Network Coding Channel Virtualization Schemes for Satellite Multicast Communications
In this paper, we propose two novel schemes to solve the problem of finding a
quasi-optimal number of coded packets to multicast to a set of independent
wireless receivers suffering different channel conditions. In particular, we
propose two network channel virtualization schemes that allow for representing
the set of intended receivers in a multicast group to be virtualized as one
receiver. Such approach allows for a transmission scheme not only adapted to
per-receiver channel variation over time, but to the network-virtualized
channel representing all receivers in the multicast group. The first scheme
capitalizes on a maximum erasure criterion introduced via the creation of a
virtual worst per receiver per slot reference channel of the network. The
second scheme capitalizes on a maximum completion time criterion by the use of
the worst performing receiver channel as a virtual reference to the network. We
apply such schemes to a GEO satellite scenario. We demonstrate the benefits of
the proposed schemes comparing them to a per-receiver point-to-point adaptive
strategy
Loud and Trendy: Crowdsourcing Impressions of Social Ambiance in Popular Indoor Urban Places
New research cutting across architecture, urban studies, and psychology is
contextualizing the understanding of urban spaces according to the perceptions
of their inhabitants. One fundamental construct that relates place and
experience is ambiance, which is defined as "the mood or feeling associated
with a particular place". We posit that the systematic study of ambiance
dimensions in cities is a new domain for which multimedia research can make
pivotal contributions. We present a study to examine how images collected from
social media can be used for the crowdsourced characterization of indoor
ambiance impressions in popular urban places. We design a crowdsourcing
framework to understand suitability of social images as data source to convey
place ambiance, to examine what type of images are most suitable to describe
ambiance, and to assess how people perceive places socially from the
perspective of ambiance along 13 dimensions. Our study is based on 50,000
Foursquare images collected from 300 popular places across six cities
worldwide. The results show that reliable estimates of ambiance can be obtained
for several of the dimensions. Furthermore, we found that most aggregate
impressions of ambiance are similar across popular places in all studied
cities. We conclude by presenting a multidisciplinary research agenda for
future research in this domain
Energy Efficient Adaptive Network Coding Schemes for Satellite Communications
In this paper, we propose novel energy efficient adaptive network coding and
modulation schemes for time variant channels. We evaluate such schemes under a
realistic channel model for open area environments and Geostationary Earth
Orbit (GEO) satellites. Compared to non-adaptive network coding and adaptive
rate efficient network-coded schemes for time variant channels, we show that
our proposed schemes, through physical layer awareness can be designed to
transmit only if a target quality of service (QoS) is achieved. As a result,
such schemes can provide remarkable energy savings.Comment: Lecture Notes of the Institute for Computer Sciences, Social

State-of-the-art in Power Line Communications: from the Applications to the Medium
In recent decades, power line communication has attracted considerable
attention from the research community and industry, as well as from regulatory

narrowband and broadband systems, covering potential applications, regulatory
and standardization efforts and recent research advancements in channel
characterization, physical layer performance, medium access and higher layer
specifications and evaluations. We also identify areas of current and further

Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges
With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing
number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed
and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected.
Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime
satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency
and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base
stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks
using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services.
Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs.
Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient
maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated
electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS
sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications,
conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be
tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the
demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key
technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage,
and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an
environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to
be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and
atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
Improving the system capacity of broadband services using multiple high-altitude platforms
A method of significantly improving the capacity of high-altitude platform (HAP) communications networks operating in the millimeter-wave bands is presented. It is shown how constellations of HAPs can share a common frequency allocation by exploiting the directionality of the user antenna. The system capacity of such constellations is critically affected by the minimum angular separation of the HAPs and the sidelobe level of the user antenna. For typical antenna beamwidths of approximately 5/spl deg/ an inter-HAP spacing of 4 km is sufficient to deliver optimum performance. The aggregate bandwidth efficiency is evaluated, both theoretically using the Shannon equation, and using practical modulation and coding schemes, for multiple HAP configurations delivering either single or multiple cells. For the user antenna beamwidths used, it is shown that capacity increases are commensurate with the increase in the number of platforms, up to 10 HAPs. For increases beyond this the choice of constellation strategy becomes increasingly important
SGD Frequency-Domain Space-Frequency Semiblind Multiuser Receiver with an Adaptive Optimal Mixing Parameter
A novel stochastic gradient descent frequency-domain (FD) space-frequency (SF) semiblind multiuser receiver with an adaptive optimal mixing parameter is proposed to improve performance of FD semiblind multiuser receivers with a fixed mixing parameters and reduces computational complexity of suboptimal FD semiblind multiuser receivers in SFBC downlink MIMO MC-CDMA systems where various numbers of users exist. The receiver exploits an adaptive mixing parameter to mix information ratio between the training-based mode and the blind-based mode. Analytical results prove that the optimal mixing parameter value relies on power and number of active loaded users existing in the system. Computer simulation results show that when the mixing parameter is adapted closely to the optimal mixing parameter value, the performance of the receiver outperforms existing FD SF adaptive step-size (AS) LMS semiblind based with a fixed mixing parameter and conventional FD SF AS-LMS training-based multiuser receivers in the MSE, SER and signal to interference plus noise ratio in both static and dynamic environments
