Mirror, mirror on the wall: The effect of time spent grooming on wages
It is well understood that personal grooming provides an important source of communication about individuals, their values and personalities. From an economic point of view, grooming is a non-market activity. The standard view is that time spent in non-market activities is counterproductive as it reduces work effort and job commitment. But grooming is different. There is reason to believe that certain productive personality traits may be inferred on the basis of personal grooming. Using data from the American Time Use survey, we investigate whether workers who spend more time grooming earn higher wages. The evidence shows that while higher levels of grooming time increases wages for men, there is no significant effect on women’s wages. We also find evidence that the returns to grooming are even larger for minority males.
Characterizing Pedophile Conversations on the Internet using Online Grooming
Cyber-crime targeting children such as online pedophile activity are a major
and a growing concern to society. A deep understanding of predatory chat
conversations on the Internet has implications in designing effective solutions
to automatically identify malicious conversations from regular conversations.
We believe that a deeper understanding of the pedophile conversation can result
in more sophisticated and robust surveillance systems than majority of the
current systems relying only on shallow processing such as simple word-counting
or key-word spotting.
In this paper, we study pedophile conversations from the perspective of
online grooming theory and perform a series of linguistic-based empirical
analysis on several pedophile chat conversations to gain useful insights and
patterns. We manually annotated 75 pedophile chat conversations with six stages
of online grooming and test several hypothesis on it. The results of our
experiments reveal that relationship forming is the most dominant online
grooming stage in contrast to the sexual stage. We use a widely used
word-counting program (LIWC) to create psycho-linguistic profiles for each of
the six online grooming stages to discover interesting textual patterns useful
to improve our understanding of the online pedophile phenomenon. Furthermore,
we present empirical results that throw light on various aspects of a pedophile
conversation such as probability of state transitions from one stage to
another, distribution of a pedophile chat conversation across various online
grooming stages and correlations between pre-defined word categories and online
grooming stages
Evolution of Human-like Social Grooming Strategies regarding Richness and Group Size
Human beings tend to cooperate with close friends, therefore they have to
construct strong social relationships to recieve cooperation from others.
Therefore they should have acquired their strategies of social relationship
construction through an evolutionary process. The behavior of social
relationship construction is know as "social grooming." In this paper, we show
that there are four classes including a human-like strategy in evolutionary
dynamics of social grooming strategies based on an evolutionary game
simulation. Social relationship strengths (as measured by frequency of social
grooming) often show a much skewed distribution (a power law distribution). It
may be due to time costs constraints on social grooming, because the costs are
too large to ignore for having many strong social relationships. Evolution of
humans' strategies of construction of social relationships may explain the
origin of human intelligence based on a social brain hypothesis. We constructed
an individual-based model to explore the evolutionary dynamics of social
grooming strategies. The model is based on behavior to win over others by
strengthening social relationships with cooperators. The results of
evolutionary simulations show the four classes of evolutionary dynamics. The
results depend on total resources and the ratio of each cooperator's resource
to the number of cooperators. One of the four classes is similar to a human
strategy, i.e. the strategies based on the Yule--Simon process of power law.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figure
Two Types of Social Grooming Methods depending on the Trade-off between the Number and Strength of Social Relationships
Humans use various social bonding methods known as social grooming, e.g. face
to face communication, greetings, phone, and social networking sites (SNS). SNS
have drastically decreased time and distance constraints of social grooming. In
this paper, I show that two types of social grooming (elaborate social grooming
and lightweight social grooming) were discovered in a model constructed by
thirteen communication data-sets including face to face, SNS, and Chacma
baboons. The separation of social grooming methods is caused by a difference in
the trade-off between the number and strength of social relationships. The
trade-off of elaborate social grooming is weaker than the trade-off of
lightweight social grooming. On the other hand, the time and effort of
elaborate methods are higher than lightweight methods. Additionally, my model
connects social grooming behaviour and social relationship forms with these
trade-offs. By analyzing the model, I show that individuals tend to use
elaborate social grooming to reinforce a few close relationships (e.g. face to
face and Chacma baboons). In contrast, people tend to use lightweight social
grooming to maintain many weak relationships (e.g. SNS). Humans with
lightweight methods who live in significantly complex societies use various

The grooming process in sport: Case studies of sexual harassment and abuse
Drawing on interviews with two elite female athletes from different sports, one from a study in Norway and the other from a study in England, this article explores the process of 'grooming' in the context of sport. Both athletes experienced grooming for sex by their male coaches yet were able to stop the process at a particular point. Grooming has been used to demarcate 'sexual harassment' and 'sexual abuse' as separate points on a continuum of sexually exploitative behaviours. Grooming involves slowly gaining trust before systematically breaking down interpersonal barriers. Elite athletes can become trapped into compliance because they trust and like, or even love, their abusers. The motivation behind sexual harassment and abuse is often power, whereby the harasser seeks to take control over another individual. The abusers use threats (such as being cut from the team) and rewards or privileges to secure co-operation and manipulate the victims to maintain secrecy. Our primary purpose here is to use these adapted realist tales to provide a richer and more personal illustration of these events (within-case) than is presented through extrapolated checklists of 'risk factors' (cross-case). The stories also illustrate vividly elements from the different stages in the grooming process in sport, as described in previous literature. Finally, they reinforce the need to identify protective factors as part of anti-harassment and abuse prevention programmes with both coaches and athletes

After all, Europe had had a long-standing relationship with blaming the Jews for the world’s miseries. A relationship Germany was ready to refuel, as indicated by German Field Marshal Walter von Reichenau, when he stated that ‘the most essential aim of war against the Jewish-bolshevistic system is a complete destruction of their means of power and the elimination of Asiatic influence from the European culture.’ But the German fears of Jewish interference with their great scheme for Europe’s future, must surely have been inspired by more than just the age-old conspiratorial allegation that Jews were the main forces behind world politics. As such, this essay will seek to inspect the apparent rise of antisemitic fears at the time, and put a case forward to show how religion played into all this
The pivotal role of rank in grooming and support behaviour in a captive group of bonobos (Pan paniscus)
We investigated dyadic grooming relationships in a captive group of bonobos (Pan paniscus)
and questioned what social function grooming fulfils in the market of services and favors.
Hereto we examined which of two theoretical models - grooming for support (Seyfarth,
1977, 1980) or grooming according to the similarity principle (de Waal & Luttrell, 1986) -
best accounted for the observed grooming distribution. Similarity in traits did not correlate
with increased grooming or close proximity among the individuals. Therefore, the similarity
hypothesis was rejected. Seyfarths model of rank-related grooming was largely confirmed.
The animals distributed their grooming according to the rank of the receivers. We found an
exchange between grooming and receipt of support. There was more grooming up than down
the hierarchy. However, not all predictions about rank-related competition over grooming
were confirmed. We found that dyadic grooming reciprocity indeed increased with decreasing
rank distance. Yet, there was no increase of grooming within the dyad with decreasing
rank distance and high ranking individuals were not competed over at the highest rates.
The observed correlation between grooming and support received represents an important
fit with Seyfarths prediction, but does not allow for conclusions about underlying causal
processes. Other causal explanations, besides the groom to receive support hypothesis, that
could explain a similar correlation are discussed
