Delaunay-kolmioinnin hyödyntäminen infrastruktuurin suunnitteluohjelmistoissa
In Finland, irregular triangulation has traditionally been used in infrastructural design software, such as road, railroad, bridge, tunnel and environmental design software, to model ground surfaces. Elsewhere, methods like regular square and triangle network, approximating surface without a surface presentation, and algebraic surfaces, have been used for the same task.
Approximating the ground surface is necessary for tasks such as determining the height of a point on the ground, interpolating 2D polylines onto the ground, calculating height lines, calculating volumes and visualization.
In most of these cases, a continuous surface representation, a digital terrain model is needed. Delaunay triangulation is a way of forming an irregular triangulation out of a 2D point set, in such a way that the triangles are well-formed. Well-formed triangles are essential for the accuracy of the surface representation.
This Master's Thesis studies how much time and memory it takes to form a Delaunay triangulation for large point sets, and how Delaunay triangulation compares to other methods of forming a surface representation. In addition, the run-time and accuracy of the resulting surface representations is studied in different interpolation and volume calculation tasks.
Delaunay-kolmiointi on tapa muodosta 2-ulotteisesta pistejoukosta epäsäännöllinen kolmioverkko, jonka kolmiot hyvin tasamuotoisia. Kolmioiden tasamuotoisuus on oleellisesta pintamallin tarkkuudelle.
Tässä työssä tutkitaan Delaunay-kolmioinnin käytettävyyttä maaston mallintamiseen suurilla pistejoukoilla, sekä epäsäännöllisen kolmioinnin käytettävyyttä em. tehtäviin. Työssä vertaillaan Delaunay-kolmioinnin muodostamisen ajan ja muistin kulutusta pintaesityksen muodostamiseen muilla menetelmillä. Lisäksi tutkitaan näin muodostettujen pintamallien tilavuuslaskennan ja interpolaation nopeutta ja tarkkuutta
A Partially Randomized Approach to Trajectory Planning and Optimization for Mobile Robots with Flat Dynamics
Motion planning problems are characterized by huge search spaces and complex obstacle structures with no concise mathematical expression. The fixed-wing airplane application considered in this thesis adds differential constraints and point-wise bounds, i. e. an infinite number of equality and inequality constraints.
An optimal trajectory planning approach is presented, based on the randomized Rapidly-exploring Random Trees framework (RRT*).
The local planner relies on differential flatness of the equations of motion to obtain tree branch candidates that automatically satisfy the differential constraints. Flat output trajectories, in this case equivalent to the airplane's flight path, are designed using Bézier curves. Segment feasibility in terms of point-wise inequality constraints is tested by an indicator integral, which is evaluated alongside the segment cost functional.
Although the RRT* guarantees optimality in the limit of infinite planning time, it is argued by intuition and experimentation that convergence is not approached at a practically useful rate. Therefore, the randomized planner is augmented by a deterministic variational optimization technique. To this end, the optimal planning task is formulated as a semi-infinite optimization problem, using the intermediate result of the RRT(*) as an initial guess. The proposed optimization algorithm follows the feasible flavor of the primal-dual interior point paradigm. Discretization of functional (infinite) constraints is deferred to the linear subproblems, where it is realized implicitly by numeric quadrature. An inherent numerical ill-conditioning of the method is circumvented by a reduction-like approach, which tracks active constraint locations by introducing new problem variables. Obstacle avoidance is achieved by extending the line search procedure and dynamically adding obstacle-awareness constraints to the problem formulation.
Experimental evaluation confirms that the hybrid approach is practically feasible and does indeed outperform RRT*'s built-in optimization mechanism, but the computational burden is still significant.

Handwritten text generation and strikethrough characters augmentation
We introduce two data augmentation techniques, which, used with a Resnet-BiLSTM-CTC network, significantly reduce Word Error Rate and Character Error Rate beyond best-reported results on handwriting text recognition tasks. We apply a novel augmentation that simulates strikethrough text (HandWritten Blots) and a handwritten text generation method based on printed text (StackMix), which proved to be very effective in handwriting text recognition tasks. StackMix uses weakly-supervised framework to get character boundaries. Because these data augmentation techniques are independent of the network used, they could also be applied to enhance the performance of other networks and approaches to handwriting text recognition. Extensive experiments on ten handwritten text datasets show that HandWritten Blots augmentation and StackMix significantly improve the quality of handwriting text recognition models

The work examines the existing methods of decomposition, namely Kukačka and VIPER, and aims to introduce a new one. The thesis also deals with the problem of the even distribution of points inside a polygon and the problem of optimal assignment. Part of the thesis was also a small survey, where participants compared the visual aspect of the fibers created by the new method and Kukačka
Parametric Paraglider Modeling
Dynamic simulations are invaluable for studying system behavior, developing control models, and running statistical analyses. For example, paraglider flight simulations could be used to analyze how a wing behaves when it encounters wind shear, or to reconstruct the wind field that was present during a flight. Unfortunately, creating dynamics models for commercial paraglider wings is difficult: not only are detailed specifications unavailable, but even if they were, a detailed model would be laborious to create. To address that difficulty, this project develops a paraglider flight dynamics model that uses parametric components to model commercial paraglider wings given only limited technical specifications and knowledge of typical wing design. To validate the model design and implementation, an aerodynamic simulation of a reference paraglider canopy is compared to wind tunnel measurements, and a dynamic simulation of a commercial paraglider system is compared to basic flight test data. The entirety of the models and example wings are available as an open source library built on the Python scientific computing stack
Constrained deformation for evolutionary optimization
Sieger D. Constrained deformation for evolutionary optimization. Bielefeld: Universität Bielefeld; 2017.This thesis investigates shape deformation techniques for their use in design optimization tasks. In the first part, we introduce state-of-the-art deformation methods and evaluate them in a set of representative benchmarks. Based on these benchmarking results, we derive essential criteria and features a deformation technique should satisfy in order to be successfully applicable within design optimization. In the second part, we concentrate on the application and improvement of deformation techniques based on radial basis functions. We present and evaluate a unified framework for surface and volume mesh deformation and investigate questions of performance and scalability. In the final third part, we concentrate on the integration of additional constraints into the deformation, thereby improving the overall effectiveness of the design optimization process and fostering the creation of more feasible and producible design variations. We present a novel shape deformation technique that effectively maintains different types of geometric constraints such as planarity, circularity, or characteristic feature lines during deformation. At the same time, our method provides a unique level of modeling flexibility, quality, robustness, and scalability. Finally, we integrate techniques for automatic constraint detection directly into our deformation framework, thereby making our method more easily applicable within complex design optimization scenarios

Implicit muscle models for interactive character skinning
Surface deformation, or skinning is a crucial step in 3D character animation. Its role is to deform the surface representation of a character to be rendered in the succession
of poses specified by an animator. The quality and plausiblity of the displayed results directly depends on the properties of the skinning method. However, speed and simplicity
are also important criteria to enable their use in interactive editing sessions.
Current skinning methods can be divided in three categories. Geometric methods are fast and simple to use, but their results lack plausibility. Example-based approaches produce
realistic results, yet they require a large database of examples while remaining tedious to edit. Finally, physical simulations can model the most complex dynamical phenomena,
but at a very high computational cost, making their interactive use impractical.
The work presented in this thesis are based on, Implicit Skinning, is a corrective geometric approach using implicit surfaces to solve many issues of standard geometric skinning
methods, while remaining fast enough for interactive use. The main contribution of this work is an animation model that adds anatomical plausibility to a character by
representing muscle deformations and their interactions with other anatomical features, while benefiting from the advantages of Implicit Skinning. Muscles are represented by an
extrusion surface along a central axis. These axes are driven by a simplified physics simulation method, introducing dynamic effects, such as jiggling. The muscle model
guarantees volume conservation, a property of real-life muscles.
This model adds plausibility and dynamics lacking in state-of-the-art geometric methods at a moderate computational cost, which enables its interactive use. In addition, it
offers intuitive shape control to animators, enabling them to match the results with their artistic vision
Interconnection of a Forest Growth Model and a Structural Model for Young Poplar Trees (Populus spp.)
distanzunabhängigen Konkurrenzparameter “basal area of larger trees''
When planting fast-growing tree species such as poplars and willows on
agricultural land in short rotation coppice plantations, site
selection and the associated yield potential pose a central decision
for the practitioner. In connection with the cultivar aspect there has
been a need for research on the interaction between site and genotype
in terms of growth performance. The aim of this work is to examine
these questions on several levels. For this purpose, a multi-scale
approach was chosen in the framework of which two model complexes are
developed which are then connected by an interface.
The first model complex incorporates the implementation of a yield
simulator which depicts single tree based growth and mortality as a
function of competition and site conditions. The data basis for this
is growth data from the joint research project ProLoc funded by the
BMEL. For this purpose, 18 trial sites are chosen which were initiated
on a broad amplitude of environmental conditions. Following a uniform
experimental design, monoclonal trial plots with three poplar and two
willow clones (interspecific crossed hybrids) were supervised in two
tri-annual rotations and cut back after the third year. Based on the
model of the forest growth simulator BWINPro and the associated
TreeGross program library, several models are parameterized which, in
addition to the survival rates after planting and harvest, estimate
the height increment in the first and second rotation. With the
distance-independent competition index ``basal area of larger trees''
the development within the stands can be predicted. Regarding the
growth performance on the site level, the parameters of planting date,
available water capacity, German agricultural soil quality rating, sum
of precipitation in May and June and mean temperature in June and July
are identified as influential by variable selection. To estimate the
height increment and survival after pruning, tree height before
harvest is regarded as an independent variable. The factor clone indicates
differences in the growth processes within the models but interactions
with site variables can not be determined as significant. Missing
variables such as the mean annual increment in dry matter yield in
oven-dry tons ha^-1 a^-1 are estimated by additional functions
parameterized with the dataset. The individual models are connected
to a simulation procedure and the overall predictive power is
assessed. Good results can be achieved for the first rotation with
squared correlations of the observed and estimated mean stand height
of 0.79. However, in the second rotation the estimation quality
decreases to 0.53. There are single sites with considerable
deviations. The depth of the soil sampling and missing extended
information on the water supply are suspected as problematic here.
The second model complex includes a structural model focused on the
poplar genotypes and the second rotation. First, several measuring
methods were identified which are deemed suitable for determining the
tree architecture in terms of geometry and topology of the
above-ground woody biomass, as well as the morphology of foliage in
terms of leaf architecture and leaf shape. For the branch
architecture, a manual method and a semi-automatic method with an
electromagnetic digitizer for determining branch curvature have been
selected and employed. The leaf architecture was measured by a manual
method. The leaf shape could be determined by digitizing collected
leaves. After analyzing the obtained data, several models are
parameterized. As a result, the probability of bud growth and the
dimensions and orientation in space of developing shoots can be
estimated for apical and lateral buds. The models differentiate
between main and minor stems, prolongation and lateral shoots, long
and short shoots and, within the lateral shoots, sylleptic and regular
shoots. The starting point here is the estimation of the number of
internodes per shoot which in turn influences other parameters such as
the branch angle and the curvature through the shoot length. Other
factors underlying several models are the age, branch order and the
genotypic influence. Parameters such as foliage and leaf size can
mainly be estimated by the relative height with regard to the absolute tree
height. The leaf shape in turn is determined by contour points whose
coordinates are calculated as a function of the leaf blade length. As
part of the analysis of these models, only slight differences in the
structure between the clones are found. Exceptions are the curvature
and branching angles of the lateral shoots for one of the clones, for
which the models reproduce the observable slender habitus. Significant
differences also occur in the leaf shape which reflect the leaf shapes
of the underlying parent species of the hybrids. The individual model
functions are then implemented into a structural model in the model
platform GroIMP. The resulting model can simulate the development of
the tree structure for each of the three clones in annual
steps. Arbitrarily large stands can be simulated that have
realistically varying tree sizes through stochastic components in the
model.
The interconnection of the two model complexes is realized through the
import of single tree data from the yield model into the structural
model. Two further models are parameterized to determine the number of
internodes from the shoot length as annual height increment of the
yield model for the structural model and to modify the growth of the
minor stems in dependence of the main stem growth. Additionally, the
single tree mortality generated by the yield simulator is incorporated
into the structural model.
Further research will show whether it is possible to improve the yield
model by validation with data from other experiments to include deeper
soil layers here. The structural model could be extended to a complete
functional structural plant model by incorporating a physiology
module. By extending the interconnection to return data from the
structural model to the yield model, the predictive power could be
improved, for example by means of extended possibilities for modeling
the within-stand competition dynamics
