Anyons, 't Hooft loops and a Generalized Connection in Three Dimensions
We consider a generalized connection in three dimensions and show that it
emerges in Chern-Simons-Maxwell theories when one studies the disorder
instanton operator. We generalize this construction to non-Abelian theories and
find that the disorder operator (the 't Hooft operator) is equivalent to a
generalized Wilson loop in a representation that depends on the Chern-Simons
term. We speculate about the effective action of the disorder operator and its
applications to the possible phases of the theory in the infra-red. We also
show that fractional statistics can emerge in gauge theories without a
Chern-Simons term if the generalized connection rather than the ordinary
connection is used to couple charged particles.Comment: 17 pages, typos corrected, ref. adde
Pursuing Gravitational S-Duality
Recently a strong-weak coupling duality in non-abelian non-supersymmetric
theories in four dimensions has been found. An analogous procedure is reviewed,
which allows to find the `dual action' to the gauge theory of dynamical gravity
constructed by the MacDowell-Mansouri model plus the superposition of a
term.Comment: Invited paper to appear in the special issue of the `Journal of

Integrable Background Geometries
This work has its origins in an attempt to describe systematically the
integrable geometries and gauge theories in dimensions one to four related to
twistor theory. In each such dimension, there is a nondegenerate integrable
geometric structure, governed by a nonlinear integrable differential equation,
and each solution of this equation determines a background geometry on which,
for any Lie group , an integrable gauge theory is defined. In four
dimensions, the geometry is selfdual conformal geometry and the gauge theory is
selfdual Yang-Mills theory, while the lower-dimensional structures are
nondegenerate (i.e., non-null) reductions of this. Any solution of the gauge
theory on a -dimensional geometry, such that the gauge group acts
transitively on an -manifold, determines a -dimensional
geometry () fibering over the -dimensional geometry with
as a structure group. In the case of an -dimensional group acting
on itself by the regular representation, all -dimensional geometries
with symmetry group are locally obtained in this way. This framework
unifies and extends known results about dimensional reductions of selfdual
conformal geometry and the selfdual Yang-Mills equation, and provides a rich
supply of constructive methods. In one dimension, generalized Nahm equations
provide a uniform description of four pole isomonodromic deformation problems,
and may be related to the Toda and dKP equations via a
hodograph transformation. In two dimensions, the Hitchin
equation is shown to be equivalent to the hyperCR Einstein-Weyl equation, while
the Hitchin equation leads to a Euclidean analogue of
Plebanski's heavenly equations.Comment: for Progress in Twistor Theory, SIGM
Gauge-invariant gluon mass, infrared Abelian dominance and stability of magnetic vacuum
We give an argument for deriving analytically the infrared ``Abelian''
dominance in a gauge invariant way for the Wilson loop average in SU(2)
Yang--Mills theory. In other words, we propose a possible mechanism for
realizing the dynamical Abelian projection in the SU(2) gauge-invariant manner
without breaking color symmetry. This supports validity of the dual
superconductivity picture for quark confinement. We also discuss the stability
of the vacuum with magnetic condensation as a by-product of this result.Comment: 25 pages, 3 figures (4 eps files); version accepted for publication

Instanton String and M-Wave in Multiple M5-Branes System
We consider the non-abelian self-dual two-form theory arXiv:1203.4224 and
find new exact solutions. Our solutions are supported by Yang-Mills
(anti)instantons in 4-dimensions and describe wave moving in null directions.
We argue and provide evidence that these instanton string solutions correspond
to M-wave (MW) on the worldvolume of multiple M5-branes. When dimensionally
reduced on a circle, the MW/M5 system is reduced to the D0/D4 system with the
D0-branes represented by the Yang-Mills instanton of the D4-branes Yang-Mills
gauge theory. We show that this picture is precisely reproduced by the
dimensional reduction of our instanton string solutions.Comment: 12 pages. LaTe
