. The present dissertation gathers research contributions in the field of Monte Carlo Search. These contributions are focused around the selection, the simulation and the recommendation policies. Moreover, we develop a methodology to automatically generate an MCS algorithm for a given problem. For the selection policy, in most of the bandit literature, it is assumed that there is no structure or similarities between arms. Thus each arm is independent from one another. In several instances however, arms can be closely related. We show both theoretically and empirically, that a significant improvement over the state-of-the-art selection policies is possible. For the contribution on simulation policy, we focus on the symbolic regression problem and ponder on how to consistently generate different expressions by changing the probability to draw each symbol. We formalize the situation into an optimization problem and try different approaches. We show a clear improvement in the sampling process for any length. We further test the best approach by embedding it into a MCS algorithm and it still shows an improvement. For the contribution on recommendation policy, we study the most common in combination with selection policies. A good recommendation policy is a policy that works well with a given selection policy. We show that there is a trend that seems to favor a robust recommendation policy over a riskier one. We also present a contribution where we automatically generate several MCS algorithms from a list of core components upon which most MCS algorithms are built upon and compare them to generic algorithms. The results show that it often enables discovering new variants of MCS that significantly outperform generic MCS algorithms

    Entwurfskriterien feinwerktechnischer integrierter Sensor-Aktor-Systeme

    Get PDF
