    Changing patterns of transition from school to university mathematics

    There has been widespread concern over the lack of preparedness of students making the transition from school to university mathematics and the changing profile of entrants to mathematical subjects in higher education has been well documented. In this paper, using documentary analysis and data from an informal case study, we argue the antecedents of this changed profile in the general shift across all subjects to a more utilitarian higher education, alongside the more specific changes in A-level mathematics provision which have been largely market driven. Our conclusions suggest that, ironically, changes put in place to make mathematics more widely useful may result in it losing just those features that make it marketable

    Effective theory approach to unstable particles

    We present a novel treatment of resonant massive particles appearing as intermediate states in high energy collisions. The approach uses effective field theory methods to treat consistently the instability of the intermediate resonant state. As a result gauge invariance is respected in every step and calculations can in principle be extended to all orders in perturbation theory, the only practical limitation in going to higher orders being the standard difficulties related to multi-loop integrals.     Bloom Filters in Adversarial Environments

    Many efficient data structures use randomness, allowing them to improve upon deterministic ones. Usually, their efficiency and correctness are analyzed using probabilistic tools under the assumption that the inputs and queries are independent of the internal randomness of the data structure. In this work, we consider data structures in a more robust model, which we call the adversarial model. Roughly speaking, this model allows an adversary to choose inputs and queries adaptively according to previous responses. Specifically, we consider a data structure known as "Bloom filter" and prove a tight connection between Bloom filters in this model and cryptography. A Bloom filter represents a set SS of elements approximately, by using fewer bits than a precise representation. The price for succinctness is allowing some errors: for any xSx \in S it should always answer `Yes', and for any xSx \notin S it should answer `Yes' only with small probability. In the adversarial model, we consider both efficient adversaries (that run in polynomial time) and computationally unbounded adversaries that are only bounded in the number of queries they can make. For computationally bounded adversaries, we show that non-trivial (memory-wise) Bloom filters exist if and only if one-way functions exist. For unbounded adversaries we show that there exists a Bloom filter for sets of size nn and error ε\varepsilon, that is secure against tt queries and uses only O(nlog1ε+t)O(n \log{\frac{1}{\varepsilon}}+t) bits of memory. In comparison, nlog1εn\log{\frac{1}{\varepsilon}} is the best possible under a non-adaptive adversary

    On correlation functions of operators dual to classical spinning string states

    We explore how to compute, classically at strong coupling, correlation functions of local operators corresponding to classical spinning string states. The picture we obtain is of `fattened' Witten diagrams, the evaluation of which turns out to be surprisingly subtle and requires a modification of the naive classical action due to a necessary projection onto appropriate wave functions. We examine string solutions which compute the simplest case of a two-point function and reproduce the right scaling with the anomalous dimensions corresponding to the energies of the associated spinning string solutions. We also describe, under some simplifying assumptions, how the spacetime dependence of a conformal three-point correlation function arises in this setup.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures; v2: references and comments added

    Statistically motivated example-based machine translation using translation memory

    In this paper we present a novel way of integrating Translation Memory into an Example-based Machine translation System (EBMT) to deal with the issue of low resources. We have used a dialogue of 380 sentences as the example-base for our system. The translation units in the Translation Memories are automatically extracted based on the aligned phrases (words) of a statistical machine translation (SMT) system. We attempt to use the approach to improve translation from English to Bangla as many statistical machine translation systems have difficulty with such small amounts of training data. We have found the approach shows improvement over a baseline SMT system
