    Hierarchical relaxed partitioning system for activity recognition

    A hierarchical relaxed partitioning system (HRPS) is proposed for recognizing similar activities which has a feature space with multiple overlaps. Two feature descriptors are built from the human motion analysis of a 2D stick figure to represent cyclic and non-cyclic activities. The HRPS first discerns the pure and impure activities, i.e., with no overlaps and multiple overlaps in the feature space respectively, then tackles the multiple overlaps problem of the impure activities via an innovative majority voting scheme. The results show that the proposed method robustly recognises various activities of two different resolution data sets, i.e., low and high (with different views). The advantage of HRPS lies in the real-time speed, ease of implementation and extension, and non-intensive training

    Prospects of a mathematical theory of human behavior in complex man-machine systems tasks

    A hierarchy of human activities is derived by analyzing automobile driving in general terms. A structural description leads to a block diagram and a time-sharing computer analogy. The range of applicability of existing mathematical models is considered with respect to the hierarchy of human activities in actual complex tasks. Other mathematical tools so far not often applied to man machine systems are also discussed. The mathematical descriptions at least briefly considered here include utility, estimation, control, queueing, and fuzzy set theory as well as artificial intelligence techniques. Some thoughts are given as to how these methods might be integrated and how further work might be pursued

    Relevance of Negative Links in Graph Partitioning: A Case Study Using Votes From the European Parliament

    In this paper, we want to study the informative value of negative links in signed complex networks. For this purpose, we extract and analyze a collection of signed networks representing voting sessions of the European Parliament (EP). We first process some data collected by the VoteWatch Europe Website for the whole 7 th term (2009-2014), by considering voting similarities between Members of the EP to define weighted signed links. We then apply a selection of community detection algorithms, designed to process only positive links, to these data. We also apply Parallel Iterative Local Search (Parallel ILS), an algorithm recently proposed to identify balanced partitions in signed networks. Our results show that, contrary to the conclusions of a previous study focusing on other data, the partitions detected by ignoring or considering the negative links are indeed remarkably different for these networks.     A Wafer Bin Map "Relaxed" Clustering Algorithm for Improving Semiconductor Production Yield

    AbstractThe semiconductor manufacturing process involves long and complex activities, with intensive use of resources. Producers compete through the introduction of new technologies for increasing yield and reducing costs. So, yield improvement is becoming increasingly important since advanced production technologies are complex and interrelated. In particular, Wafer Bin Maps (WBMs) presenting specific fault models provide crucial information to keep track of process problems in semiconductor manufacturing. Production control is often based on the "judgement" of expert engineers who, however, carry out the analysis of map templates through simple visual exploration. In this way, existing studies are subjective, time consuming, and are also limited by the capacity of human recognition. This study proposes a network-based data mining approach, which integrates correlation graphs with clustering analysis to quickly extract patterns from WBMs and then bind them to manufacturing defects. An empirical study has been conducted on real production data for validating the proposed clustering algorithm, which showed a perfect correspondence between the malfunction patterns found by the algorithm and those discovered by human experts, so confirming the validity of our approach in its ability of correctly identifying actual defective patterns to help improving production yield
