A History of Islam among the Fakkawa of Zuru Emirate, 1910-2015
Zuru Emirate is one of the four existing emirates in Kebbi States, Nigeria. Within the emirate, Fakkawa are mostly found in Fakai Local Government. Because of the prevalence of traditional belief system among the Fakkawa up to the early 20th century and limited literature on the development of Islam in the area, people outside region still look at Fakkawa as traditionalists, which is not the case. Traders and Muslim scholars played important roles in the spread of Islam among the Fakkawa. Also important were the roles of Muslim organizations principally the Jama'atul Izalatil Bid'ah Wa Ikamatis Sunnah. This organization contributed significantly towards the spread of Islam and development of Islamic education among the Fakkawa. Consequently, the traditional belief system has been in a state of decline in the area. Data obtained from books, dissertations and thesis, and through oral interviews, were studied, analysed and corroborated
The History And Development Of Islam In The District Of Dairi, North Sumatera Province
The coming of Islam in the district of Dairi started form
Barus and developed by people from Aceh(some of them are clerics)who one of them is Koser Maha. Among of the developers of Islam in Dairi is still a mystery of
their existence, such as Teuku Panjang Rambut (a Royal Man from Aceh with long hair)who was able to change his being or performance, and he is still alive as it is believed by the local people. Although the majority of the population of Dairi are non-Muslims,the teachings of Islam, however, can be received by the society because there is are similarities between the teachings of Islam and the culture of the Pakpak (the indiginous inhabitants of Dairi). The spread of Islam in Dairi was done through relation of kinship, ethical examples, mysticism, and lah kanuragan (martial arts) and kesaktian (magical power). These methods were very different from the way the Dutch colonial when spreading Christianity in Dairi that is done through the genocidal extermination or ethnic cleansing so that many Pakpak people were expelled from Dairi to some neighboring regions in order to save themselves. luckily, even though the Muslims are minority in Dairi, but social relation in terms of religious harmony is very good
THE LABYRINTH OF PHILOSOPHY IN ISLAM
This paper focuses on the methodological issues related to the obstacles and potential horizons of approaching the philosophical traditions in Islam from the standpoint of comparative studies in philosophy, while also presenting selected case-studies that may potentially illustrate some of the possibilities of renewing the impetus of a philosophical thought that is inspired by Islamic intellectual history. This line of inquiry is divided into two parts: the first deals with questions of methodology, and the second focuses on ontology and phenomenology of perception, by way of offering pathways in investigating the history of philosophical and scientific ideas in Islam from the viewpoint of contemporary debates in philosophy. A special emphasis will be placed on: (a) interpreting the ontology of the eleventh century metaphysician Ibn Sina (known in Latin as: Avicenna; d. 1037 CE) in terms of rethinking Heidegger\u27s critique of the history of metaphysics, and (b) analyzing the philosophical implications of the theory of vision of the eleventh century polymath Ibn al-Haytham (known in Latin as Alhazen; d. ca. 1041 CE) in terms of reflecting on Merleau-Ponty\u27s phenomenology of perception
Women's Ijtihad and Lady Amin's Islamic ethics on womanhood and motherhood
Women's position, identity, and value in Islam have been affected by androcentric interpretations of the Qur'an and hadith throughout Islamic history. Women's roles in society, as well as their position vis-a-vis Islamic sources and authority, have been shaped by these interpretations. In Shi'a Islam, due to the majority male clergy's resistance, women have rarely reached the highest loci of Shi'i authority and jurisprudence. However, there have been women scholars who have transgressed these normative frameworks. Lady Amin, who was one of the most prominent Iranian theologians of the 19th and 20th centuries, is a notable example. Lady Amin had great knowledge of jurisprudence and gained the status of mujtahida at the age of forty. Her scholarly work addressed not only interpretations of the Qur'an and hadith, but also women's issues and gender politics of her time. This study addresses women's ijtihad in Shi'a Islam and investigates Lady Amin's teachings on the topics of womanhood and motherhood. This study focuses on Lady Amin's book of Islamic ethics, titled Ways of Happiness: Suggestions for Faithful Sisters, written as a Shi'i source of guidance with a specific focus on women and gender in Shi'a Islam
Religious Difference in a Secular Age: The Minority Report by Saba Mahmoud (2016) Book Review
The Minority Report is a text that tries to respond to the problem of essentializing Islam (the culturalism problem) by performing a flip so that all the bad attributes typically associated with “Islam” are now attributed to secularism instead. It is secularism that discriminates, that is sectarian, that encourages violence, that is repressive, sexist, etc. This Mahmood does by on the one hand hyper-politicizing secularism (depleting it of its universalist drive), and on the other under-politicizing it by ignoring its internal indeterminacy, complexity, open structure and varied distributive effects. The result is an account that moves between crude historicism-secularism is its history- and formalist generalizations reminiscent of the ways “Islam” is treated in mainstream discourse. Islam is nothing but the history of its conquests and its doctrines create the world in a specific way.
But a flip does not a critique make
The History of Islam and Its Dissemination in Ambon-lease, Maluku
Research on the history of Islam and its dissemination on the island of Maluku have hitherto been lacking analytical depth. This paper tries to fill that gap by analysisng four stages in the development of Islam on the Island, referring to approaches to study Islam and Muslims. First, the stage of integration in which Islam tried to incorporate local values and their ramifications. Second, the stage of war and resistance in which the attempts of Islam to become the dominant power on the region face a strong confrontation from the existing power. Third, the stage of reformation and renewal in which Islam interrogates and evaluates itself so as to present itself within the context of Maluku. Fourth, the stage of modern era in which Islam faces challenges not only from other religions mainly Christianity which is equally strong on the island, but also from modernity and its narratives
