Volume dependence of light hadron masses in full lattice QCD
The aim of the GRAL project is to simulate full QCD with standard Wilson
fermions at light quark masses on small to medium-sized lattices and to obtain
infinite-volume results by extrapolation. In order to establish the functional
form of the volume dependence we study systematically the finite-size effects
in the light hadron spectrum. We give an update on the status of the GRAL
project and show that our simulation data for the light hadron masses depend

Volume constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with a potential energy
We consider volume-constrained minimizers of the fractional perimeter with
the addition of a potential energy in the form of a volume inte- gral. Such
minimizers are solutions of the prescribed fractional curvature problem. We
prove existence and regularity of minimizers under suitable assumptions on the
potential energy, which cover the periodic case. In the small volume regime we
show that minimizers are close to balls, with a quantitative estimate
Reducing the impact of radioactivity on quantum circuits in a deep-underground facility
As quantum coherence times of superconducting circuits have increased from
nanoseconds to hundreds of microseconds, they are currently one of the leading
platforms for quantum information processing. However, coherence needs to
further improve by orders of magnitude to reduce the prohibitive hardware
overhead of current error correction schemes. Reaching this goal hinges on
reducing the density of broken Cooper pairs, so-called quasiparticles. Here, we
show that environmental radioactivity is a significant source of nonequilibrium
quasiparticles. Moreover, ionizing radiation introduces time-correlated
quasiparticle bursts in resonators on the same chip, further complicating
quantum error correction. Operating in a deep-underground lead-shielded
cryostat decreases the quasiparticle burst rate by a factor fifty and reduces
dissipation up to a factor four, showcasing the importance of radiation
abatement in future solid-state quantum hardware
Finite-Size Effects in Lattice QCD with Dynamical Wilson Fermions
As computing resources are limited, choosing the parameters for a full
Lattice QCD simulation always amounts to a compromise between the competing
objectives of a lattice spacing as small, quarks as light, and a volume as
large as possible. Aiming to push unquenched simulations with the Wilson action
towards the computationally expensive regime of small quark masses we address
the question whether one can possibly save computing time by extrapolating
results from small lattices to the infinite volume, prior to the usual chiral
and continuum extrapolations. In the present work the systematic volume
dependence of simulated pion and nucleon masses is investigated and compared
with a long-standing analytic formula by Luescher and with results from Chiral
Perturbation Theory. We analyze data from Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations with
the standard (unimproved) two-flavor Wilson action at two different lattice
spacings of a=0.08fm and 0.13fm. The quark masses considered correspond to
approximately 85 and 50% (at the smaller a) and 36% (at the larger a) of the
strange quark mass. At each quark mass we study at least three different

La cultura de guerra nacionalista en la prensa de "Euzkadi"
Pequeño estudio sobre los distintos componentes de la cultura de guerra del nacionalismo vasco durante la Guerra Civil y el instrumento utilizado para establecerla, la prensa nacionalista. Para ello, son analizados los diarios Eguna, el primero íntegramente en euskera en el País Vasco, y Gudari, enfocado a la información sobre el frente, ambos controlados por el Gobierno Vasco. A su vez, son comparados con Tierra Vasca, el diario perteneciente a ANV, para mostrar las diferencias existentes dentro del propio nacionalismo vasco y su percepción de la guerra
Morphometric analyses and new taxonomic circumscription of South American species of Flourensia (Asteraceae, Heliantheae, Enceliinae)
Flourensia (Asteraceae, Heliantheae, Enceliinae) is an amphitropical genus of resinous subshrubs, shrubs and small trees with 13 North American and 20 South American species among which disagreement on the species limits of some members still exists. To resolve the taxonomy of the South American taxa, we carried out a combination of clustering (Ward's method with Gower distance coefficient) and ordination analyses (Principal Coordinate Analyses) based on 34 vegetative and reproductive characters scored from herbarium material, including types. Based on the results, we recognize 12 South American species: F. angustifolia, F. cajabambensis, F. fiebrigii, F. heterolepis, F. hirtissima, F. macrophylla, F. niederleinii; F. peruviana, F. polycephala, F. thurifera, F. tortuosa and F. suffrutescens. A number of species are placed in synonymy: Flourensia blakeana and F. hirta are synonymized under the name F. fiebrigii; Flourensia campestris, F. leptopoda, F. oolepis and F. riparia are synonymized under F. thurifera; Flourensia macroligulata is synonymized under F. tortuosa, and Flourensia polyclada is synonymized under F. suffrutescens. The First INTEGRAL AGN Catalog
We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed
from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog
includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are
intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5
detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have
been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance
limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is
not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscured to
unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified
models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. Based on
the INTEGRAL data presented here, the Seyfert 2 spectra are slightly harder
(Gamma = 1.95 +- 0.01) than Seyfert 1.5 (Gamma = 2.10 +- 0.02) and Seyfert 1

The spin resonance and high frequency optical properties of the cuprates
We argue that recently observed superconductivity-induced blue shift of the
plasma frequency in is
related to the change in the integrated dynamical structure factor associated
with the development of the spin resonance below . We show that the
magnitude of is consistent with the small integrated
spectral weight of the resonance, and its temperature dependences closely

Energy- and temperature-dependent transport of integral proteins to the inner nuclear membrane via the nuclear pore
Resident integral proteins of the inner nuclear membrane (INM) are synthesized as membrane-integrated proteins on the peripheral endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and are transported to the INM throughout interphase using an unknown trafficking mechanism. To study this transport, we developed a live cell assay that measures the movement of transmembrane reporters from the ER to the INM by rapamycin-mediated trapping at the nuclear lamina. Reporter constructs with small (<30 kD) cytosolic and lumenal domains rapidly accumulated at the INM. However, increasing the size of either domain by 47 kD strongly inhibited movement. Reduced temperature and ATP depletion also inhibited movement, which is characteristic of membrane fusion mechanisms, but pharmacological inhibition of vesicular trafficking had no effect. Because reporter accumulation at the INM was inhibited by antibodies to the nuclear pore membrane protein gp210, our results support a model wherein transport of integral proteins to the INM involves lateral diffusion in the lipid bilayer around the nuclear pore membrane, coupled with active restructuring of the nuclear pore complex
