EVM.net : an extensive tool for web content management
By the late 90’s Brazil experienced the “boom” of Internet although its use was restricted to the universities and large companies. On this context the Parliament of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Southern Brazil) has sponsored the development of a tool for publishing its contents. That tool should have some characteristics like be portable, “plug-and-play”. Responding to the demand has emerged EVM.net (acronym for modular virtual
structure on the Internet), a GPL integrated solution for publishing and managing web contents. EVM.net follows a distributed information architecture, each user is responsible for maintaining his contents. The system has been conceived to be scaleable: its architecture has been planned following the metaphor of a building. The foundations contain the security tools and the persistence model, while the other stages are customized for each demand. EVM.net also contains algorithms for query optimization and phonetic search for Brazilian Portuguese Recently the tool had been used to implement the Extensive Communication Model, which is based on interactivity, hypertextuality, and hypermediation. Currently, EVM.net is being used at many institutions like the University of Brasilia, the Federal Senate of Brazil and the Brasilia’s Federation of Industries
A transaction costs approach to financial assets rates of return
This paper expands on the extent of the gap between how academic teaching view market transactions and how the market professionals actually work, offering a sensible way of closing as much as possible such a gap. Firstly, transaction costs will be analysed from both the demand and supply sides of securities trading, featuring the essential role intermediaries usually performs. This analysis will lead us to a careful survey of the structure of the transaction costs function, bearing in mind that different users meet different cost items. Next, the concept and usage of differential rates will be set forth, distinguishing the stock from the flow differential rates, in the framework of an innovative approach inclusive of information sets. Afterwards, it is showed that transaction costs can be measured by rates which are differential ones by themselves. This addresses to an explicit transaction costs function, within a multiplicative model of differential rates. Besides, three simple lemmas are proved to give foundations to some statements included in the paper. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to illustrate algorithms and concepts.transaction costs; rates of return; differential rates; microstructure
Investigating the effects of odour integration in reading and learning experiences
Books are the tools used for reading novels and stories, but also for educational purposes. Conventional books have undergone a radical transformation in recent years due to the use of new technologies. However, even today the technological devices used for reading e-books are still poorly exploited, despite the fact that they represent a fundamental tool to make the reading experience more immersive by using a complete multisensory approach. In this perspective, one sense that represents an important element of human perception is the sense of smell. Consequently, authors make the hypothesis that the introduction of odours during reading sessions could increase the user experience and the learning performances. In order to demonstrate these hypotheses, the authors have defined and carried out several experimental testing sessions. The analysis of the collected data proved that the introduction of odour does not disturb the reader during reading activities but, on the contrary, can actually make the experience more immersive. Similarly, odours do not disturb studying activities, but they can instead increase the level of concentration and people's learning performance
Criminal persecution in Mexico and its influence on hypermediation: a case study
The high crime rate in Mexico contrasts with the few condemnatory sentences and in the violent reality of the country social networks become a scenario of virtual communities to find guilty. This research seeks to analyze the application of justice based on the social network Facebook in the detention of a university student accused of homicide because of his contacts with a victim of this crime, the legal scope that kept him imprisoned for more than a year, his emotional effects, in addition to establishing social movements that were initiated through the same social network demanding their release. The cross-sectional study of mixed methodology, for its realization is used the review of the file, the semi-structured interview and the web analysis of the page of support to the university that integrated 4679 post and gave origin to two manifestations that transferred the intangibility of the web, under the theory of social networks and virtual communities. Among the findings there were irregularities in the judicial process, the lack of response support for social demand through hyper mediation and the risks of using the network in the controversy over virtual communication and cyber-police before the few legal arguments that are required to exercise surveillance on the internet
Communication in a virtual environment: from the one-to-one model to the all-to-all model
The need to know and explain the human communication phenomena lead to the development of many theories and communication models that gradually evolved through time, in accordance with the cultural and sociopolitical contexts. In this article we will address the transformation from models that approached communication through a “one-to-all” logic, allowed by the spread of printed mass media or even radio and television, to a new communication process approach logic that can be resumed in the slogan “all-to-all”. In fact, with de beginning of the Internet and digital technologies, different ways
to communicate arise, since, as communication can now reach global amplitude, it favors multiple user connections, allowing for a multidirectional information flow model, or “all-to-all” model logic.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH/BD/60677/200

Media Ideologies: An Introduction
This volume began with the question: what analytical possibilities can scholarly
work on language ideologies offer the study of media? Studying media ideologies
is not new, but calling the metalanguage that emphasizes the technology or bodies
through which we communicate a “media ideology” is. By examining media ideologies,
the authors in this volume are building on previous ethnographies of how
people on the ground understand the ways the medium shapes the message (see
e.g., Barker 2008; Schieffelin 2000; Spitulnik 1998/1999). Media ideologies as a term
can sharpen a focus on how people understand both the communicative possibilities
and the material limitations of a specific channel, and how they conceive of
channels in general
The Human Capital “Impact” on E-Business: The Case of Encyclopedia Britannica
[Excerpt] The term “New Economy” has been coined to describe the remarkable economic performance of the 1990s. Stiroh, (1999) an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York observes that its defining characteristic is a “focus on increasing globalization and expanding information technology” (pg. 87). Research suggests that revenues from electronic based business to business trade will double over the next five years from 1.3 trillion in 2003. Revenues from business to consumer trade are predicted to rise from 108 billion over the same time period (Forrester Research, 1998). However, there is increasing attention to the challenges facing business in the new economy, and an increasing chorus of analysts suggesting how tenuous many of these business models really are. A recent Barron’s article showed that many dot-com companies have only days of remaining cash (Willoughby, March 20, 1999). Such a key emerging phenomenon has not escaped the attention of writers, though the existing body of writing has some important gaps. We would classify existing e-business literature into two groups. First, there is a growing body of literature that discusses the how the Internet is transforming business models and organizational strategies. A second, much smaller body of work has focused on e-HR, or more specifically, the implications of the Internet on various HR practices
Research on the development of the citizen journalism platform in Taiwan
With the rapid development of the Web 2.0, the citizen journalism, which advocates the citizen participation spirit, has been gradually introduced to Taiwan since 1990s. This theory provides a theoretical basis and the possibility for the public to change the chaos of the traditional journalism of Taiwan. Herein, more and more citizen journalism platforms have been developed since then. Based on t...学位:文学硕士院系专业:新闻传播学院_新闻学学号:1052013115304
Sports psychology in the English Premier League: ‘It feels precarious and is precarious’
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from SAGE Publications via the DOI in this record. This article gives a rare account of the working life of a sports psychologist in the
English Premier League (EPL), the elite division in English professional football. It
shows how members of emerging professions such as sports psychology are a new
precariat. Martin is more successful than many sports psychologists, but his job
security is dependent on his continued ability to navigate managerial change: using
his skills as a psychologist in the defence of his own employment but simultaneously
keeping the (potentially sensitive) ‘psychology’ label of the work he does hidden until
circumstances are propitious
