Closed-loop Verification of Medical Devices With Model Abstraction and Refinement
The design and implementation of software for medical devices is challenging due to the closed-loop interaction with the patient, which is a stochastic physical environment. The safety-critical nature and the lack of existing industry standards for verification, make this an ideal domain for exploring applications of formal modeling and closed-loop analysis. The biggest challenge is that the environment model(s) have to be both complex enough to express the physiological requirements, and general enough to cover all possible inputs to the device. In this effort, we use a dual chamber implantable pacemaker as a case study to demonstrate verification of software specifications of medical devices as timed-automata models in UPPAAL. The pacemaker model is based on the specifications and algorithm descriptions from Boston Scientific. The heart is modeled using timed automata based on the physiology of heart. The model is gradually abstracted with timed simulation to preserve properties. A manual Counter-Example-Guided Abstraction and Refinement (CEGAR) framework has been adapted to refine the heart model when spurious counter-examples are found. To demonstrate the closed-loop nature of the problem and heart model refinement, we investigated two clinical cases of Pacemaker Mediated Tachycardia and verified their corresponding correction algorithms in the pacemaker. Along with our tools for code generation from UPPAAL models, this effort enables model-driven design and certification of software for medical devices
Development of a framework for automated systematic testing of safety-critical embedded systems

In model-based testing the test cases are derived from a model of the system under test. In our approach the model is an automaton model that is automatically extracted from the C-source code of the system under test. Beside random test data generation the test case generation uses formal methods, in detail model checking techniques. To find appropriate test cases we use the requirements defined in the system specification. To cover further execution paths we developed an additional, to our best knowledge, novel method based on special structural coverage criteria. We present preliminary results on the model extraction using a concrete industrial case study from the automotive domain
Enabling Communication Technologies for Automated Unmanned Vehicles in Industry 4.0
Within the context of Industry 4.0, mobile robot systems such as automated
guided vehicles (AGVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are one of the major
areas challenging current communication and localization technologies. Due to
stringent requirements on latency and reliability, several of the existing
solutions are not capable of meeting the performance required by industrial
automation applications. Additionally, the disparity in types and applications
of unmanned vehicle (UV) calls for more flexible communication technologies in
order to address their specific requirements. In this paper, we propose several
use cases for UVs within the context of Industry 4.0 and consider their
respective requirements. We also identify wireless technologies that support

Cloud service localisation
The essence of cloud computing is the provision of software
and hardware services to a range of users in dierent locations. The aim of cloud service localisation is to facilitate the internationalisation and localisation of cloud services by allowing their adaption to dierent locales.
We address the lingual localisation by providing service-level language translation techniques to adopt services to dierent languages and regulatory localisation by providing standards-based mappings to achieve regulatory compliance with regionally varying laws, standards and regulations. The aim is to support and enforce the explicit modelling of
aspects particularly relevant to localisation and runtime support consisting of tools and middleware services to automating the deployment based on models of locales, driven by the two localisation dimensions.
We focus here on an ontology-based conceptual information model that integrates locale specication in a coherent way
SmartUnit: Empirical Evaluations for Automated Unit Testing of Embedded Software in Industry
In this paper, we aim at the automated unit coverage-based testing for
embedded software. To achieve the goal, by analyzing the industrial
requirements and our previous work on automated unit testing tool CAUT, we
rebuild a new tool, SmartUnit, to solve the engineering requirements that take
place in our partner companies. SmartUnit is a dynamic symbolic execution
implementation, which supports statement, branch, boundary value and MC/DC
coverage. SmartUnit has been used to test more than one million lines of code
in real projects. For confidentiality motives, we select three in-house real
projects for the empirical evaluations. We also carry out our evaluations on
two open source database projects, SQLite and PostgreSQL, to test the
scalability of our tool since the scale of the embedded software project is
mostly not large, 5K-50K lines of code on average. From our experimental
results, in general, more than 90% of functions in commercial embedded software
achieve 100% statement, branch, MC/DC coverage, more than 80% of functions in
SQLite achieve 100% MC/DC coverage, and more than 60% of functions in
PostgreSQL achieve 100% MC/DC coverage. Moreover, SmartUnit is able to find the
runtime exceptions at the unit testing level. We also have reported exceptions
like array index out of bounds and divided-by-zero in SQLite. Furthermore, we
analyze the reasons of low coverage in automated unit testing in our setting
and give a survey on the situation of manual unit testing with respect to

New generation E-learning technology by Web Services.
This paper discusses a new approach to build infrastructures for E-Learning systems for Learning Software Organizations on the basis of Web Services. A requirements context is developed to determine which type of E-Learning applications that can be Web Service Enabled. This is illustrated with a case study on an Encapsulated Software Teaching Environment. Additional facilities, such as didactical agents and deep personalization to facilitate Learning Software Organizations are discussed at the end.
