Technology Push, Demand Pull And The Shaping Of Technological Paradigms - Patterns In The Development Of Computing Technology
An assumption generally subscribed in evolutionary economics is thatnew technological paradigms arise from advances is science anddevelopments in technological knowledge. Demand only influences theselection among competing paradigms, and the course the paradigm afterits inception. In this paper we argue that this view needs to beadapted. We demonstrate that in the history of computing technology inthe 20th century a distinction can be made between periods in whicheither demand or knowledge development was the dominant enabler ofinnovation. Career Transitions and Trajectories: A Case Study in Computing
From artificial intelligence to network security to hardware design, it is
well-known that computing research drives many important technological and
societal advancements. However, less is known about the long-term career paths
of the people behind these innovations. What do their careers reveal about the
evolution of computing research? Which institutions were and are the most
important in this field, and for what reasons? Can insights into computing
career trajectories help predict employer retention?
In this paper we analyze several decades of post-PhD computing careers using
a large new dataset rich with professional information, and propose a versatile
career network model, R^3, that captures temporal career dynamics. With R^3 we
track important organizations in computing research history, analyze career
movement between industry, academia, and government, and build a powerful
predictive model for individual career transitions. Our study, the first of its
kind, is a starting point for understanding computing research careers, and may
inform employer recruitment and retention mechanisms at a time when the demand
for specialized computational expertise far exceeds supply.Comment: To appear in KDD 201

Submission to the Commons Select Committee on Education
Computing is a rigorous, intellectually rich discipline alongside Maths, Science, or History. Like those subjects, Computing explores foundational principles and ideas, rather than training students in skills that date quickly. In an increasingly digital, knowledge-based age, Computing is fundamental both to full citizenship, and to our economic health as a nation. Yet, incredibly, Computing is virtually absent from UK schools. Instead, secondary schools in England currently teach ICT. The original concept behind ICT was to teach students how to use software to solve real-world problems. That would have been a tremendous achievement had it succeeded. However, what has actually happened in far too many schools is that ICT focuses solely upon IT literacy, and supporting teaching and learning in other curriculum contexts. ICT is not the discipline of understanding and knowledge of computers and the way they work.The creation of the EBac provides the perfect opportunity to send a clear signal to schools and pupils of the importance of Computing. Computing technology is clearly a technical revolution, but will most probably bring about a cultural revolution\ud
as well. The effects of this technology on human culture will be dramatic and far-reaching. Yet, computers and\ud
electronic networks are but the latest development in a long history of cognitive tools, such as writing and printing.\ud
We will examine this history, which exhibits long-term trends toward an increasing democratization of culture,\ud
before turning to today's technology. Within this framework, we will analyze the probable effects of computing on\ud

Integral equations of a cohesive zone model for history-dependent materials and their numerical solution
A nonlinear history-dependent cohesive zone (CZ) model of quasi-static crack propagation in
linear elastic and viscoelastic materials is presented. The viscoelasticity is described by a linear
Volterra integral operator in time. The normal stress on the CZ satisfies the history-dependent yield
condition, given by a nonlinear Abel-type integral operator. The crack starts propagating, breaking
the CZ, when the crack tip opening reaches a prescribed critical value. A numerical algorithm for
computing the evolution of the crack and CZ in time is discussed along with some numerical
results
