The Chronic Effects of Ballistic Stretching on Hamstring Flexibility and Vertical Jump Performance in D3 Male Basketball Athletes
Ballistic stretching may have an effect on both hamstring flexibility and vertical jump performance. PURPOSE: This study focuses on the effects of a 4-week ballistic stretching program on hamstring flexibility and vertical jump performance in Division III male basketball athletes. METHODS: Eighteen Division III male basketball athletes from TLU participated in this study. The athletes had an average height of 6’3” and an average weight of 195 lbs. In order to be included in the study, they had to meet the following criteria: (1) 18-26 years old, (2) Free from injury, and (3) Free from performance enhancing drugs. The subjects’ hamstring flexibility and vertical jump height was recorded before and after the completion of the program using the Sit-and-Reach test and the Vertec Vertical Jump test respectively. The program lasted 4 weeks (4 days per week) & consisted of 3 stretches in addition to their normal basketball practice: Sit-and-Reach, Right Elevated Leg Extension, and Left Elevated Leg Extension. Only the experimental group (consisting of 9 subjects) participated in this program. The control group (consisting of 9 subjects) only participated in normal basketball practice. RESULTS: Overall, both groups decreased in vertical jump height & increased in hamstring flexibility. However, no statistical significance was found between groups or within groups (p\u3e0.05). On average, the experimental group decreased their vertical jump height by 1.06 in. & increased their hamstring flexibility by 0.44 in. Additionally, the control group decreased their vertical jump height by 0.67 in. & increased their hamstring flexibility by 0.33 in. Data was considered significant if p ≤ 0.05. Comparing initial vs final vertical jumps (in the experimental group) using a two-tailed t-test revealed a p-value of 0.054. Comparing the average change in vertical jump among the 2 groups using the same test revealed a p-value of 0.393. Comparing initial vs final hamstring flexibilities (in the experimental group) using a one-tailed t-test revealed a p-value of 0.091. Comparing the average change in hamstring flexibility among the 2 groups using a two-tailed t-test revealed a p-value of 0.853. None of the results were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: This study failed to reject the null hypothesis. It is inconclusive whether or not ballistic stretching in addition to a basketball conditioning program has an effect on hamstring flexibility or vertical jump height
Comparison of the effect of a Physical Education-Based Stretching Program applied during the Warm-Up, ColdDown and both periods on hamstring extensibility in Primary Schoolchildren.
Purpose. To compare the effects of a physical education-based stretching program applied during the warm-up, cold-down and both periods on hamstring extensibility in primary schoolchildren.
Methods. A sample of 237 schoolchildren aged 7-12 years old (128 girls and 109 boys) from two primary school centres participated in the present study and met satisfactorily the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A cluster randomized controlled trial design was used. The classes balanced by grade were randomly assigned to the warm-up (n = 57), cold-down (n = 55), both periods (n = 61) or control groups (n = 64). During the physical education sessions, the students from the interventional groups performed a four-minute stretching program twice a week for eight weeks. The intervention program was applied during the warm-up (4 minutes), cold-down (4 minutes) and warm-up (2 minutes)-cold-down (2 minutes) for the warm-up, cold-down and both periods groups, respectively. Hamstring extensibility (estimated by the back-saver sit-and-reach test) was assessed at the beginning and at the end of the intervention program.
Results. The one-way ANOVA (p 0.05).
Conclusions. In order to develop students’ flexibility, PE teachers should apply stretching programs during the cold-down period. Due to the negative effect of static stretching on performance as previously found in the literature, it seems that PE teachers should improve students´ flexibility during the cool-down period of the sessions.
Jumlah responden berjumlah 50 orang. Alat ukur fleksibilitas menggunakan sit and reach test.
Background: When workers experience health problems can lead to the production of stunted and even longer production time thus increasing the cost of production, and therefore can reduce the market demand. It is important to know the health problems that will be experienced by the workers of the sandpaper. One of the complaints that tend to be experienced labor pains motion when sanding the stand immediately after squatting position when working, the motion pain is due to the shortening of the hamstring muscles from a static squat position then occurs stretching the hamstring muscles when standing. Squatting position that lasts too long can cause joint stiffness and muscle resulting in shortening, contractures, and even weakness of muscle strength.
Objective: determine the relationship between the old squat against labor flexibility of the hamstring muscles on sandpaper. Research Methodology: This study uses explanatory research methods and the implementation using cross-sectional approach. The number of respondents totaled 50 people. Measuring tool flexibility using the sit and reach test.

Results and Conclusions: : test results on the relationship between the old squat flexibility of the hamstring muscles to get the p-value of 0.02 (p <0.05) with odds ratio of 0.031, which means there is a connection between the old squat against the risk of hamstring muscle flexibility 0,031. So that there is a relationship between the old squat to hamstring muscle flexibility on labor sandpaper furniture in Jepara
Criterion-related validity of sit-and-reach and toe-touch tests as a measure of hamstring extensibility in athletes
The aims of this study were (a) to determine and compare the concurrent hamstring criterion- related validity of the sit-and-reach (SR) and toe-touch (TT) tests in different athletes (tennis players, kayakers, canoeists, and cyclists); (b) to determine the criterion-related validity of the pel- vic tilt assessed by the Spinal Mouse system as a measure of hamstring flexibility in athletes; and (c) to evaluate the influence of spinal posture, pelvic tilt, and hamstring muscle flexibility in the SR and TT scores. Twenty-four tennis players, 30 canoeists, 43 kayakers, and 44 cyclists were recruited. Passive straight leg raise (PSLR), SR, and TT tests were randomly performed. Spinal curvatures and pelvic tilt were evaluated with a Spinal Mouse system when the maximal trunk flexion was achieved in the SR and TT tests. Tennis players and cyclists showed moderate cor- relations between PSLR with respect to SR (b = 0.78 and b = 0.76, respectively) and TT (b = 0.77 and b = 0.74, respectively). Correlations were slightly lower in canoeists (SR, b = 0.64; TT, b = 0.75). Kayakers showed the lowest correlation values (SR, b = 0.53; TT, b = 0.57). Correlation values between PSLR and pelvic tilt angle in both the SR and TT tests were b , 0.70 in all the groups of athletes. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed a high variance explained from pelvic tilt and lumbar spine in the SR score. In conclusion, the SR and TT tests can be appropriate measures to determine spine flexibility and pelvic tilt range of motion but not to evaluate the hamstring muscle flexibility in tennis players, canoeists, kayakers, and cyclists.Actividad Física y Deport
