Dependence of the thermoluminescent high-temperature ratio (HTR) of LiF:Mg,Ti detectors on proton energy and dose
The high-temperature ratio (HTR) is a parameter quantifying changes of the
shape of the high-temperature part of the LiF:Mg,Ti glow-curve after exposure
to densely ionizing radiation. It was introduced in order to estimate the
effective LET of an unknown radiation field and to correct the decreased
relative TL efficiency for high Linear Energy Transfer (LET) radiation. In the
present work the dependence of HTR on proton energy (14.5 to 58 MeV) and dose
(0.5 to 30 Gy) was investigated. All measured HTR values were at the level of
1.2 or higher, therefore significantly different from the respective value for
gamma rays (HTR is equal to 1), but HTR was found to be insensitive to changes
of proton energy above 20 MeV. As a result the relationship between HTR and
relative TL efficiency is not unequivocal. The HTR was found to be dependent on

hTERT protein expression is independent of clinicopathological parameters and c-Myc protein expression in human breast cancer
Background
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein enzyme that synthesises telomeres after cell division and maintains chromosomal stability leading to cellular immortalization. Telomerase has been associated with negative prognostic indicators in some studies. The present study aims to detect any association between telomerase sub-units: hTERT and hTR and the prognostic indicators including tumour's size and grade, nodal status and patient's age.
Methods
Tumour samples from 46 patients with primary invasive breast cancer and 3 patients with benign tumours were collected. RT-PCR analysis was used for the detection of hTR, hTERT, and PGM1 (as a housekeeping) genes expression.
Results
The expression of hTR and hTERT was found in 31(67.4%) and 38 (82.6%) samples respectively. We observed a significant association between hTR gene expression and younger age at diagnosis (p = 0.019) when comparing patients ≤ 40 years with those who are older than 40 years. None of the benign tumours expressed hTR gene. However, the expression of hTERT gene was revealed in 2 samples.
No significant association between hTR and hTERT expression and tumour's grade, stage and nodal status was seen.
Conclusion
The expression of hTR and hTERT seems to be independent of tumour's stage. hTR expression probably plays a greater role in mammary tumourogenesis in younger women (≤ 40 years) and this may have therapeutic implications in the context of hTR targeting strategies

A mixed method for Dirichlet problems with radial basis functions
We present a simple discretization by radial basis functions for the Poisson
equation with Dirichlet boundary condition. A Lagrangian multiplier using
piecewise polynomials is used to accommodate the boundary condition. This
simplifies previous attempts to use radial basis functions in the interior
domain to approximate the solution and on the boundary to approximate the
multiplier, which technically requires that the mesh norm in the interior
domain is significantly smaller than that on the boundary. Numerical
