Overlapping Multi-hop Clustering for Wireless Sensor Networks
Clustering is a standard approach for achieving efficient and scalable
performance in wireless sensor networks. Traditionally, clustering algorithms
aim at generating a number of disjoint clusters that satisfy some criteria. In
this paper, we formulate a novel clustering problem that aims at generating
overlapping multi-hop clusters. Overlapping clusters are useful in many sensor
network applications, including inter-cluster routing, node localization, and
time synchronization protocols. We also propose a randomized, distributed
multi-hop clustering algorithm (KOCA) for solving the overlapping clustering
problem. KOCA aims at generating connected overlapping clusters that cover the
entire sensor network with a specific average overlapping degree. Through
analysis and simulation experiments we show how to select the different values
of the parameters to achieve the clustering process objectives. Moreover, the
results show that KOCA produces approximately equal-sized clusters, which
allows distributing the load evenly over different clusters. In addition, KOCA
is scalable; the clustering formation terminates in a constant time regardless
of the network size
Robust Localization from Incomplete Local Information
We consider the problem of localizing wireless devices in an ad-hoc network
embedded in a d-dimensional Euclidean space. Obtaining a good estimation of
where wireless devices are located is crucial in wireless network applications
including environment monitoring, geographic routing and topology control. When
the positions of the devices are unknown and only local distance information is
given, we need to infer the positions from these local distance measurements.
This problem is particularly challenging when we only have access to
measurements that have limited accuracy and are incomplete. We consider the
extreme case of this limitation on the available information, namely only the
connectivity information is available, i.e., we only know whether a pair of
nodes is within a fixed detection range of each other or not, and no
information is known about how far apart they are. Further, to account for
detection failures, we assume that even if a pair of devices is within the
detection range, it fails to detect the presence of one another with some
probability and this probability of failure depends on how far apart those
devices are. Given this limited information, we investigate the performance of
a centralized positioning algorithm MDS-MAP introduced by Shang et al., and a
distributed positioning algorithm, introduced by Savarese et al., called
HOP-TERRAIN. In particular, for a network consisting of n devices positioned
randomly, we provide a bound on the resulting error for both algorithms. We
show that the error is bounded, decreasing at a rate that is proportional to
R/Rc, where Rc is the critical detection range when the resulting random
network starts to be connected, and R is the detection range of each device.Comment: 40 pages, 13 figure
A performance model of communication in the quarc NoC
Networks on-chip (NoC) emerged as a promising communication medium for future MPSoC development. To serve this purpose, the NoCs have to be able to efficiently exchange all types of traffic including the collective communications at a reasonable cost. The Quarc NoC is introduced as a NOC which is highly efficient in performing collective communication operations such as broadcast and multicast. This paper presents an introduction to the Quarc scheme and an analytical model to compute the average message latency in the architecture. To validate the model we compare the model latency prediction against the results obtained from discrete-event simulations
Quarc: a high-efficiency network on-chip architecture
The novel Quarc NoC architecture, inspired by the Spidergon scheme is introduced as a NoC architecture that is highly efficient in performing collective communication operations including broadcast and multicast. The efficiency of the Quarc architecture is achieved through balancing the traffic which is the result of the modifications applied to the topology and the routing elements of the Spidergon NoC. This paper provides an ASIC implementation of both architectures using UMCpsilas 0.13 mum CMOS technology and demonstrates an analysis and comparison of the cost and performance between the Quarc and the Spidergon NoCs
Two-Hop Connectivity to the Roadside in a VANET Under the Random Connection Model
We compute the expected number of cars that have at least one two-hop path to
a fixed roadside unit in a one-dimensional vehicular ad hoc network in which
other cars can be used as relays to reach a roadside unit when they do not have
a reliable direct link. The pairwise channels between cars experience Rayleigh
fading in the random connection model, and so exist, with probability function
of the mutual distance between the cars, or between the cars and the roadside
unit. We derive exact equivalents for this expected number of cars when the car
density tends to zero and to infinity, and determine its behaviour using
an infinite oscillating power series in , which is accurate for all
regimes. We also corroborate those findings to a realistic situation, using
snapshots of actual traffic data. Finally, a normal approximation is discussed
for the probability mass function of the number of cars with a two-hop
connection to the origin. The probability mass function appears to be well
fitted by a Gaussian approximation with mean equal to the expected number of

Quarc: a novel network-on-chip architecture
This paper introduces the Quarc NoC, a novel NoC architecture inspired by the Spidergon NoC. The Quarc scheme significantly outperforms the Spidergon NoC through balancing the traffic which is the result of the modifications applied to the topology and the routing elements.The proposed architecture is highly efficient in performing collective communication operations including broadcast and multicast. We present the topology, routing discipline and switch architecture for the Quarc NoC and demonstrate the performance with the results obtained from discrete event simulations
Exploiting Device-to-Device Communications to Enhance Spatial Reuse for Popular Content Downloading in Directional mmWave Small Cells
With the explosive growth of mobile demand, small cells in millimeter wave
(mmWave) bands underlying the macrocell networks have attracted intense
interest from both academia and industry. MmWave communications in the 60 GHz
band are able to utilize the huge unlicensed bandwidth to provide multiple Gbps
transmission rates. In this case, device-to-device (D2D) communications in
mmWave bands should be fully exploited due to no interference with the
macrocell networks and higher achievable transmission rates. In addition, due
to less interference by directional transmission, multiple links including D2D
links can be scheduled for concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse). With the
popularity of content-based mobile applications, popular content downloading in
the small cells needs to be optimized to improve network performance and
enhance user experience. In this paper, we develop an efficient scheduling
scheme for popular content downloading in mmWave small cells, termed PCDS
(popular content downloading scheduling), where both D2D communications in
close proximity and concurrent transmissions are exploited to improve
transmission efficiency. In PCDS, a transmission path selection algorithm is
designed to establish multi-hop transmission paths for users, aiming at better
utilization of D2D communications and concurrent transmissions. After
transmission path selection, a concurrent transmission scheduling algorithm is
designed to maximize the spatial reuse gain. Through extensive simulations
under various traffic patterns, we demonstrate PCDS achieves near-optimal
performance in terms of delay and throughput, and also superior performance

Design and implementation of the Quarc network on-chip
Networks-on-Chip (NoC) have emerged as alternative to buses to provide a packet-switched communication medium for modular development of large Systems-on-Chip. However, to successfully replace its predecessor, the NoC has to be able to efficiently exchange all types of traffic including collective communications. The latter is especially important for e.g. cache updates in multicore systems. The Quarc NoC architecture has been introduced as a Networks-on-Chip which is highly efficient in exchanging all types of traffic including broadcast and multicast. In this paper we present the hardware implementation of the switch architecture and the network adapter (transceiver) of the Quarc NoC. Moreover, the paper presents an analysis and comparison of the cost and performance between the Quarc and the Spidergon NoCs implemented in Verilog targeting the Xilinx Virtex FPGA family. We demonstrate a dramatic improvement in performance over the Spidergon especially for broadcast traffic, at no additional hardware cost
