    The knowing ear : an Australian test of universal claims about the semantic structure of sensory verbs and their extension into the domain of cognition

    In this paper we test previous claims concerning the universality of patterns of polysemy and semantic change in perception verbs. Implicit in such claims are two elements: firstly, that the sharing of two related senses A and B by a given form is cross-linguistically widespread, and matched by a complementary lack of some rival polysemy, and secondly that the explanation for the ubiquity of a given pattern of polysemy is ultimately rooted in our shared human cognitive make-up. However, in comparison to the vigorous testing of claimed universals that has occurred in phonology, syntax and even basic lexical meaning, there has been little attempt to test proposed universals of semantic extension against a detailed areal study of non-European languages. To address this problem we examine a broad range of Australian languages to evaluate two hypothesized universals: one by Viberg (1984), concerning patterns of semantic extension across sensory modalities within the domain of perception verbs (i .e. intra-field extensions), and the other by Sweetser (1990), concerning the mapping of perception to cognition (i.e. trans-field extensions). Testing against the Australian data allows one claimed universal to survive, but demolishes the other, even though both assign primacy to vision among the senses

    Overcoming Privacy Challenges In Mobile-Cloud Computing

    The integration of mobile devices with cloud computing systems results in a platform which is well-suited for the aggregation of customer behavior. Many organizations are capitalizing on this opportunity to harvest user data. They offer free software, content, and services in order to observe customer behavior. However, users have grown wary of increasingly comprehensive and granular profiling. The public’s rejection of certain applications show there is growing resistance to this business practice. The present study overcomes these concerns by proposing four alternative privacy models. The viability of these privacy models is assessed using a broad public survey. The results suggest that organizations can alleviate consumers’ privacy concerns by incorporating elements of the proposed alternative privacy models into their businesses

    Effects of Surgical Repair or Reconstruction on Radiocarpal Mechanics from Wrists with Scapholunate Ligament Injury

    Osteoarthritis as a result of injury/trauma is a significant problem, and there is still a need to develop tools for evaluating joint injuries and the effectiveness of surgical treatments. For the wrist in particular, injury to the scapholunate ligament from impact loading, can lead to scapholunate joint instability. Without treatment, this can lead to progressive development of wrist osteoarthritis. Joint contact pressures are important mechanical factors in the etiology of osteoarthritis, and these can be determined non-invasively through computer modeling. Hence, the goal of this work was to investigate the effects of scapholunate ligament injury and surgical repair on radioscapholunate contact mechanics, through surface contact modeling (SCM) and finite element modeling (FEM). The modeling process required geometries, boundary conditions and a contact relationship. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to acquire images of the normal, injured and post-operative wrists, while relaxed and during active grasp loading. Surface and volumetric models were generated from the relaxed images, while kinematic boundary conditions were determined from image registration between the relaxed and loaded images. To improve the automatic image registration process, the effects of initial manual registration on the outcome of final registration accuracy, were investigated. Results showed that kinematic accuracy and subsequent contact mechanics were improved by performing a manual registration to align the image volumes as close as possible, before auto-registration. Looking at the effects of scapholunate ligament injury, results showed that contact forces, contact areas, peak and mean contact pressures significantly increased in the radioscaphoid joint. The locations of contact also shifted with injury. This novel data showed that contact mechanics was altered for the worse after injury. Novel contact mechanics data on the effects of surgical repair were also obtained. Results showed that radiolunate peak and mean contact pressures decreased significantly compared to injured, which indicated the possibility of restoring normal mechanics post surgery. SCM results were compared to FEM results to demonstrate the feasibility of the surface contact modeling approach for clinical applications. Contact parameters compared well between the two techniques. This work demonstrated the potential of MRI-based SCM as a tool to evaluate joint injuries and subsequent treatments, for clinical applications

    Reflexive Space. A Constructionist Model of the Russian Reflexive Marker

    This study examines the structure of the Russian Reflexive Marker ( ся/-сь) and offers a usage-based model building on Construction Grammar and a probabilistic view of linguistic structure. Traditionally, reflexive verbs are accounted for relative to non-reflexive verbs. These accounts assume that linguistic structures emerge as pairs. Furthermore, these accounts assume directionality where the semantics and structure of a reflexive verb can be derived from the non-reflexive verb. However, this directionality does not necessarily hold diachronically. Additionally, the semantics and the patterns associated with a particular reflexive verb are not always shared with the non-reflexive verb. Thus, a model is proposed that can accommodate the traditional pairs as well as for the possible deviations without postulating different systems. A random sample of 2000 instances marked with the Reflexive Marker was extracted from the Russian National Corpus and the sample used in this study contains 819 unique reflexive verbs. This study moves away from the traditional pair account and introduces the concept of Neighbor Verb. A neighbor verb exists for a reflexive verb if they share the same phonological form excluding the Reflexive Marker. It is claimed here that the Reflexive Marker constitutes a system in Russian and the relation between the reflexive and neighbor verbs constitutes a cross-paradigmatic relation. Furthermore, the relation between the reflexive and the neighbor verb is argued to be of symbolic connectivity rather than directionality. Effectively, the relation holding between particular instantiations can vary. The theoretical basis of the present study builds on this assumption. Several new variables are examined in order to systematically model variability of this symbolic connectivity, specifically the degree and strength of connectivity between items. In usage-based models, the lexicon does not constitute an unstructured list of items. Instead, items are assumed to be interconnected in a network. This interconnectedness is defined as Neighborhood in this study. Additionally, each verb carves its own niche within the Neighborhood and this interconnectedness is modeled through rhyme verbs constituting the degree of connectivity of a particular verb in the lexicon. The second component of the degree of connectivity concerns the status of a particular verb relative to its rhyme verbs. The connectivity within the neighborhood of a particular verb varies and this variability is quantified by using the Levenshtein distance. The second property of the lexical network is the strength of connectivity between items. Frequency of use has been one of the primary variables in functional linguistics used to probe this. In addition, a new variable called Constructional Entropy is introduced in this study building on information theory. It is a quantification of the amount of information carried by a particular reflexive verb in one or more argument constructions. The results of the lexical connectivity indicate that the reflexive verbs have statistically greater neighborhood distances than the neighbor verbs. This distributional property can be used to motivate the traditional observation that the reflexive verbs tend to have idiosyncratic properties. A set of argument constructions, generalizations over usage patterns, are proposed for the reflexive verbs in this study. In addition to the variables associated with the lexical connectivity, a number of variables proposed in the literature are explored and used as predictors in the model. The second part of this study introduces the use of a machine learning algorithm called Random Forests. The performance of the model indicates that it is capable, up to a degree, of disambiguating the proposed argument construction types of the Russian Reflexive Marker. Additionally, a global ranking of the predictors used in the model is offered. Finally, most construction grammars assume that argument construction form a network structure. A new method is proposed that establishes generalization over the argument constructions referred to as Linking Construction. In sum, this study explores the structural properties of the Russian Reflexive Marker and a new model is set forth that can accommodate both the traditional pairs and potential deviations from it in a principled manner.Siirretty Doriast

    A virtual hand assessment system for efficient outcome measures of hand rehabilitation

    Previously held under moratorium from 1st December 2016 until 1st December 2021.Hand rehabilitation is an extremely complex and critical process in the medical rehabilitation field. This is mainly due to the high articulation of the hand functionality. Recent research has focused on employing new technologies, such as robotics and system control, in order to improve the precision and efficiency of the standard clinical methods used in hand rehabilitation. However, the designs of these devices were either oriented toward a particular hand injury or heavily dependent on subjective assessment techniques to evaluate the progress. These limitations reduce the efficiency of the hand rehabilitation devices by providing less effective results for restoring the lost functionalities of the dysfunctional hands. In this project, a novel technological solution and efficient hand assessment system is produced that can objectively measure the restoration outcome and, dynamically, evaluate its performance. The proposed system uses a data glove sensorial device to measure the multiple ranges of motion for the hand joints, and a Virtual Reality system to return an illustrative and safe visual assistance environment that can self-adjust with the subject’s performance. The system application implements an original finger performance measurement method for analysing the various hand functionalities. This is achieved by extracting the multiple features of the hand digits’ motions; such as speed, consistency of finger movements and stability during the hold positions. Furthermore, an advanced data glove calibration method was developed and implemented in order to accurately manipulate the virtual hand model and calculate the hand kinematic movements in compliance with the biomechanical structure of the hand. The experimental studies were performed on a controlled group of 10 healthy subjects (25 to 42 years age). The results showed intra-subject reliability between the trials (average of crosscorrelation ρ = 0.7), inter-subject repeatability across the subject’s performance (p > 0.01 for the session with real objects and with few departures in some of the virtual reality sessions). In addition, the finger performance values were found to be very efficient in detecting the multiple elements of the fingers’ performance including the load effect on the forearm. Moreover, the electromyography measurements, in the virtual reality sessions, showed high sensitivity in detecting the tremor effect (the mean power frequency difference on the right Vextensor digitorum muscle is 176 Hz). Also, the finger performance values for the virtual reality sessions have the same average distance as the real life sessions (RSQ =0.07). The system, besides offering an efficient and quantitative evaluation of hand performance, it was proven compatible with different hand rehabilitation techniques where it can outline the primarily affected parts in the hand dysfunction. It also can be easily adjusted to comply with the subject’s specifications and clinical hand assessment procedures to autonomously detect the classification task events and analyse them with high reliability.
