    Robust frequency-domain turbo equalization for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications

    This dissertation investigates single carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels for radio frequency (RF) and underwater acoustic (UWA) wireless communications. It consists of five papers, selected from a total of 13 publications. Each paper focuses on a specific technical challenge of the SC-FDE MIMO system. The first paper proposes an improved frequency-domain channel estimation method based on interpolation to track fast time-varying fading channels using a small amount of training symbols in a large data block. The second paper addresses the carrier frequency offset (CFO) problem using a new group-wise phase estimation and compensation algorithm to combat phase distortion caused by CFOs, rather than to explicitly estimate the CFOs. The third paper incorporates layered frequency-domain equalization with the phase correction algorithm to combat the fast phase rotation in coherent communications. In the fourth paper, the frequency-domain equalization combined with the turbo principle and soft successive interference cancelation (SSIC) is proposed to further improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of UWA communications. In the fifth paper, a bandwidth-efficient SC-FDE scheme incorporating decision-directed channel estimation is proposed for UWA MIMO communication systems. The proposed algorithms are tested by extensive computer simulations and real ocean experiment data. In 2018, a total of 1.5 million Sing Health patients’ non-medical personal data were stolen from the health system in Singapore. On the other hand, Cloud service providers cannot be entirely trusted either. Personal data may be exploited in a malicious way such as in the Face book and Cambridge Analytical data scandal which affected 87 million users in 2018. Thus, it becomes increasingly important for end users to efficiently protect their data (texts, images, or videos) independently from Cloud service providers.     Signal processing for future MIMO-OFDM wireless communication systems

    The combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is likely to provide the air-interface solution for future broadband wireless systems. A major challenge for MIMO-OFDM systems is the problem of multi-access interference (MAI) induced by the presence of multiple users transmitting over the same bandwidth. Novel signal processing techniques are therefore required to mitigate MAI and thereby increase link performance. A background review of space-time block codes (STBCs) to lever age diversity gain in MIMO systems is provided together with an introduction to OFDM. The link performance of an OFDM system is also shown to be sensitive to time-variation of the channel. Iterative minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers are therefore proposed to overcome such time-variation. In the context of synchronous uplink transmission, a new two-step hard-decision interference cancellation receiver for STBC MIMO-OFDM is shown to have robust performance and relatively low complexity. Further improvement is obtained through employing error control coding methods and iterative algorithms. A soft output multiuser detector based on MMSE interference suppression and error correction coding at the first stage is shown by frame error rate simulations to provide significant performance improvement over the classical linear scheme. Finally, building on the "turbo principle", a low-complexity iterative interference cancellation and detection scheme is designed to provide a good compromise between the exponential computational complexity of the soft interference cancellation linear MMSE algorithm and the near-capacity performance of a scheme which uses iterative turbo processing for soft interference suppression in combination with multiuser detection.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    CYBER SECURITY MANAGEMENT MODEL FOR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROTECTION

    Purpose – in this article, the authors propose a management model for Critical Infrastructure cybersecurity, further development of a model developed by Limba, Plėta, Agafonov, and Damkus (2017). Research methodology – methodology consists of researching the best practices in cybersecurity management for Critical Infrastructures and evaluating the best element to be included. The article offers an overview of the model, including structure and objectives, and further analysis that focuses on pre-existing CI management frameworks. Findings – main results show that, although previously published protocols and models contain valuable elements, there is still the need to implement a comprehensive model which can be applied to every type of CI. Research limitations – research might have been limited due to the lack of a unitary approach to cybersecurity management for CI, meaning the lack of possibility of reference to a similar model and approach. Practical implications – model which is presented in the article could offer a new approach to CI protection strategies and could be the beginning of a more structured approach towards their protection. Originality/Value – model was created by the authors with references to past published protocols and models, which are present in the quotation in the text as well as the bibliography

    High-dimensional variable selection and time series classification and forecasting with potential change-points

    This thesis studies high-dimensional variable selection and time series with potential changepoints. In Chapter 1 we propose Combined Selection and Uncertainty Visualiser (CSUV), which estimates the set of true covariates in high-dimensional linear regression and visualises selection uncertainties by exploiting the (dis)agreement among different base selectors. Our proposed method selects covariates that get selected the most frequently by the different variable selection methods on subsampled data. The method is generic and can be used with different existing variable selection methods. We demonstrate its variable selection performance using real and simulated data. The variable selection method and its uncertainty illustration tool are publicly available as R package CSUV (https://github.com/christineyuen/ CSUV). The graphical tool is also available online via https://csuv.shinyapps.io/csuv. In Chapter 2 we explore the potential and shortcomings of the “estimation-simulationclassification” approach for time series model identification. Assume there is only one realisation of a time series available and we would like to find the true model specification for a given time series. With the success of deep learning in classification in recent years, we explore the possibility of using classifiers for model identification. The application of classifiers on model identification is not straightforward as classifiers require a sufficient number of observations to train but we only have one time series at hand. One possible solution is to generate pseudo training data that is similar to the observed time series, and use them to fit the classifiers. We call it the “estimation-simulation-classification” (ESC) approach. We find that if the model complexity is not taken into account, more flexible models are favoured by this approach. The advantage of using a good classifier can be discounted by the ignorance of the model complexity, and some simple methods (e.g. information criteria) that take into account the model complexity may outperform classifiers with the ESC approach. Based on our observations on the ESC approach, we propose using BIC and consider ResNet via the ESC approach for time series model identification. The newly proposed methods are implemented in R and will be available online via https://github.com/christineyuen/ESC. In Chapter 3, we propose different procedures to extend the use of Narrowest-Over- Threshold (NOT) to time series with dependent noise, with the objective to provide better forecasting performance. The new method takes into account the potential dependent structure of the noise. We also explore using cross-validation to select the set of changepoints from the NOT solution path. We demonstrate the prediction performance of the proposed procedures using real and simulated data, and compare the performance with some other methods in different settings.     Non-contact measurement machine for freeform optics

    The performance of high-precision optical systems using spherical optics is limited by aberrations. By applying aspherical and freeform optics, the geometrical aberrations can be reduced or eliminated while at the same time also reducing the required number of components, the size and the weight of the system. New manufacturing techniques enable creation of high-precision freeform surfaces. Suitable metrology (high accuracy, universal, non-contact, large measurement volume and short measurement time) is key in the manufacturing and application of these surfaces, but not yet available. In this thesis, the design, realization and testing of a new metrology instrument is described. This measurement machine is capable of universal, noncontact and fast measurement of freeform optics up to Ø500 mm, with an uncertainty of 30 nm (2s). A cylindrical scanning setup with an optical distance probe has been designed. This concept is non-contact, universal and fast. With a probe with 5 mm range, circular tracks on freeform surfaces can be measured rapidly with minimal dynamics. By applying a metrology frame relative to which the position of the probe and the product are measured, most stage errors are eliminated from the metrology loop. Because the probe is oriented perpendicular to the aspherical best-fit of the surface, the sensitivity to tangential errors is reduced. This allows for the metrology system to be 2D. The machine design can be split into three parts: the motion system, the metrology system and: the non-contact probe. The motion system positions the probe relative to the product in 4 degrees of freedom. The product is mounted on an air bearing spindle (??), and the probe is positioned over it in radial (r), vertical (z) and inclination (¿) direction by the R-stage, Z-stage and ¿- axis, respectively. The motion system provides a sub-micrometer repeatable plane of motion to the probe. The Z-stage is hereto aligned to a vertical plane of the granite base using three air bearings, to obtain a parallel bearing stage configuration. To minimize distortions and hysteresis, the stages have separate position and preload frames. Direct drive motors and high resolution optical scales and encoders are used for positioning. Mechanical brakes are applied while measuring a track, to minimize power dissipation and to exclude encoder, amplifier and EMC noise. The motors, brakes and weight compensation are aligned to the centres of gravity of the R and Zstage. Stabilizing controllers have been designed based on frequency response measurements. The metrology system measures the position of the probe relative to the product in the six critical directions in the plane of motion of the probe (the measurement plane). By focussing a vertical and horizontal interferometer onto the ¿-axis rotor, the displacement of the probe is measured relative to the reference mirrors on the upper metrology frame. Due to the reduced sensitivity in tangential direction at the probe tip, the Abbe criterion is still satisfied. Silicon Carbide is the material of choice for the upper metrology frame, due to its excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Mechanical and thermal analysis of this frame shows nanometer-level stabilities under the expected thermal loads. Simulations of the multi-probe method show capabilities of in process separation of the spindle reference edge profile and the spindle error motion with sub-nanometer uncertainty. The non-contact probe measures the distance between the ¿-axis rotor and the surface under test. A dual stage design is applied, which has 5 mm range, nanometer resolution and 5° unidirectional acceptance angle. This enables the R and Z-stage and ¿-axis to be stationary during the measurement of a circular track on a freeform surface. The design consists of a compact integration of the differential confocal method with an interferometer. The focussing objective is positioned by a flexure guidance with a voice coil actuator. A motion controller finds the surface and keeps the objective focused onto it with some tens of nanometers servo error. The electronics and software are designed to safely operate the 5 axes of the machine and to acquire the signals of all measurement channels. The electronics cabinet contains a real-time processor with many in and outputs, control units for all 5 axes, a safety control unit, a probe laser unit and an interferometry interface. The software consists of three main elements: the trajectory planning, the machine control and the data processing. Emphasis has been on the machine control, in order to safely validate the machine performance and perform basic data-processing. The performance of the machine assembly has been tested by stability, single track and full surface measurements. The measurements focus on repeatability, since this is a key condition before achieving low measurement uncertainty by calibration. The measurements are performed on a Ø100 mm optical flat, which was calibrated by NMi VSL to be flat within 7 nm rms. At standstill, the noise level of the metrology loop is 0.9 nm rms over 0.1 s. When measuring a single track at 1 rev/s, 10 revolutions overlap within 10 nm PV. The repeatability of three measurements of the flat, tilted by 13 µm, is 2 nm rms. The flatness measured by the uncalibrated machine matches the NMi data well. Ten measurements of the flat tilted by 1.6 mm repeat to 3.4 nm rms. A new non-contact measurement machine prototype for freeform optics has been developed. The characteristics desired for a high-end, single piece, freeform optics production environment (high accuracy, universal, non-contact, large measurement volume and short measurement time) have been incorporated into one instrument. The validation measurement results exceed the expectations, especially since they are basically raw data. Future calibrations and development of control and dataprocessing software will certainly further improve these results

    Fundamental Limits on Performance for Cooperative Radar-Communications Coexistence

    abstract: Spectral congestion is quickly becoming a problem for the telecommunications sector. In order to alleviate spectral congestion and achieve electromagnetic radio frequency (RF) convergence, communications and radar systems are increasingly encouraged to share bandwidth. In direct opposition to the traditional spectrum sharing approach between radar and communications systems of complete isolation (temporal, spectral or spatial), both systems can be jointly co-designed from the ground up to maximize their joint performance for mutual benefit. In order to properly characterize and understand cooperative spectrum sharing between radar and communications systems, the fundamental limits on performance of a cooperative radar-communications system are investigated. To facilitate this investigation, performance metrics are chosen in this dissertation that allow radar and communications to be compared on the same scale. To that effect, information is chosen as the performance metric and an information theoretic radar performance metric compatible with the communications data rate, the radar estimation rate, is developed. The estimation rate measures the amount of information learned by illuminating a target. With the development of the estimation rate, standard multi-user communications performance bounds are extended with joint radar-communications users to produce bounds on the performance of a joint radar-communications system. System performance for variations of the standard spectrum sharing problem defined in this dissertation are investigated, and inner bounds on performance are extended to account for the effect of continuous radar waveform optimization, multiple radar targets, clutter, phase noise, and radar detection. A detailed interpretation of the estimation rate and a brief discussion on how to use these performance bounds to select an optimal operating point and achieve RF convergence are provided.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201
