Updated results on atypical human trypanosomoses caused by animal trypanosomes
There are only two classical human forms of trypanosomoses, they are sleeping sickness in Africa (Trypanosoma brucei spp.) and Chagas' disease (T. cruzi) mainly in South America respectively. Other trypanosomes can infect a wide range of wild and domestic animals (fish, reptile, amphibians, mammals including cattle), but they are not supposed to be infective to human beings. However, several human cases infected by animal trypanosomes have been recently reported, in particular Trypanosoma lewisi (a Rattus trypanosome usually transmitted by fleas), and T. evansi (found for instance in cattle, camels, and mechanically transmitted by blood sucking insects such as tabanids or stomoxes). High density lipoprotein (HDL) in normal human serum (NHS) contains several compounds (e.g. ApoL-1) which protect us against African trypanosomes. The Indian patient infected with T. evansi reported in 2005 because of a genetic deletion was confirmed in the ApoL-1 gene in this patient, while another naturally T. evansi infected patient reported in Viet Nam in 2015 had a normal ApoL-1. The mode of transmission suspected in both cases was direct contamination via a wound while butchering raw beef. Both patients were cured successfully by using suramine, a drug for the acute form of sleeping sickness. Human infected with T. lewisi was mainly reported in babies. Although most of cases were transient infections, other required treatment or died. A recent case died from T. lewisi infection in India in 2015. It has been demonstrated that this parasite is resistant to NHS. Thus, T. lewisi is potentially a human pathogen or zoonotic pathogen. We present the new cases either described or suspected since the 2012, and previous cases as well (including infection by T. b. brucei, T. congolense). The problem of diagnosis and treatment will be considered, and the potential risk of emergence of a new zoonotic disease will be discussed
Concurrent Acquisition of a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in Diverse Influenza H5N1 Clade 2.2 Sub-clades
Highly pathogenic Influenza A H5N1 was first identified in Guangdong Province in 1996, followed by human cases in Hong Kong in 1997. The number of confirmed human cases now exceeds 300, and the associated Case Fatality Rate exceeds 60%. The genetic diversity of the serotype continues to increase. Four distinct clades or sub-clades have been linked to human cases. The gradual genetic changes identified in the sub-clades have been attributed to copy errors by viral encoded polymerases that lack an editing function, thereby resulting in antigenic drift. We report here the concurrent acquisition of the same polymorphism by multiple, genetically distinct, clade 2.2 sub-clades in Egypt, Russia, and Ghana. These changes are not easily explained by the current theory of “random mutation” through copy error, and are more easily explained by recombination with a common source. This conclusion is supported by additional polymorphisms shared by clade 2.2 isolates in Egypt and Germany

Human Infections with Plasmodium knowlesi, the Philippines.
Five human cases of infection with the simian malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi from Palawan, the Philippines, were confirmed by nested PCR. This study suggests that this zoonotic infection is found across a relatively wide area in Palawan and documents autochthonous cases in the country
Foot and Mouth Epidemic Reduces Cases of Human Cryptosporidiosis in Scotland.
In Scotland, rates of cryptosporidiosis infection in humans peak during the spring, a peak that is coincident with the peak in rates of infection in farm animals (during lambing and calving time). Here we show that, during the outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in 2001, there was a significant reduction in human cases of cryptosporidiosis infection in southern Scotland, where FMD was present, whereas, in the rest of Scotland, there was a reduction in cases that was not significant. We associate the reduction in human cases of cryptosporidiosis infection with the reduction in the number of young farm animals, together with restrictions on movement of both farm animals and humans, during the outbreak of FMD in 2001. We further show that, during 2002, there was recovery in the rate of cryptosporidiosis infection in humans throughout Scotland, particularly in the FMD-infected area, but that rates of infection remained lower, though not significantly, than pre-2001 levels
The Ripple Effect: Guantanamo Bay in the United Kingdom\u27s Courts
The human rights abuses suffered by detainees held at Guantánamo Bay have dominated many of the cases before the United Kingdom’s courts. The Human Rights Act of 1998, still relatively new to the statute book, played a central role in the detainees’ arguments. The ultimate court decisions, however, often relegate such factors to the background of the case. This article examines why the deciding courts declined to develop the law of diplomatic protection on the basis of human rights concerns, and why such arguments continue to be employed by detainees. Furthermore, the article assesses why the English courts have shown greater receptiveness to arguments similarly grounded in accusations of inhuman and degrading treatment in relation to later cases involving former detainees challenging the role of the British Government in their detention
Online fundraising in the human services
This paper examines emerging possibilities for use of the Internet in human service fundraising. Human service managers must compete for limited funds with their counterparts in educational, religious, health, and other nonprofit organizations. There is enormous potential for raising funds over the Internet; yet, this approach to resource development may not be appropriate or effective in some instances for certain human service agencies. The selection of fundraising approach must be consistent with the organizational context in which it is used. This paper provides examples of cases where use of the Internet may prove to be an effective method for human service fundraising. It also examines cases where use of the Internet may not be a good match for the organizational context, whether in terms of ethics or dollars raise
Behavioural Genetics in Criminal Cases: Past, Present and Future
Researchers studying human behavioral genetics have made significant scientific progress in enhancing our understanding of the relative contributions of genetics and the environment in observed variations in human behavior. Quickly outpacing the advances in the science are its applications in the criminal justice system. Already, human behavioral genetics research has been introduced in the U.S. criminal justice system, and its use will only become more prevalent. This essay discusses the recent historical use of behavioral genetics in criminal cases, recent advances in two gene variants of particular interest in the criminal law, MAOA and SLC6A4, the recent expert testimony on behalf of criminal defendants with respect to these two gene variants, and the future direction of behavioral genetics evidence in criminal cases
Litigating reproductive health rights in the inter-American system: what does a winning case look like?
Remedies and reparation measures emerging from the Inter-American System of Human Rights in reproductive health cases have consistently highlighted the need to develop and subsequently implement, non-repetition remedies that protect, promote and fulfill women’s reproductive health rights. Litigation outcomes that result in violations of reproductive rights are a “win” for health rights litigation, but when implementation fails, is a “win” still a win? Although there has been considerable success in litigating reproductive health rights cases, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights are not adequately equipped to follow-up on cases after they have been won. Successful and sustainable implementation of reproductive health rights law requires incorporation of non-repetition remedies in the form of legislation, education, and training that seeks to remodel existing social and cultural practices that hinder women’s enjoyment of their reproductive rights. In order for a reproductive health rights case to ultimately be a “winner,” case recommendations and decisions emerging from the Commission and Court must incorporate perspectives provided by members of civil society, with the ultimate goal of developing measurable remedies that address underlying obstacles to domestic implementation
