Poetical potentials: the value of poems in social impact education

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. For the technologist it is easy to remain in safe technological enclaves with a bespoke language, a community of like minds and a familiar knowledge base. However, progress requires pushing the boundaries, thinking beyond the traditional and the ordinary, and questioning accepted norms. It requires opening of minds. It may surprise the reader that poetry can offer the key to unlock the closed mind. This potential is explored through a variety of poems dealing, in a novel manner, with the social impact of technology

25 years of endothelin research: the next generation

    Get PDF
In the past three decades, endothelin and endothelin receptor antagonists have received great scientific and clinical interest, leading to the publication of more than 27,000 scientific articles since its discovery. The Thirteenth International Conference on Endothelin (ET-13) was held on September 8–11, 2013, at Tokyo Campus of the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Close to 300 scientists from 25 countries from around the world came to Tokyo to celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of the endothelin peptide discovered 25 years ago at the University of Tsukuba. This article summarizes some of the highlights of the conference, the anniversary celebration ceremony, and particularly the participation of next generation of endothelin researchers in endothelin science and the anniversary celebration. As a particular highlight, next generation endothelin researchers wrote a haiku (a traditional form of Japanese poetry originating from consisting of no more than three short verses and 27 on, or Japanese phonetic units) to describe the magic of endothelin science which they presented to the conference audience at the anniversary ceremony. The text of each haiku – both in its original language together with the English translation – is part of this article providing in an exemplary fashion how poetry can be bridged with science. Finally, we give an outlook towards the next 25 years of endothelin research

The effects of enforced reflection in three simple experiments

Rubinstein (2007) has recently found that the frequency of (types of) decisions made in Internet experiments are related to the time taken for these decisions. Other authors have investigated this relationship by exerting some time pressure. In this paper, I report on an attempt to do the opposite, i.e., to enforce a longer reflection time. To ensure that subjects do not just wait but actually think for five minutes, they had to perform a five minutes focused free writing task. Free writing is a standard method adopted from creative writing courses; subjects are asked to write up everything that currently runs through their minds, without pausing. Enforced reflection significantly decreases the number chosen in beauty contest experiments, thus increasing the winning probability, and it increases the amount given in the solidarity game. For women, this increase is economically and statistically significant. The average amount offered in the ultimatum game is not higher for those who had performed the free writing task. However, after free writing, the share of 50:50 offers is significantly higher, which is in conflict with Rubinstein's conjecture that 50:50 offers take less time because they are instinctive (as opposed to cognitive).free writing, decision time, beauty contest, solidarity game, ultimatum game

A recommended approach to the judging of creative writing

This article offers an insight into ways the reader can appreciate haiku poetry. Contest judging techniques are revealed and specific judging criteria arc proposed. Trying to judge short poems by applying a set of objective standards from the outset of a contest might be putting the cart before the horse. Provided that the judges of a haiku competition are experienced readers who can articulate what it is they like or dislike about a poem, and provided that there is a panel of judges and not just one person, this article proposes that there is no reason why readers shouldn\u27t let themselves be guided first and foremost by their subjective experience of a poem

Developing brands for the 21th century with haiku in English

    Get PDF
This paper studies the product andplace branding strategies of an international tea company and a city in Japan which associate themselves with haiku in English.Surveys and free word association tests were used to reveal the thoughts of participants concerning three stimulus words—haiku, tea, and washoku. These stimulus words retrieved a cluster of associations that were analyzed and triangulated so that they could be classified according to predetermined criteria. The cue word haiku was quantitatively assessed to make inferences about branding strategics such as the "Oi Ocha New Haiku Contest" carried out by Itoen Co. Ltd. for its internationally marketed products. As well, inferences aremade about Matsuyama City\u27s strategy to attract more tourists from overseas by positioning itself as the "World Capital of Haiku Culture" and by promoting photo-haiku as a new movement
